  • How can I become a scientist to discover new drugs for patients? How does the drug discovery team function? How does the pharmaceutical industry work?
As a young scientist, these might be the questions you think about if you are considering a science career in drug discovery and pharmaceutical companies. The most common disciplines in drug discovery include biology, chemistry and disciplines that integrate both, like biochemistry and pharmacology. On top of that, pharmaceutical industry offers long-term career options in various "cross-functional" disciplines, not limited to chemistry and biology. In such a large and complex team, there are many different career options for young scientists.

    4:03 Analytical chemist
    4:47 Molecular biologist
    5:24 Structural biologist
    6:20 Computational biologist
    6:58 Bioanalytical scientist
    7:51 Biochemist
    8:18 Enzymologist
    8:52 Toxicologist
    -About me-
I am a computational chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. I created the Mole Man Chem channel to explain some basic medicinal and biochemistry concepts because I believe the best way to relearn a concept is through teaching.

Hello, I am an Organic Chemistry post-graduate student, and even at this point understanding the drug discovery process can be chaotic. Even though I like Organic Chemistry I am very curious about other disciplines and I would like to get involved in other fields in the future. Your video provides great insights, thank you!

Early day scientifics sometimes consisted of 1 person. A team is best, but its possible with less people. Thanks for this information.

Hello Daniel! I think that your vídeos have a lot of important information about the medicinal chemistry, and in my opinion some channels on TH-cam don't have this type of topics.
    Congratulations! Greetings from Mexico

Hello! Thank you for great video! I am 4th year undergraduate student, and i am choosing between bioinformatics and experimental biology now. Could you please answer do computational biologists/chemists in addition to data analysis, plan experiments and make hypotheses? That is, how much biology/chemistry are there in bioinformatics? Can computational scientist,
for example, suggest some new experimental technology?

Hello. I needed this video, and I'm grateful i came across it. I've always loved organic chemistry from my highschool, and feel it's the most interesting and easiest thing I can do. Currently,I'm persuing a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and was wondering which specialization i should take on in masters. I was doubting whether it is pharmacology or medicinal chemistry i could find passionate about. But now I've made up my mind to aim for medicinal chemistry. Thanks!!

where would chemical biologists fall under or are they the same as medicinal chemists ?

I have a Master of Pharmacy degree and have ambitions to become a drug discovery scientist. I am hoping to do a PhD soon. The subjects we learned in my degree was pretty much Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology and Clinical Pharmacy. I am not sure on which field I should do my PhD in. My research interest is predominantly in topics such as structure activity relationship of molecules, ligand receptor interaction, metabolism, cell signalling pathways and biochemical / cellular / molecular mechanisms of health, disease and hence their drugs. Based on the topics I have mentioned, I feel like my inclination is towards the subject of biochemistry. Let me know what you think? Based on the video, the role which covers my research interests (the ones I mentioned) is that of the biochemist. What would be your opinion on that?

Good questions! My opinion would be, if you might be interested in becoming a biochemist in the drug discovery industry, feel free to look up the biochemist job posts from pharmaceutical company and see if that's what you want to do on a daily basis. Also, you can learn what job requirements are and pursue a research path in your PhD that interests you while helping you learn all those skills as well :)

Sorry for the late reply! Either major can lead you to the pharmaceutical industry but you will likely have different responsibilities. I think it depends on where your passion lies:)
