Definitely ultra lightweight!!! The shock cord configuration probably makes it easier to convert to a hanging light (like a lantern) in your tent than a traditional headlamp or hand held flashlight. I could see that ‘1 lumen’ setting being useful in that format.
For sure, Peter! This is a setup that I plan on using for summer hiking- when there are plenty of daylight hours and my need for night-time illumination is minimal. Definitely not the approach I would use for winter camping or an evening trail run, but this kind of customization is one of the great aspects of making your own gear. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks, Jabbar! I used this on a trip last weekend and was really please with its performance. Stacked up very well next to my regular headlamp. For what it’s worth, I liked it better clipped to the brim of my hat than on the side of my head. Thanks again for watching!
Compared to ~$50 for most Black Diamond and Petzl models, this idea totally wins in the ‘budget’ category. I mean really, $50 for a flashlight!?!?!?! I can get a lot of spam and ramen for that $.
This is one of the MYOG pieces I have stuck with. The light has performed incredibly well and attaching it to a baseball cap is 100% functional... plus I love not having to worry about batteries. Please let me know exactly how much Spam and Ramen you could get for fitty buck~
Hi all- I have been using this set up for the last couple of months and I wanted to report back that I almost always use the bobby pin on the hat approach instead of the band around the head. I find that I like having the light in front of my face as opposed to on the side of my head and since I am almost always wearing a ball cap, it seems like the best solution. Stay safe and let me know if this hack has worked for you!
