- Ahoy legends! This week is my 100K Subs Special episode!! It took 3 trips to hook this fish and I landed it!! This is a continuation on from my previous mackerel fishing adventures in pursuit of a giant over 20kg. I'd been unlucky on other trips, but I got him this time!!

That’s a bloody ripper. I was reading an old fish mag and apparently back in the 1970s they caught them almost this big off Yeppoon. They would have been the days I reckon.

ex pro mack fisho here,, the status and bragging rights of gettng a big spanish is great ,, my biggest was 56 kg,, but an old pro fisho from Yeppoon, where i grew up, taught me,, always release the fish over 15 to 20kg ,, their our breeding stock for the years to come,, and the time it takes to get a bigger fish in, you could have 3 smaller 10kg in the boat,, plus smaller ones are better eating,, it shows these ol sea dogs were into fishing industry conservation way before the government even thought about it,,,,,, congrats on 100k subs Sammy
couldn't be truer mate, there's some great advice to be received from the old fellas. Hopefully the macks' (and every other fish's) stocks stay up, we just gotta trust that everyone does their part by releasing anything they don't need for their immediate needs. but anyways tight lines mate 👍👍

Solid mackerel Sam and congrats on the 100k subs. You've earned every one and deserve a lot more. I was fortunate enough to land a 25.9kg specimen a few years back from the cliffs in Shark Bay. Amazing experience. One thing that we do when on a remote trip (to help with the 20kg fillets limit) is leave 10mm of meat on each side of the frame when filleting. (Frames aren't counted as part of our bag limits in WA) Then I chop up the frame to fillet size pieces which are gold on the barbie. Just one idea to speed up the process a little and enjoy that awesome meat in the frame a bit more. Love the channel and here's to the next 10 years. 🍻

Sammy nice fish mate, when they get that big(like anything 15kg and over) I find them way easier to clean by hanging them from the tail. Meat comes off better,you don't need to bend your back and try lift the fillet to see what you are doing. Give it a try if you havent yet. Also I tend to think the sharks leave the big ones and don't attack them as much as smaller mackies, big problem in WA with sharks but lots of drag and chase em with the boat when hooked up!!
