But the consequences of cancelling a day's operations is passengers scattered to the four corners of the planet. The worst breakdown was in baggage handling and screening, and we know passengers reached their destinations without their luggage. Firstly, they have to locate the passengers, then find their bags and get them there. That means the first flight with spare cargo space. Secondly, some will be on the move - a cruise ship, for example. The chaos visible was an open invitation for theft, as well. What about bags lost their tags? Claims may need to be matched. I don't know if you've ever had a bag go astray, I have, it took three days to surface and five to arrive.
