PROBLEMS ALREADY! How To Replace Septic Distribution Box.

- Along with purchasing this property, we acquired all the problems that came with it. The septic system is a very important part of a functioning home. So I got the tank pumped and looked over the system. There are two issues... the distribution box is deteriorating and the leach field is seeping up due to hydraulic pressure. It may just need some healthy bacteria introduced to clean up the drain bed. Hopefully this video will help you with any septic issues you might be having.

I’m a septic inspector. It could be leeching up in the yard because that finger was getting all the water. Like you said, they weren’t all getting the water. So that one finger could be over saturated. Close of that one finger for a month or two. Let it dry out. Then rotate the cap back so it accepts water

That D Box looks really deep. We install septic systems in Kentucky and our D box’s have to be kept shallow for the lateral lines to work properly. Maybe a difference between Kentucky and Indiana. Great video

If your effluent is seeping to the surface it means your leach bed is not accepting the water. It's either saturated because the soil cannot accept the water anymore (its past its life span or it was put in a bad spot to begin with) or you've had solids make their way to the field clogging the holes in the leach pipes and/or the passages in the gravel trenches. You will ultimately have to abandon that line and add another at some point in time. I would suggest removing anything from going into your septic that doesn't absolutely need to go in there (water softener discharge, laundry, etc...). A grey water system is a good idea, or find a hill and pipe your grey water to it.

I put a lid on our tank 2 years ago. Now it only cost $100.00 to get it pumped. I just got to find the distribution box. Looks like rain all weekend, maybe next week.

I have never done a job like this. Nice Job you made it look easy. But I have a question, should you have reversed the orange hole plugs? Install the large size inside the box so there would be no chance to have them pop off the box due to excess pressure.
Thats what i thought too, but the larger flange was on the outside. They seemed flimsy for being buried.

Its the gases that deteriorate the tank... You can vent the system but then you are smelling it as well... Whats your tank look like?? Mine is mint from the water level down above the water level where the gases are the tank is rotted away.. Im due.. Today i replaced the first d box in the system, What a mess but its done!
I watched your video to prepare to replace my own crumbling d-box, which I completed last weekend. However when I was finished, sweaty and gross, my wife failed to bring me a cold beer. Trying to understand where I went wrong?

My septic system recently did not pass inspection. But what I'm not keen on is that the company that did the inspection, i.e. for certifying the septic system in the context of a home sale, owns and operates a company that does septic installations. He gave me a quote for a new leech field (but said the tank is very likely salvageable) and so I'm considering it. Meanwhile, I've researched septic systems for the first time, including watching this very insightful video -- thank you -- and have been wondering, what if the problem is just the distribution box? Seems like that could be the source of the system failure and be a much less expensive fix. Would appreciate any comments.
Very well could be the problem. Once the solids get to the leach field its pretty much game over. If you just started seeing an issues it may have only made it to the dist box. Good luck with the repair

That is actually a Baffle Box, bigger than a Distribution Box… i should’ve used a machine like you i pulled one by hand and replaced with a new concrete one. Trying to get it level was a nightmare.
My baffle is in the septic tank. This just distributes the liquids to the leach field. Ya it wasnt a fun job
@@SpicerDesignsLLC Yes you have an inlet and outlet baffle in your tank but The bigger style distribution boxes such as the one you have is called a Baffle Box.
How did it end up working? Was it distribution box or leach field?
The one finger is still a little wet. Wet spring doesnt help either. The box had to be replaced regardless. I still have more work to do but its getting better.
Watching you run your finger along the probe thinking is that shit? Thankfully it turned out to be a ground probe and not a tank probe😂

I’m a licensed installer and operation and maintenance firm. You shouldn’t add bacteria to the septic system. It is highly corrosive to concrete. Human waste has plenty of bacteria no more is needed and only causes damage to concrete tank and concrete D box.
I'd like to know a professionals thoughts about this: should you occasionally add any if your household uses a lot of antibacterial soap? Just a recent thought I've had.
I recently bought my house and assume the water softener salt had deteriorated my D-box.
In the state septic classes they teach there is never any reason to add chemicals sold as septic treatments. Human waste has high levels of bacteria so no more bacteria is needed and additives will only cause damage to the concrete.

Its definitely gotten better. Ive ran some treatment through the system too to break up and clean the leach field too.

My leech field has the same issue as you described, sloped with less topsoil where it seeps through (at the end/lowest point of branches).
I dug up and found my d-box has started failing.
My system didn't have speed levelers like yours did, but I just got some and hopefully they will help until I can replace it in the spring.
I was waiting for that mud to splash you when you got in there to pry with that pick axe…. What a crappy job!
Could a bad distribution box cause water backing up in the house?
Not usually. Have you had your tank pumped? A full tank will do it or a failing leach field. Is your yard all wet where the leach field is?

Do all conventional systems have a d box? I have a 1973 home with original gravity system.
It should have a distribution box. I know on older septic systems they used to use clay tile and cast installed of pvc.
@Spicer Designs oh okay. I gotta find mine cuz my tank is running high on water. I'm praying it's a d box problem or with the line between the tank and d box and NOT the drain field
@@TheBalognaPony it is normal for the liquid to be toward the top of the tank. The tank will fill with the liquids and every-time you flush or send water in, it will push that same amount out to the leach field. But if your having issues in the house thats a problem. And by no means am i an expert, im just sharing what ive learned. Hope thats helps and you can get it resolved.
I mightve missed it but how old was the d box?
House was built in 05.
@@SpicerDesignsLLC -- ok thanks. Mine was built in 1990 so I'm thinking it's probably time to replace it. I have a lot of seepage.
@@Everclearish if you dig it up and its falling apart then yes. The seepage can be a lot of things. May need to try running some treatment through for a wile and see if that helps. The leach field may be clogged up.

@@Everclearish i actually checked the dist box last night. Its full of water which means the field isnt draining. Looks like ill be digging up the leach field and replacing it. What a pain.

Meant to thumbs up but there's only a thumbs down sorry watching have a job to move tank switch with alarm some areas ive seen were very similar I think the ground had to much rain and couldn't drain but our problem is the water goes down hill back to septic and alarm for pump goes o ff he has to push switch in basement he wants to move it up he's afraid he may fall down the stairs at night he's getting close to 80 so next week I will move switch to top of steps

I never said they were new. I just made one.
Leach field is bad, needs replacement.
Leach field isnt that old. I put some treatment in it and regraded that area. It hasnt leaked since and no issues with the plumbing. I check the new distribution box periodically and it all looks good.
