How to Cast On - Between the Loops for Knitting

- When it comes to knitting, there are many methods to casting on. Casting on means to start a new strand of yarn. This is the very beginning of the project where you have to create the loops on the knitting needle to be the foundation.
In this method, you start off two loops and then all other loops from this point are created by inserting the needle between the loops.
This particular method is a bit tricky to master, personally, it's not one of my favourites but is a doable option for those who like options. I have seen this used on Yarnspirations for certain projects. It may just be a teachers method of preference. Remember with knitting, your own preferences do play a factor on how you start. Unless the pattern asked for a certain style of cast on, of course.

Wowzers! That's how I learned in 3rd grade. I can't believe that's what it was called. My tension was always to tight, so I went to crocheting, lol.
So I just learned another cast on method. That is 4. Thanks Mikey.I learn something new all the time from you.
Thank you ever so much. I am just learning to knit. Hope to see more knitting videos
Thank you for this! I crochet but have been wanting to learn knit. I've looked at a few patterns and I'm excited to learn. Hope to see more knitting tutorials from you.
I've never seen this type of cast on. Thanks for teaching me something new.
Iv always done my cast on this way I was taught to do it by my mum many years ago 😊thank you mikey great instruction 👏🏻Amanda xx💖💕
For people who crochet, the continental knitting is the best way to knitting.
I do crochet and I try to knit for over 10 years the English way. Could not knit that way.
Now I am knitting the continental way and I love it.
Please check out the continental knitting. Thank you for you videos I just love you work.
Thank you for the suggestion. I just couldn't get it myself. I think it's because my mom showed me this way first and it has stuck with me.
Awesome! First time to see this cast on method!
Well, I will try this way of casting on. 😁I have tried others and just didn't get it started 😐 Once again you show and share with us new ways of doing things. Thank you-Linda
I didn't realize there are different cast on methods. I can cast on a different way, and will try this way too, but then what? I can't figure out how to work the rows from needle to needle....my crochet mind just isn't grasping it. Lol Thanks for showing this cast on method, I too look forward to seeing more from you in the knitting department. I really want to learn. Xoxo
So excited! Thank you. YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
This is kind of how I make stitches when I need to add a stitch!! Thanks for this!
I learnt to knit, crochet at age 4.5years old and have done it now well over 60 years. Over the years I have learnt to cast multiple ways depending on what I am going to knit. I knit continental since it is much faster way and also it requires less wrist movements that saves my joints (due to autoimmune disease).
Decades ago, much before TH-cam and internet 😊 I figured out that using crochet hook in my right hand was much faster way to cast off the last row of any piece. The hook allowed easier way to pick up the yarn to complete each stitch, also the tension was easier and faster to maintain using crochet hook.
I do not use between the loops method when casting but it would be easier to pick up the yarn with a hook in this method. Also then there would be no need to lift the hand off from the right needle to curl the yarn over the right needle. If you have not used that method, try it, I think your followers that are new to knitting might find that way easier.
Another tip I have thought to new knitters is to use practically always circular needles. When learning, especially continental knitting, I have seen new knitters have some difficulty in tension going from the knit stitch to the back side purl stitches on stockinette. New knitters often make the purl stitches looser than knit stitches that makes uneven fabric. The easy way is to use interchangeable circular needles by screwing half size smaller needle in one end. Ea, when knitting stitches use 10.5 mm needle end for knit row and 10 mm end for purl rows. It is easy to use also 1/2 mm smaller double point needle on purl rows.
I have been told I should create own TH-cam channel for knit/ crochet instructions and ideas but so far I have just offered my 2 cents worth of advice on knit groups in TH-cam and Facebook etc.😛
And even if I have done all kinds of handicrafts for decades, I still come across some new ways, stitches, ideas.
When I learnt to knit as a child in Scandinavia, no men were knitting. Nowadays men also knit, even Finnish olympic ice-hocky team men were knitting already years ago when preparing for matches, they found it to be relaxing.
Historically old times men actually were knitters, it was skilled work just as making and preparing fishing nets.
This is also called a knitted cast on. It’s an excellent way to add stitches at the end of a row or for button holes.
Thank you for that information. I was wondering what the benefit of this type of cast on might be given that it looks so much more fiddly.
I crochet but I always wanted to know how to knit, is transitioning to knitting easier when you already have that knowledge of crochet?
Is this method better for certain types of projects, I.e. if you want a snug, finished edge versus a more stretchy edge. Thanks Mikey💖
I'm so happy you're putting them on here. I thought I was going to have to go searching through your web site. Thanks for making it easy. I too am new to knitting (just been at it for a couple of years). I've not seen that cast on. What is the benefit of that technique? I'm still trying to figure out when to use particular cast ons. I realize it's mostly preference but sometimes there's a true benefit.
😎thanks 😍✋
I dabble in knitting now and then - nothing serious, just simple things. My biggest pet peeve is the curling. I've never seen this way to cast on. Does it help with reducing the curling? Thanks for sharing!
Are you going to make more knitting video?
I always cast on like this but I twist the loop to put on needle
Which one did you learn to do first knitting or crocheting..??
I learned this 70 years ago
I thought that that is cable cast on?
I actually think Russian style knitting is best for crocheters. @CinnamonStitches recently put out an amazing video all about her struggle and then finding Russian knitting
that's how I prefer to cast on
No knitting for me.
I would like for you to talk to me, sorry about the thumbs down.
