    By the way: in order to get your unit to TUNE, it first has to see RF power. To properly adjust the FWD and REF power, you should use a calibrated RF / VSWR meter like a Bird Wattmeter. You should start out with about 25 watts from input to output and adjust the Potentiometer until your front panel agrees. If you have a high VSWR as shown on your wattmeter, you can adjust the second pot accordingly. If not, reverse you RF cables and use the same power levels. Once you do that, and the cables are correct for forward power, start bringing the power up and adjust as desired. The ARU needs at least 10-20 watts to autotune.

    just for your info,the wire is called enameled not annealed,annealed copper is what has been softened by heating then quenching as copper age hardens and work hardens!.

    Great video, I am wondering if your issue with the microprocessor is related to the fuse settings which can impact IO functions of the chip even when programmed correctly...

    TNX for a nice video.
    My kit came with a Oled display - a nice one in colors, but very small.
    I would prefer a LED-display - like yours.
    Are there any instructions on how to change the code so a LED-display can work with the ATU ?
    How to connect a Pickit3 to the processorboard ?
    Regards OZ6SX

    Where exactly can I obtain the 18 gauge wire with silicon for the extra strength that goes to the SWR part of the tuner? Thank you!

    Thanks for the video, what is the direction of winding the two smaller toroids. Are they opposite of each other. I have a ATU100 and still cant work out how to wind the binocular transformer. Thanks.

    • @Ferret488
      @Ferret488  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe the direct matters. I might be wrong, but not normally. One end is grounded, the other end goes to the diodes. What makes FWD / REF is the amount of energy going to the antenna vs. the energy coming back. I hope that helps.
      Did you calibrate the fed and ref power using a power meter or VSWR bridge? That's the only way to adjust the pots and know you have accurate readings.

    Thank you for the video. How many turns on the two small transformers of the SWR bridge?

    Thanks for the video George's, that's helpful.
    I got the kit last monday and I have already wired the most of the components on the 2 boards.
    Before winding and soldering the coils, I fed the board to see what would happen.
    The OLED display works very well and shows power, SWR and L/C values.
    The LED connected to the by-pass relay is ON; grounding RB2 has no effect on the relay, I wonder if it is ok ?
    My documentation (single sheet) is not exactly like yours : there is no mention about RB2 / bypass, only button and AUTO (RB1).
    What do think about that ?
    Concerning the tandem match to mesure the direct and reflected powers, I have notices the small pieces of coax which support the toroids are not supplied in the bag, this is not a real problem. By the way, most of the tandem match I saw put one side of the coax shield to ground.
    I wonder if the tandem match works properly despite this connexion ?

      First, the relay K2 is NOT for bypass. K2 is used to insert the Capacitors either in front of the Inductors or after. The Bypass occurs when all of the relays besides K2 are de-energized. The Inductor relays are in series, the capacitors are in parallel. In the normally closed state the are bypassing everything. K2 has no effect on this.

      Check the revision of the software when it starts. If it is 2.7 or 3.2 then both RB1 and RB2 should be functional.

      For the SWR transformers I used #18 AWG Bus wire and put it through the middle of 30 kv wire after I removed the center conductor. The coils pick up the magnetic field as the RF goes through. I don't think having shield and grounding it would work

      Bonjour Gérard. Je suis aussi Gérard F1NNY et j'envisage d'acheter un kit de N7DCC version 1 kW (je construit en ce moment un ampli de e-DX WORLD).
      Peut-on trouver un schéma détaillé (est-ce qu'il est fourni ?). D'autre part, peut-on mettre un afficheur LCD plus grand genre 4X16 ? Merci pour les retours et cordiales 73.

      Bonjour Gerard,
      À vrai dire je n’ai pas mené le montage à son terme car le manque de documentation et le logiciel perfectible ont eu raison de moi...!
      J’ai envisagé de porter l’ATU sous arduino mais je ne l’ai pas encore fait.
      Je connais bien le materiel’DX world, je fabrique moi même pas mal d’amplis.
      Bon courage,

    When I look at the ribbon connectors that goes from the main tuner board to the CPU board yours are installed backwards on the tuner board compared to the picture that comes with the kit (picture terrible). Why are yours backwards (on the tuner board) compared to the picture supplied?

    • @Ferret488
      @Ferret488  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can install them either way, providing that the wire that is in the pin 1 position is the same wire from one side to the other. The board is not keyed so that it prevents you from inserting them either way. As I pointed out, it is best to install one or the other first, insert the ribbon cable and connector, and then follow it over to the other board. This makes sure they are inserted correctly. The diagrams are bad.

    @george Blake I want to ask if a 1kw tuner can be used on a 100 watt radio. I'm just learning about the tuner, can I get it into the microchip, what should it read?

    • @Ferret488
      @Ferret488  ปีที่แล้ว

      It should. The only requirement is that you transmit a minimum of 20 watts. for 100 watts it should work fine.

    hi, george I bought the ATU-1000w, because it is a double-sided board, I ask how to solder the relays on both sides of the board, or it is not necessary, I can solder only on the underside, and the other components. thanks.

    • @gerardf6ehj77
      @gerardf6ehj77 ปีที่แล้ว

      The holes are metalized, so there is no problem to solder only one side.

    • @Ferret488
      @Ferret488  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You only need to solder on the bottom side. If you solder them correctly, the solder will wick up to the top side. The holes are plated through both sides, so conductivity is not a problem

    Hello George, thx for the video. I am also a owner of this tuner, but mine will not tune in a proper way. When it starts tuning the VSWR is higher than before. Any sugesstions what could be wrong ? Which firmware version you are using ? 73 Martin

    • @Ferret488
      @Ferret488  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you running the power in the correct connection? It sounds like you are running the FORWARD power through the REVERSE coil. The INPUT is closest to the corner of the board, the OUTPUT near the center.

    I built this tuner and I am having a problem with it. It works really nice with my FT-DX1200 and I was able to calibrate it pretty well in the range of 5-100W. Now I have tested it with a 1kW HF amplifier and the power shown is clamped at 173W regardless of what the output power is. I cannot decrease the power of the amp below 250W because the minimum power of the transceiver is 5W. What could be the cause? There is not much documentation about this tuner but I was hoping maybe there is a setting I do not know about.

    • @Ferret488
      @Ferret488  ปีที่แล้ว

      You may want to press TUNE and AUTO when you power up. It should say FIDER or FEEDER. See what it is set for. This should be the loss of your coax between the Tuner and the Antenna. It may be set too high. If you have a 1 kw Watt meter you might try re-adjusting it.

      @@Ferret488 Thank you for your answer. I think the problem is that the person who sold me the tuner had the ATU-100 software version loaded into the microcontroller. I checked the EEPROM and indeed at cell 31 I have the value 00 instead of 01 that allows for high power measurement. I will try to change the value in EEPROM and see what happens.

      Loaded 2.7 firmware version from a 1kW Russian tuner and now the tuner works great. I only had to readjust the potentiometers on the board. I will see if I can find a 3.2 firmware version for 1kW. I have tested only for power reading but not tuning.

      @@valentinbolborici9233 This kit actually IS the Russian (Belarus) version. It should have had the software from that version. I suspect that the Manufacturer / Distributor is not able to obtain reliable blank CPU's from MicroChip so they are using stock from other sources, such as other kits that use the same CPU but have other software versions installed. My CPU was DOA and the Seller on Amazon was gracious enough to send me another working board and CPU.
