    Thanks John. This is a truely valuable service you are rendering with these videos. Even if one doesn't actually work on the car it is good to know what needs to be done.

      i know it is pretty randomly asking but does anyone know a good place to stream new movies online?

      @Winston Edison i would suggest flixzone. Just search on google for it =)

    Well explained diagnostics thanks. I will try this on my MGTC. As the ignition light is staying on, and cutout is not closing after a complete rebuild of the car.

    thank you for this inf. my friend Cadillac collector. 1960, 1959, with gen and control box/regulator.
    he removes the battery often to tore the car and save the batt charge. on my last visit it was no charging
    aim just starting to understand the set up on the gen and control box. i will try all of the examples. i would like to see a diagram of a typical set up. i did polarized at the control, (there was a note on the box cover) but there was no spark visible or a faint one that i missed. thank you for informative video.

    why can't you just touch the A & F ON your generator to polarize the generator?

      I don't know if you got my question 39 polarizing the generator

    Good-day....Does this 'polarizing' method work with similar Lucas control boxes? I've been driving my '59 TR3A since 1971 and I'm always looking for easier ways to do things...what do the letters on the control box stand for?...I assume A is armature,F is field,D is dynamo etc.? thanks, John(west coast,Can.)

    I wish some one made video about classic starter/generators or those old metadyne militari generators how they function to tell the truth my s/r magnet type starter motor confuse my some say its used r terminal for by pass voltage to points ignition other say those extra windings are actuali compensating windings so the starter motor can turn suposedli due to baterry voltage and coil potential differences some even claim its some sort of voltage booster circuet so Im preaty much confused at this stage they do resembel the old metadyne generators if brushes are shorted so am I missing some thing here? I did notice my Delco 12si alternator does not hold charge on excite wire so I was wondering is it due to the starter motor if engaged ? Ya know there is no residual magnetism in the alternators rotor left after shuting of vehecel .Also was wondering how to voltage boost the starter motor safly with out frying the baterry ? Long time I have now cold start problems in winter so I figured out perhaps small 2 stroke engine culd run seperate alternator or some sort of hande made rotary converter ya know just to prime engine run some heaters and give some help to my existing startermotor and baterry on cold weather start .Does some one have expiriance with such old devices? Mostli the polariti of coils confuse my I was wondering what wuld happen if you actuali change inductor size and lenght in that s/r selenoid for starter motor?Wuld that mean the starter motor it self wuld work on lowr voltage or gain more torque? Y

    which cable did you remove from the battery to see if the generator is working, negative or positive?

      The car is positive earth, so John removed the terminal off from the + red battery post. Hope this helps

    What I remember years ago the generators on your older cars there was two types of generators in two types of voltage regulators I'm not talk alternators ther was two different types of polarizing procedures depending on the generator you have I was wondering what type of generator these were

    thanx alot , yes real helpful ...I hav a 1957 GMC truck...My gen. has A & F.and 1 ground to the gen. body...And my reg. has batt, arm & fld...with 1 ground to the truck body....Do the same rules all apply...Question is , some say batt. to fld. ...and some say to batt. to arm. ...I'm feelin' real confused....jus puttin' in a new batt ,gen & reg...wiring checks out fine..any advice???.Thanx again ☺☺

      RJDCR I wish they'd answered your question as I have the same question.. I've heard battery to gen to polarize on 12volt delco Remy, on a Briggs engine. Supposed to jump battery to gen to polarize it and you get the spark etc yada yada. Question is, is it the correct way... For something simple seems to be alot of confusion of info.

    Hi can you help. I have a Lucas Regulator and Lucas Dynamo. However I am trying to get it to charge with the Dynamo turning in the opposite direction to what it would normally rotate. My engine runs aniticlockwise looking at pulleys. "its not on a car" I have tried polarising it in both ways and also have disconnected the field winding earth/case wire and have both ends of the field winding isolated from case so I can reverse field winding external. I can get the Dynamo to run as an electric motor in both direction by reversing field wires. But It still wont charge. Both Dynamo and Regulator box are second hand and no History. Cheers from george in the UK

    At 2:39 you sparked between A and F to polarize it, but I think on your system A is the battery. Some systems use A for Armature and Batt for battery.

    • @lukast.9519
      @lukast.9519 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, and Land rover for example names them A and A1. The way of the system working is the same.

      At 4.00 of this video John disconnected from the control box the D and F wires coming from the GENERATOR, and started the engine. He then touched these wires together and there was a lot of sparking. If the engine is running too fast VOLTAGE AND CURRENT WILL RISE RAPIDLY. This can do damage to the GENERATOR. If you are not experienced in this field BE CAREFUL. There is a lot going on electrically and after 50 years of working in this area I am still learning .It's a great interest, but BE CAREFUL. Knowledge comes from experience.

    I have a 1963 ranchero had the generator rebuilt new battery and solenoid and voltage regulator but the battery is still dying and will not recharge

    Does this method of polarizing work when putting in a modern single wire alternator?

  • @garciaj73
    @garciaj73 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    its easy i have a 59 chevy truck and with the key on off just use batt and field on the voltage regulator its the one one the top and the one on the bottom and leave the one in the middle alone just a wire and touch both terminals and sparks like he shows you very easy

    Alternators are AC. Generators are DC. You don't polarize Alternators. Generators need it because the +/- polarity needs to be correct, otherwise you're potentially feeding current backwards to the battery. That's one reason the alternator came about.. No more polarity issues.

    when you say the lead you mean the positive lead?. then you said hot lead . when the engine is running witch one are you disconecting?

    • @hyzercreek
      @hyzercreek 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rex2013 The positive one, if you disconnect it and the generator is not working the engine will stop

    the amount of information being lost that isnt being passed down from generation to generation is sad.
