This is my first reaction video to a Waits song and i'm singing along and enjoying the hell out of this. Tom is one of a kind. It's hard to find the words to express just how much his music means to me.

    • @nelsonx5326
      @nelsonx5326 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think I can express how much his music means to me. I put the cassette of Rain Dogs in my car stereo and it stayed for 3 months at least. That album just kept getting better. I think I finally figured what one of the lines in Big Black Mariah means... "Well he's all boxed up on a red bell day."
In Brooklyn we have an expression for totally drunk, "Nelson man, you're fuckin' boxed. Take a cab." And a red bell day, ever see a bell in a bar on the wall behind the bartender and he or she rings it and the drinks are half price for half an hour, or something else like someone bought the house a drink. A red bell day might mean buy one get two all day. Makes sense now, si? Oh yeah, I think found out what a mariah is, an English paddy-wagon.

And Walking Spanish Down the Hall is going to the electric chair. Check out this passage I copied...
They dim the lights over on Broadway
Even the king has bowed his head
Every face looks right up at Mason
He's walking Spanish down the hall
Broadway is the long hall of cells in the prison's main block. The lights dimming could be the juice is needed for the chair. The King might be the prisoner there the longest, even he respects Mason, who must have had his appeal overturned, because they all know the juice dates. Mason is the guy walking the green mile. Si? Three months straight. Ask me anything. By the way, there is a site that tells ya what Tom Waits lyrics are about but I never visited it. My daughter, who was trapped with me for one of those 3 months when we went to Canada for guitar making school, she told me about the site. She had never listened to him before that road trip. She became a huge fan.

In the UK he was well known for going to a Pub with a piano after his shows to entertain its patrons for free. I was lucky enough to see one of these and I can tell you it was magical. Another talent that was super shy until he performed. So many people said he couldn't sing but there's his name in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. A lesson in you don't have to be a Pop Idol contestant and sing like an Angel to be amazingly successful. RIP Tom Waits....a true entertainer to the people.

Scrolling through the comments, I think it's really sad that so many people have never heard of Mr. Waits. They have been missing out on some spectacular, unique music. He has been my favorite artist for decades and will remain so until the day I die... He has such an enormous collection of great music it's very difficult to choose just one song, but since you were mentioning church music, I would highly recommend "Come on Up to the House". People always say that he's an acquired taste but I was hooked the first time I heard him many many years ago on "The Tom Snyder Show". My favorite video of yours so far. Keep up the great work!

As for Tom Waits songs to react to:
Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) which is also known as Tom Traubert's Blues (Waltzing Matilda)
    Romeo Is Bleeding
    Jockey Full of Bourbon
Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis
Johnsburg, Illinois - this is a very short ballad to his wife.
    Hold On
    Alice
    Invitation To The Blues
Those are the immediate ones that leap to mind. But they are just a glimpse into his music. A really good starting point. I always encourage studio version first to absorb the song then followed up by live versions to see who he moves within the song when on stage.

This was special. One of a kind and brilliant artist. There is just too much to say about Tom Waits and don't know how to start. Heres a few song suggestions, Gods Away on business. Heart attack and vine. Hoist That Rag. Blue Valentines. All the world is green. Jockey full of bourbon. Rain Dogs

Dude, if you want more Tom Waits.
In my opinion his 2 most beautiful songs are "A Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" and "Kentucky Avenue".
They're both in the album "Blue Valentine".

Ya, I dig Tom Waits. Dude, Tom turns 70 in December! Anyway, I enjoy a lot of his songs, but “Dirt In The Ground” really does it for me. Check out the live version from Atlanta.
I read someone say he sounds like an evil Louis Armstrong. 😆

I absolutely love the Atlanta Glitter and Doom performance! Yes! Dirt in the Ground and Lucinda/Down to the Well, Falling Down....Ahh, so great!!
I live not too far away from where Waits lives in northern California, and hope someday to catch him at some place, he sometimes will appear if he likes a performer enough and sit in on a song. He showed up when the Staples played at the Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma about five years ago.

Tom was always a great guest on Letterman. Note: He's been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. He also known for his cool hobo vibe/look. Take a look at Tom's "Chocolate Jesus" live version. th-cam.com/video/1wfamPW3Eaw/w-d-xo.html It includes Tom struttin' on stage (not to mention singing into a megaphone). I also REALLY like Tom's "Chicago" th-cam.com/video/rcA2_g04pMU/w-d-xo.html It includes Augie Meyers (The Sir Douglas Quintet/ Texas Tornadoes) on piano and David Hidalgo (lead singer/guitarist of Los Lobos) as part of the backup band.
