  • This is simple and short video about how to clean and reinstall your oil oil cooler/oil pressure check valve on a 12 valve Cummins. This another maintenance point that is often forgotten and overlooked but CAN cause critical engine failure. (Its not likely, but it can once the engine is over 300,000 miles).
    As always, I hope you enjoy!

    Does the underside where the oil filter mounts not need plugging? Serious question-is there like a check valve on that one?

      I got mine from Power Driven Diesel. At the time I think it was around $240
      It was a perfect fit, I was quite happy with it.

      @getheated in your opinion would it be wise to order a new housing to have on hand with my mileage being 514000km just in case there is ware on the current one on the truck but will not know until removed??

    • @getheated

      @@bigbluefj with those valves wearing away against unprotected aluminum I would er on the side of caution and have one onehand. That is unless your truck can sit for a week or two and wait for one to arrive should you discover you need one. Given your mileage, however, and the likelihood that yours is original, its a pretty safe bet to assume it needs to be replaced.

    I have tiny oil bubbles coming into my coolant while truck is running but not when it’s off. Has zero blowby, runs perfectly fine and oil dipstick looks normal, would this be an oil cooler issue?

    • @getheated
      @getheated  ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically speaking if it’s only happening while running, and you aren’t getting any water in the oil, it will be caused by the compression in the cylinders. I’d be leaning more toward head gasket as the main culprit or possibly a crack in the head/cylinder wall. That being said it’s a lot easier to at least check the oil cooler and if that’s not it, and you plan to reseal everything anyway once you find the problem… you aren’t out any extra money. If that is it… saved you looking anywhere else.
      If you are certain it’s engine oil, there is a test most shops can run to verify if it’s accompanied by hydrocarbons (aka from engine combustion). If you have an automatic am the fluid has a red tinge to it, it’s possible the trans oil cooler inside the radiator ruptured. Let me know what you find out!

      the oil will make its way to the cooling system when running when the oil cooler is faulty. oil psi approx 50 cooling system psi approx 16psi the oil overcomes the cooling system just changed out oil cooler that swelled and cracked..easy fix compared to head gasket.less than 100 bucks .

    Where did the vavle assembly on the outer cover come from and the turbo fitting

    • @getheated
      @getheated  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The oil fitting for the turbo I recycled off the oil plate. The seal kit from cummins came with an assortment of o-rings so i just cleaned it up and put a new seal on it. The rest of the internals are still cummins parts bit i got them in a kit from Pure Diesel Power. Here is the link.

    Would this solve a low oil pressure issue?

    • @getheated
      @getheated  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late reply! Apparently I had notifications turned off. On the 12 valve Cummins the most likely culprit to low oil pressure is the sending unit or the wires from it being all caked up and nasty. Is it possible the oil being clogged could read a lower pressure? Yes. The oil passes through the cooler before reaching it's lubrication destinations and the pressure sensor. Mine was about half clogged and did read a tad low. I did also have to replace my sensor (sending unit" and it's pigtail that was damaged from the fuel preheated meltdown.

    Hello, I would like to ask how to diagnose an actively bypassing relief valve. I have a high oil pressure in the main oil rifle @85psi. Range is 10-50psi as per Cummins

    • @getheated
      @getheated  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late reply. I need to get more info here. Are you saying your dash gauge is reading 85 psi?

    • @mcpel262
      @mcpel262 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@getheated Yes. The gauge is actually connected to the main oil rifle or oil gallery.

    • @getheated
      @getheated  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s really odd to read higher than normal pressure but my first suspect would be the wiring/connector itself. Make sure it’s clean and has a good connection. No frayed wires etc. next would be the sending unit itself. If you have a ohm setting on a voltmeter disconnect the wiring and measure the resistance between the contacts on the sending unit. If you don’t have a known good one often times a parts store will let you repeat this procedure on one in the store. If not I believe I have one on the shelf here I can check too.
      If both of those check out there is the possibility your gauge on the dash is off or there is an obstruction in your oil feed after the sending unit causing pressure to be too high. The order I have listed potential problems are the order they are most likely to happen. Sending unit/wiring, gauge, internal engine. Hope this helps!

    • @getheated
      @getheated  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In addition if you know there actually is an obstruction inside the oil system the first suspect is always a clogged oil filter. If that isn’t it, it becomes more of a hunt honestly. Let me check my literature and get back to you. I suspect something but want to confirm before I put my foot in my mouth. Lol

    • @getheated
      @getheated  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I would check all the above. Then if still having an issue get a mechanical gauge plumbed in to the system and get a reading. If still 85 then you may want to remove the oil filter housing and inspect for damage/obstruction/ stuck oil relief valve etc. my spring had stuck open on mine if I remember correctly.
