Hello Krammer just so u know I came across ur TH-cam channel last week over the holidays and o binged watch ur videos and it has inspired me to get back into building bows it's been years since I've made one and I made the tillering gizmo told my wife it's a tool I didn't know about or that I need to have one I just don't know how to post it on here lol
I'm sure there is an equation but you will essentially protrude more as you bend the bow more. What you have to watch for is even curve everywhere in the bow. That's it.

I am ALWAYS amazed by all your works, specially by your bows. Also, since I became an archer, the thing that I wanted to do the most was creating my own japanese Yumi bow. I would be very grateful if someday in the future you would make a vid about crafting one. If you read this, thank you so much for your appreciation.
Another thing; I have holes drilled in my tillering tree starting at 12" progressing to 28". When I am making a gizmo check, I put a peg in the hole, lock the string in and make a quick swipe of both limbs with the adjusted gizmo. I start at the 12" peg on the long string which is a low brace for the bow. I use a1/2" dowel for a peg, anything smaller might break when you get to a higher poundage check.

Just a tip to make life easier, when you're trying to find the centrepoint on a quadrilateral, just draw straight lines from one corner to it's opposing corner, ie. top left to bottom right. Repeat for the other corners and the point where they cross will be your centre. No fiddling with any other tools :)
Great to see your video but you have it a little off, First a golf pencil works the best and doesn't interfere with the string, next you want to blunt the pencil point so it won't wear down while you are marking with it, and third; you run the gizmo up the limb (weaker limb) with the pencil retracted, when you find the weakest spot(widest gap) you adjust the pencil point in to about 1/8" from the limb at to start with( a course setting), use this setting on both bow limbs so they will match. Don't readjust the pencil until you increase the draw length of your bow. When you get all the stiff spots out of the limbs and the pencil doesn't mark anymore you can go to the short string. As you get to the final tiller on your bow you can reduce the gap to 1/16" for extra fine tuning of your limbs. You will haev to eyeball the fade out section to get some limb movement, as the gizmo runs up the fade it quits marking. If you go over to the Primitive Archer website and look in the "how to section" I have a detailed tutorial on how to make and use the gizmo, the instructions for its use are on page 3. You can PM me over there if you have any questions. I had a complete how to video on how to make and use the gizmo on TH-cam, for some reason they said I violated some policy(impossible) and they canceled my channel.

Man I need that tillering video! There really doesn't seem to be much on that subject on TH-cam. Following your $15 longbow build, I ended up learning the hard way that the legs need to taper significantly in thickness. I began with 13mm thickness all the way down to the tips... currently got it tapered such that I'm at 13mm at the fade outs and about 9.5mm at the tips and I still have nearly zero flex in the last 12in of each leg. I'm trying fervently to not end up with a 6ft bow that an 8yr old can draw so it's going crazy slow.
I love how he ignores completely any reference to the blasting audio in every comment across all videos lol. It's an amazing channel, but I find myself playing with the volume up and down in almost every video.
Hi Kramer, if you try and leave the tips of the limbs thin across ways and deep like in a traditional bow you will get a faster bow, I have seen this done and it really works, similar tips to moglabet limb tips, narrow but deep, as an experiment can you try it and do a video if how it works, you can get really narrow limb tips and so get a faster limb, kind regards Peter, UK Barebow archer :)

How far should pencil tip protrude out? Am I right in thinking: Find deepest bend, and set pencil height to that? This would make it uniformed along rest of curve. Would I adjust pencil using same method throughout tillering process?
I love the idea it's really simple, but ingenious. I have an idea if you want to make a recurve ipe bow. You can try adding on like siyahs or kerfing the recurve ends of the bow. If you want to add siyahs just get a piece of wood steam it for like 45-60 minutes. Then bend it in a form. You than take it to your bow cut out a v to splice the siyah to the limb glue it together than you are good. You could take like silk thread to cover up the joint if you want.
@@kramerammonsarchery no problem if you want to try kerfing you just take the bow cut a slot in half the thickness of the limbs depending on how long you want your recurves. Sand the kerf slightly to accommodate for the glue so it doesn't squeeze out when it's in the clamp. Take a wooden shim the same thickness as the blade you are using. Try putting it in the microwave wrapped with a wet towel this is to make it flexible. Get some epoxy put it on both sides of the shim. Put the shim in the joint then put your bow on the form. Start to clamp it from where the kerf starts outwards to the tip.
contact cement is best glue for cloth and skin backing it has elasticity and is water proof try it . bow length has a lot to do with longevity of wood bows
Here, they're not his words verbatim, but they should suffice; Tillering Gizmo Materials required: - Wood block (6" x 1.5" x 1.5") - 5/16" nut - Pencil Steps: - Mark centre of block with a line and 3/4" on either side of centre line (referred to as A and B). - Draw lines to connect the offset lines (A and B) to the corners on the OPPOSITE face of the block (the side of the block should now display a trapezium shape) - Cut along the lines going from A and B to their respective corners. - Sand the block smooth to prevent splinters. - Find the centre point on the SMALLER face of your wood block. Mark it off. - Drill a hole with a 1/2" bit, just deep enough for your nut from earlier to fit ALL the way in. - Drill with 5/16" bit and drill through the centre of the hole you have just made. This hole must go right through the block. - Sand your block to clean any blowouts/splintering. - Hammer the 5/16" nut into the larger hole carefully. Make sure it goes in flat and not skewed. Hammer the nut in until it sits flush with the face of the wood. - (OPTIONAL) If you want to add a finish to the wood, do it now. You can use beeswax/carnauba wax, tru-oil/teak oil, whatever you have at hand or prefer. - Sharpen your pencil. Clamp the rear end in the vice. -Thread the gizmo onto the pencil until the very tip peeks through the hole. - Done.

I was thinking that as well, drill the smaller hole bottom up then the larger recess for the nut top down to remove any tear out.

Razor knife, the usual way to sharpen a carpenter Pencil
Buy a belt sander
Block of wood. Drill a hole same diameter as pencil. Insert the pen.
chuck it into a mill or drill press, spin it up, then hold a sanding block at just the right angle? ;P
Sandpaper. A file. Razor blade (ANY blade really). Hell of a lot of options tbh.

If you drill the smaller hole first, it acts as a pilot hole for the wider hole.
Rather than a hex-nut, try a t-nut or a thread insert.

Do I have to have the angles cut? Don’t have a band saw.
Do you not have a scroll saw or hacksaw at all? They should work in place.

You could have used a threaded insert close to the outside diameter of the pencil, would have been easier to build.
