  • How to turn an awkward space into a secret bookcase door leading to the hidden safe room. I used this hidden door to divide a finished living room from a safe room using a 600 pound magnetic locking mechanism. The door can be opened using one of the 2 remotes provided or from the inside by pressing the emergency exit button.

      So if my door is gonna open out instead of in I should order the outswing magnetic lock? The link you posted is an outswing but your door swings in? Or am I just thinking of it backwards?

    • @SatisfyDIY
      @SatisfyDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing that changes is how the strike is mounted to a bracket on the inswing. I used the outswing and made my own bracket because I wasn’t sure if the supplied one would work.
      Hope that helps.

    Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves th-cam.com/users/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

    Great job on the door. I've been researching hidden bookcase doors this past year. Also it's great your room is deep enough in the event of a home invasion you have a safe place.

    That's real clean. I won't hate on the lock, but that's not how I'd do it. I'd probably hide a mortise deadbolt in the cabinet below. You could also do an electronic receiver that fails secure, with a key to let you enter (and a thumb-turn to shut yourself inside). Either way, I'd probably use a few rare earth magnets (or one Precision PLS24PRO-XHD) so that the bookcase doesn't open itself if you lose power.

    I’m considering doing one of these but I’m worried about the hinges holding up once I load them with books or a kid climbs on the shelves. How did the hinges hold up once you added some weight to the door?

    • @SatisfyDIY
      @SatisfyDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haven’t had any issues. I did add a roller to the opposite corner for extra support though.

    • @dangarcia6709

      you let your kid act like that?

  • @ST3ADYxKICKS
    @ST3ADYxKICKS ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know what the weight rating for the hinges you used was? Trying to figure out a cheapish way to do this for a 48inch opening with a single door and not spending $2500 on hinges

    • @SatisfyDIY
      @SatisfyDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would buy commercial door hinges that are fairly inexpensive and use casters to support most of the weight. Probably the cheapest way!

    I am trying to devise a cool unlocking mechanism.
    Basically what I want is this:
    One of the books on the shelf, when pushed in, causes the door to unlock.
    And it automatically locks when you close it again
    Ideas?

    • @SatisfyDIY

      There are a couple videos on TH-cam of people using latches similar to a gate. You could give that a shot.

    Please tell how long it took you to make the secret door, then I’ll multiply the the hours by 10 or 15 for me to make it. 😖
    Seriously is there a set of plans available?

    • @SatisfyDIY
      @SatisfyDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly there are no plans, it was more of a build a bookshelf to fit the hole and attach it to a door.
