When I started playing Magic during Invasion/ 7th edition never would have dreamed that I would be managing my collection like a stock portfolio. Balancing my revered list collection with modern, trying to stay ahead of what will be banned and not banned. Tying to speculate on what RL card might have value if certain cards are created, etc. Love the game but love collecting just as much. Appreciate the channel and what you do Mox. Happy holidays everyone!
I sold my mana crypts before the ban, didn’t play jeweled lotus and had a butt ton of one rings. Them nuking the value of people’s collections is gonna make people walk away from long term collecting.
I just turned in a big ol' grip of cards to my LGS. Some were $30-$40 cards that I had multiples of, but had been sitting in the binder for years. Hopeful to flip it all into a dual land, but if not, the store credit now will save me some reprint grief.
Digital marketing does not necessarily mean pushing Digital platforms. Typically this just means more advertising through social platforms for their existing products. Or possibly a shift from traditional marketing to digital marketing.
Good video. I’ve slowly working my way out of play sets for a while now and just focusing on cards I need for my commander decks. The unbanning of Opal got me interested in Modern again, but not at the current price. When your collection is spread out to only a few of each card, the value of your collection sort of stays in neutral. I had 1x mana crypt, 1x jeweled lotus, 2x dockside, 1x opal, and 3x of Green Sun’s Zenith. You look at the price fluctuations in that and it basically all balanced out. I also had 11 Faithless Looting. Those are all gone now, traded them in for store credit. It wasn’t a spec; I just ended up with a bunch of them naturally over the years. Same thing happened with Pyretic Ritual earlier this year. I always cash in for value when a common or uncommon spikes. One reprint can crater those.
My wish for Christmas is less direct sets to anything other than type 2. It doesn't warp formats (other than standard, an already shifting format game) and lets modern, Legacy, pioneer and commander have opportunity to reflect and analyze sets properly. The amount of new cards we got this year was truly inundating.
Boomstick 💥 Most of the newer stuff i just keep one or a play set depending. If i like the set, i collect the set in the ultra pro binder for that set, but RL is were i set my money higher end usally. Reprints are a little crazy but i am not telling anyone anything they dont already know 😊
I already prepared I have checked out working on pairing down my edh decks no new ones any time soon; pivoted more towards legacy so only a few singles needed and some more dual lands. I have 100% checked out of draft and pre-release with the new UB announcements.
I started playing during Revised. While I've held onto my priciest/Reserved List cards, I've slowly been whittling my collection down and using the cards I let go of to fund my cardboard/crack addiction.
I don't know they print a lot of commander. Can't play it on arena. If the Community pushes modern, pioneer, maybe even Canadian Higlander, it'll bouy everybodies collections. We can influence this with more participation in organized play and not just the direct buying and selling
feels like power level is going through the roof. A card like dark confident is a good example, bob seemed untouchable but is now below 10$ i think. why damage yourself when you can just play psychic frog. Goyf sees way more play and is still cheap. mana bases thankfully took a hit I guess. cards like sheoldred are destined for reprints and or just getting crept out. playable RL is still a good investment and the bracket system might shake things up
The community WILL be divided into 2 groups: 1. "Real" mtg players that "ban" all power creep sets, SL, UB and whatever crap is coming in the next years as well some sets in the recent years that fulfil thise criteria. 2. New players who dont care
I'm under the thought that wotc will reprint every single card of value through marvel and final fantasy and the value of everyon'es collection will be cut in half and never come back
In 2024 I skipped 5 sets and I will skip Innistrad Remastered and Aetherdrift in 2025. I MAY buy Pre-cons and Prerelease Kits and some singles. I am concerned about the flood of reprints these past 2 years which drives the value of MOST cards into the ground. This is good for the players who could not afford these cards however, since there is not much value, Wizards should not be charging these high box prices and cutting back on packs, cards, and odds of getting a good rare or mythic. I buy cards from the Reserved List for my Commander decks. Sorry Wizards, I have cut back 80% on buying cases of sealed boxes. I have saved thousands of dollars. Shop Smart, Shop As Smart. Thank you for the video Mox Man. Ramble Jamble. I am looking forward to Final Fantasy. I have access from three different sources to get products pretty cheap. I pick and choose what I want to get. Those prime high end cards like Jeweled Lotus etc... I only owned 1copy. I did not own any Dockside Extortionists either. I picked up 2 for $13.00 each and a Jeweled Lotus for $30.00.
@@MTGMOXMAN lol i remember going to the flea market when i was 8 to get my last 2 copies of pranacious deed and saw spirit monger for the first time i was like oh man i didnt know it existed 🤣 i had literally just started playing competitive magic and at the time monder was called extended and i was playing the early variant of what rock is today. kids my age didn't know what hit them at the lunch table 🤣 they didn't have a clue i was spending wed and Friday nights play testing against chris pikula and John finkle at star city games and even they doubted spirit monger back then but i took it to a jr super super league tourney and made it to top 16 out of 84 players . later on i found out that a kid made the card from winning some kind of similar tournament.... just a cool nostalgia moment if we got back the monger!!!
I’m a player, collector and investor. 50% of what I buy are cards and packs to play, I don’t care if their price goes up or down, I have them to play. 25% of what I buy are graded and/or reserve list cards to collect, I do care if the price goes up or down but more as a novelty. 25% of what I buy are sealed product as an investment, I really care if the price goes up or down and I track it to verify if my investments were good or bad.
Guessing which cards to sell over which ones to keep is a fool's errand, you're doing nothing but guessing. Cards are rarely outmoded by directly better cards, more often it's a card that shifts a strategy that pushes a card out of use. There is no way to predict that. Reprints are a little easier to guess at, BUT WotC has realized their recent printing mistakes so that's less reliable, especially with Special Guests and serialized reprints, which add chase to a set without adding a significant amount to the market. If you have 50+ of a card you should always be evaluating when to sell, nothing about 2025 changes any of that.
Funny you mentioned Jeweled Lotus... 2025 will be the year of its unban, qne with the current all-time minimum, it's a great card to put some money on.
I have already started to list my collection for sell, simply because the universe beyond should remain special like master set with universe beyond reskin or modern horizon with universe beyond showcase, the lore has become boring without a big pick moment, the commander bores me and the other formats are almost dead in my area
I hope none of you have a closet stuffed with mtg boxes etc. You've been had by TH-camrs etc. Fooling you into thinking you can profit! Don't waste your hard earned cash.
WOTC reprinting will make business ppl walk away. On a players perspective, it is awesome, and I just hope they reprint everything like there is no tomorrow. Hope to see Rhystic Study for 5 usd. The hoarders and business ppl ruin the game bigtime. Reprinting will bring sealed products to reasonable prices once again, giving back “common people” the joy of cracking boosters. If you think about it, the whole shift in direction from WOTC (many questionable, I agree), is in order to bring new public to it. Considering the overall mindset of new gen, desconstructing the image of an “elitist” game must be central to it.

Buying back into playsets is almost always more expensive than any rise in value of what you bought by selling them.
Sold my physical cards about abit more than a year ago and replaced them all with 25 cent proxies.
