      Not me lol. I’ve had a pack myself, usually after going out for sunday lunch growing up at cracker barrel 😂

      @GlobalAdventurer ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not me. I used to eat them all the time after I pretended to smoke. I personally don't think they're a problem. It's like long time ago when all the kids had guns with snaps with gun powder and went around the neighborhood shooting your friends. That didn't cause everybody to later buy a firearm and shoot people. It was just fun. I used to eat all the candies you guys displayed and back in the day we would drink the flavored sugar water out of those wax bottles then chew up the bottles until the flavor was gone and spit it out! 😁And HOT TAMELES was my favorite candy and still is👍

    Although I liked buying them as a kid in the 90's, Xochitl is really heartwarming that she cares about children not being influenced badly by candy. ❤

    So Xóchitl really hates that her son smokes, huh?😅
    When I was a kid, they were chalky sticks, not gum, so no powdery "smoke"

    I was born in 1960 and I remember candy cigarettes. I didn't like them, but I do remember them. Smoking was so accepted back then! You'd see tall ashtrays full of sand in grocery stores and departments stores. They were even in doctor's office waiting rooms! Of course you could smoke in any restaurant (there wasn't a separate smoking section either). You could smoke in any part of a plane. You could smoke in movie theaters. The teacher's lounge at school was filled with cigarette smoke. It was just starting to change when I was a kid (thanks to the Surgeon General's Report on Smoking), but it took a long time to become socially unacceptable.

    I ate all of these in the 80's. Along with the actual candy cigarettes too. Everyone I knew still smoked in the 80's so it was cool to mimic the adults, but fun to eat the candy.

  • @jossynda

    Most of these were still going strong in the 90s too, other than the cigarettes. We had "chalk sticks" that were kinda similar, but not marketed like cigarettes. We did have bubblegum cigars, though.

    First of all, in the '50s, most parents probably smoked. Doctors & movie stars advertised cigarettes. I bought both the bubble-gum cigarettes and the hard candy cigarettes, but have never smoked a cigarette in my life. Secondly the wax bottles were meant to be chewed with the liquid to flavor the wax. Why would the Moms think people would need to tell the kids not to eat the wax? Do they eat gum? Maybe kids were smarter in the 1950s.

We used to place the candy in your friends mouth, like the priest at mass on Sunday lol. My brother must have really liked that candy, because he ended up attending the seminary for 9 years, and now he is a catholic priest. I play music at his parish. I sing in Spanish , Portuguese , English and Latin. I use your podcast to practice Spanish, which I used to teach, but now is rusty. Muchas gracias. I’ll pray for you, and you pray for me

    When I was a kid we used to take them outside in the winter time because when you breathe out in the cold air it looks like smoke so we used to pretend it was cigarette smoking. Pretty dumb, but we were kids. For the record I've never been a smoker so guess it didn't ingrain itself on my psyche at least.
