Greetings from South Dakota. It's been nearly a year since I've visited some of the pipester videos on TH-cam. It's like visiting old friends. So glad to see the community is alive and well. Velvet is my go to smoke out of a corncob. Just heavenly when jarred for a few months. I'll have to check Match's live feed.

Hey there, fellow pipers! I just got my hands on a tub of Schermerhorn's Flake Mixture. The reviews on TR are not favorable, but I think this was due to finding tins not properly stored or the tobacco too dry to smoke. Luckily my tub was vacuum sealed. 20 year old blend which was last manufactured by Swisher. I placed the dry mixture in a Ziploc bag with a slice of cinammon raisin bread, checking every few hours. When the leaf was slightly moist I filled a bowl, gave a false light, relight and sipped away on some pipe smoking nostalgia. And brother, let me tell you it was divine. If you ever had Briggs or Sutliff's BRG then that will give you the flavor profile of SFM. Citrusy sweet, a hint of spice, nutiness and a room note that is reminiscent of sweet buttery popcorn. No bite. So the lesson here is if you find your unicorn tin don't throw it out because the tobacco can be revived. Happy smoking everyone.

The boys are back again!! Good to see y'all fellers. I have some 60's velvet that is really good and alot better than the new stuff. It has that opd school pipe smoker smell I remember as a kid. That freezer sounds like a howling cat lol🐈
You guys must be a couple of codgers. 😜 I love old and new... but the flavor and recipe is the same. The burley just got old and the topping more or less took a hike compared to the fresh stuff. It tastes old... just the way some old farts like it!

@@SgtSavinelli I am biased, it's a fact. But another fact, albeit a sad one, is that it is fundamentally impossible to fairly compare older tobaccos at all. Even if you or I bought the very next tin out of the display case next to the old one we open 40 years later, it just isn't possible to recall a flavor so clearly as to compare them honestly. And tobacco that old, no matter how well sealed goes through so many chemical changes that it's totally pointless to draw a comparison between current and 40 year vintage. I've had Velvet from sealed tins from every decade of the 20th century except 1900-1910... and the results didn't vary at all. The topnote (or what was left of it) was distinctly Velvet. The older it gets, the lighter it gets, which allows the musty "ancient burley" taste to really come forward (and that flavor gets heavier and heavier with time), and tins add their own metallic flavor after enough time too. The quality of the burley has varied, from premier to standard, but the biggest change was the use of modern humectants in the 1960s instead of plain water, honey, or molasses. Swedish Match owned Pinkerton in the 60s-90s? and they used modern Humectants in their products exclusively. The best my research came up with on Velvet suggested that in the 30s, most of the pipe tobaccos which became marketed as cigarette tobaccos started using plain sugar water to moisten the leaf for processing, which would dry out faster and leave it more suitable to roll a cigarette with. It was also at this time that most of the same blends started to be offered and advertised as a shag/crimp/strip cut for the cigarette smokers as well. Velvet was originally a crumbled press, like it is today, and when Lane Limited took over production in 2014, it restored the original cut style. The Pinkerton stuff you've got there has modern humectants, so no honey or molasses, and it was considered the low point in the blend for long-term Velvet guys because they seemed to find it "less sweet" than it used to be, because the older stuff would have had sugar water added during aging (that's where the maple sugar portion of the classic flavor came in- part of Velvet's secret process). So... the short version is, you're right. They're not the same blend. No info on the Spaulding and Merrick original, but Liggett used liquid maple sugar and real licorice, The Pinkerton stuff had humectant and was topped with a small amount of maple flavoring and licorice flavor, and the current stuff restored the original pre-cig cut and once again uses real maple sugar and licorice, with a smaller amount of humectant. But it's all still Velvet. And I love it. 😎
Wouldn't it be cool to be able to step into a time machine and slide way back into the 1920s or so and pass ourselves off as Old Codgers of the time period and smoke up all their tobacco!!! LOL!!

You guys are right about the taste being different. JimInks has had all of the different Velvet offerings over the years and said they’ve changed a lot. He said Sir Walter Raleigh has been the most consistent older blend.
Tom Howard pipes are vintage 1940's, probably Algerian briar so that ought to be a sweet smoker for Sarge., Howard apparently was a well known comedian and radio personality in New Jersey and his hobby was making pipes. Pipedia has a good article on him.

Sarge- last year I was offering matches some soviet pipe tobacco from the 1970s but he declined and he told me to ask you if you wanted to try it. I smoked some already and all can say is that it has its own unique taste I can't describe.

A couple weeks ago I bought an old pipe stand with a built in humidifier from an antique store in my town. 32 bucks and it holds 6 pipes, pretty cool but expensive for me!! What really sold me?! There is a sandwich bag of someone’s old Urlsy stashed in the humidifier!!!! I don’t know what it is or how old?! I’ll make a video! I need some advice! Haha!
That's hot stuff!! You don't see that kind of a find too often. It's probably really dry, so you might want to re-hydrate it before you try and smoke it. Put it in a jar with a Boveda humidity pack for about a week or two.

A couple weeks ago I bought an old pipe stand with a built in humidifier from an antique store in my town.
32 bucks and it holds 6 pipes, pretty cool but expensive for me!! What really sold me?! There is a sandwich bag of someone’s old Urlsy stashed in the humidifier!!!! I don’t know what it is or how old?! I’ll make a video! I need some advice! Haha!
That's hot stuff!! You don't see that kind of a find too often. It's probably really dry, so you might want to re-hydrate it before you try and smoke it. Put it in a jar with a Boveda humidity pack for about a week or two.
