How To Varnish Acrylic Pouring with Minwax Polycrylic

  • How to Varnish your Acrylic Pouring canvases. In this demo I show you my preferred method of sealing my acrylic pours.
    Find material list below.
    The first thing I do when I prepare for varnishing is clean the surface of my canvas which has been drying 2-3 weeks. This step removes any silicone and dust on the surface.
    I touch up the sides of my canvas. This step can be done at any time during the 2-3 weeks of drying time. I usually forget and put it off until I’m ready to seal my paintings.
    I apply 3-4 coats of Minwax Polycrylic Clear Gloss.
    amzn.to/2v3LYCs
    I apply the Minwax Polycrylic Clear Gloss with a painter’s trim pad.
    amzn.to/2v3wZJ3
    I start with the trim pads damp. Important! Rinse application pads with water after each coat. If you forget to clean them they will dry, become hard and be unusable.
    If any silicone or anything else remains on the surface of the painting that is resisting the Minwax Polycrylic, I will use a gloved hand to rub the Minwax Polycrylic into the surface of the painting. This is usually enough to get the Minwax Polycrylic to adhere to the surface.
    I allow each layer of Minwax Polycrylic to dry 2 hours before applying the next coat.
    Find pictures of my finished pieces on Facebook.

I also use sample pots of domestic acrylic paint tinted to the colours chosen from swatches and mix these colours to achieve different hues. The only other thing I use is WD 40 silicone spray in the mix and similar varnish to above in the same way.

    Really great information. Love that you can rub it in that way! I procrastinate finishing paintings and I am terrified about leaving streaks. I had about decided on grumbacher spray finish because of my poor varnishing skills. You can do this with your hands and not have streaks?? I am ALL IN on that! Thanks!

    Hi, question. I have an acrylic painting that I worked forever and a day on. I want to apply the same minwax you have in the video. It's my first time glossing a painting, I really don't want to mess this one up as it took me so long to finish it! I don't mind minor streaks from a paintbrush but are there any other things I should watch out for when glossing considering acrylic paints, the brushes, the type of canvas? I just want to give it a simple shine but I don't want to go into it blindly and mess it up and it turn out foggy or lumpy or dull and you seem like you know exactly what you are doing! :) thanks!

      Half the time I forget to clean the surface. Rubbing the minwax across the surface with your hands works in whatever silicone is left. It's just as easy to do that.

    Bubbles in Polycrylic can is my issue. After watching your video I learned to NOT shake the can, but to stir it. Well, I love these lessons in art as I go along (I think). Is there a way to remove those fun bubbles that I have now created? They are definitely on my canvas, which is not a big deal. These two first acrylic pours are turning out to be my "test" pieces. I still love them!

    I varnished 4 paintings last night with Polycrylic. Two of them were from early Jan, so I assumed they were fully cured. One was perfectly smooth and had no imperfections. This morning they are all cracked. I had wiped them down with alcohol, to removed any oils, and am wondering if that caused them to crack? Wondering if my coat was too thick. I am afraid to use this product now. :(

    Have you ever had trouble with air bubbles? I recently had an experience where I did what I thought was going to be the last coat on about for paintings, only to come back to them about two hours later to have the entire surface literally covered with hundreds of little air bubbles that weren't visible when I had finished applying the Minwax. I ended up having to sandpaper them down and start all over again but it was quite the ordeal to get them back to the smooth surface.

    • @NickyJBurch
      @NickyJBurch  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neecy Mirva I could see it being an issue if the can was shaken. The first time I tried the Minwax I used a mini sponge roller, because I kept seeing sponges recommend. Nothing but bubbles, but luckily I didn't let them dry.
      I can't imagine what would cause bubbles to form after it had already been applied though.

    • @neecymirva8710
      @neecymirva8710 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicky James Burch yeah I didn't shake it at all because I knew that was a no-no. And I'd varnished like probably 30 paintings out of that same can previously. I was using a brush. Which I always used. So I can't figure it out. The only thing I was wondering might've had an impact is it was extremely extremely extremely hot that day. I did have my little air conditioner running but I don't know I just can't figure it out. Never had it happen before and so far hasn't happened again. So if anybody has any ideas let me know.

    I tried your recipe of pouring medium - glue all + floetrol. My paintings looked good when they were wet - bright and shiny. But after they dried up, they were little disappointing because all the luster was lost, probably because the paint was absorbed by the canvas. I used Golden and Artist's loft colors. Is it because I used too much of torch ? or this is usual? Will Minwax bring back its gloss like it was wet?

    Sorry if this is a repeat question but: does this method on acrylic paint on most canvas styles?

      I've not had any issues. Perhaps, if only one coat is applied, but I always do at least 3.

    Thank you for the insight of fixing the problem. Would not have gotten in there like you did with your hands. I think it's great that you threw all these tedious and tiresome youtube videos (how to apply varnish) out the window. I got a good laugh out of it. Love your paintings.

      Finger prints. And your hands have natural oils. And it would be less effective because our skin would soak it up. And most importantly, it has a warning on there that says the vapor is harmful to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.

      I would imagine so as this person does uses gloves to help rub it in and get the sides. I personally use a paint brush
