It's truly amazing and no-one can question Slats ability at Pipe, his affinity he has with the wave AND his uncanny ability to jag a few at Backdoor. But, there's a Jedi named John John who is the man out there nowadays & has been raising the level of fearlessness and ability with his approach to surfing Backdoor.

I have a vhs of the pipe masters somewhere from probably early 90s where Derek Ho was lost in a barrel that was a millisecond from closing and blasted out! Best pipe barrel I can remember. My buddy and I watched that contests over and over for years on vhs
For sure. There was a VHS called the Mondo extreme experiment - video made in the 90’s that had some really good pipe masters footage featuring Tommy Carrol, Slater, Ross Clark Jones, Jeff Booth, etc.. Some of the best barrels and late take offs at pipe you’ll see. Tom Carrol was killing it and I think he might have won it that year. Derek Ho was/is the man. Wish I could see that wave you’re talking about.

I surfed with Ronnie Burns more times than I can remember. "Free surfing" ????... he was the best I ever saw at Pipe.
JBG was the best I saw at Backdoor..... But.... I saw Laird make a barrel like this one of Ke11y's at Backdoor. Back then it was 95% cameras. Now it's 99% videos. All cameras had given up on Laird and he popped out at the very end. It was the craziest barrel I saw in 4 years of living there Aug '87- Jul '91....
@@franram7426 Whaaaaaat Ron Burns and Johnny Boy (bad boy club) were insane! Laird def has had his fair share of insane barrels at pipe. I remember I was 16 years old out in the lineup at V land with Sunny Garcia, Larry Rios was out there, Dane Kealoha, and Cheyenne Horan was out too (hardly got any waves that sesh) It was during the same winter Titus snapped his leg at the bay. I say this because little did I know back then I was surfing with a bunch of future legends. Small world. Good times! 🤙

ive never been inside of a barrel before. is it difficult to stay balanced on the board when you go into a barrel?
In most barrels yes, you gotta deal with the ceiling falling and the trap door where the bottom opens up, oh and don’t forget the foam ball from behind…so basically it’s trying to swallow you whole. Kelly had to maneuver his way out of that thing for sure

It's difficult to stay committed at first. Practice surfing across closeouts till they don't scare you any more. It will happen naturally then.

pretty good but the best tube i have ever seen was Jerry Lopez at pipeline 1973 absolutley stunned every one on the beach,we couldnt believe how big and narley that tube was!Kelly Slater is a incredible surfer but man it just aint like the good ole daze when i was there!It was just so natural and free to watch at the pipeline,you know it wasnt all hype and tv and touristy bullshit it was just another day!
There is no way guys like Lopez are riding barrels like guys now. Lopez timed a bottom turn, stalled then came out. Now guys are getting barreled right away instead of doing a bottom turn and playing with the barrel on the foam ball.
I am 65 years old, Lopez was Mr Pipeline in my youth but even Lopez would say barrel riding has significantly progressed since his era. You are biased, looking at the past though rose colored glasses.
