Can you see the difference between Ike Shorunmu and Francis Uzoho? I always rewatch old matches with close to the same excitement I had. The feeling of belief back then was incredible.
Nostalgia can be deceitful. Those old keepers had their failings. Uzoho is not in the best of form mentally at this time, but he was a decent keeper at the 2018 world Cup.
It was Benni's first retirement 😂. But we still made the semi finals ans won the 3rd place playoff game against Tunisia without him. We had great depth back then.
Coach Trott was crazy enough to use use the 3-5-2 formation in this game knowing full well Nigeria had dangerous wingers like Finidi George and Babangida who were backed up by full backs like Babayaro and that raypist Godwin Okpara . Trott should have just used 3-4-3 formation and place Nomvethe to the left and Bartlett in the middle and then perhaps play Lekolea on the right in a forward 3 . Atleast it would have neutralised Okpara and Babayaro and prevented them from going forward thus leaving Babangida and George isolated against Fortune and Mkhalele.

Benni retired after fighting with SAFA . But Bafana still managed to make it to 3rd place finish at this tournament . Which wasnt that bad. But atleat back then we had depth. We still had nomvethe ,ndlanya , Glen Salmon ,George Koumantarakis , Bartlett to call up .
This was in 2000 not in 2002 where Nigeria lost to Cameron in the final in 2002 we were knocked out by Mali who were the host in the 1/8 finals with players Ibrahim Bakayoko, Basala Toure, Seydiu Keita, Dramane Coulibaly and Boubacar Diarra.
