  • The Rideau Centre is a significant landmark in Ottawa with a rich history. Officially opened on March 16, 1983, it is located on Rideau Street and is bordered by the ByWard Market, the Rideau Canal, the Mackenzie King Bridge, and Nicholas Street in Downtown Ottawa.
During its construction from 1981 to 1982, the development of the Rideau Centre faced considerable controversy. The construction required the demolition of a whole block of stores south of Hudson’s Bay Company’s “The Bay” on Rideau Street, which was met with opposition from local residents and business owners. Additionally, there was concern that vehicle traffic would increase substantially upon its completion.
One of the partners in the development, the Eaton’s department store chain, faced intense local opposition when it attempted to rename the mall the “Rideau Eaton Centre” during construction. Due to the backlash, Eaton’s eventually backed down from this plan.
The Rideau Centre has undergone significant changes since its opening. On September 26, 2013, Cadillac Fairview began a major expansion and renovation of the 30-year-old shopping centre. This redevelopment project expanded the Rideau Centre by 230,000 square feet and included a new 35,000-square-foot dining hall with 16 eating establishments and seating for 850 people. The project also saw the addition of large retailers like Nordstrom and Simons, and the total cost of the redevelopment was projected at CA$ 360 million.
Today, the Rideau Centre is the largest shopping mall in the National Capital Region and the sixth largest mall, by area, in Canada. It houses approximately 180 retailers and is connected to a rooftop park, a Westin Hotel, the Shaw Centre, the Freiman Mall, and the Major-General George R Pearkes Building. It attracts over 20 million visitors annually.
