My favourite Jeanette MacDonald musical by a landslide. Allan Jones was too gorgeous for words. Studio politics and Nelson Eddy's insecurity over an ascending rival blocked what could have been a fabulous film career. At least Jones came away from the film with what became his signature tune in a successful singing career - The Donkey Serenade.
The original operetta was set in Bermuda, but the movie version was moved to Spain during the Napoleonic Wars, presumably because the Spanish Civil War was in the news! With Alan Jones in the Nelson Eddy role. (In A NIGHT AT THE OPERA and A DAY AT THE RACES he had the Zeppo Marx role!)

Allan Jones was a huge improvement over Nelson Eddy. Too bad he didn't get good films after this one.

My only issue is that its too long. Jeanette MacDonald requested Allan Jones. Too bad he was billed below the title.
