I love videos like this. It’s like I’m just hanging out at a campsite listening to your words of wisdom. Cheers and have a damn good day to you and Nick!
As someone who has lost around 65lbs in the past two years and does photography (more of a hobbyist than full time like you guys), the secret was just putting in the time and effort. However, it was just little bits here and there and making small, incremental changes to my habits. This has led me to better health. Think about what changes you could make from here on out and could hold to, and go for it. Something as simple as walking for 30 minutes a day, changing that breakfast McGriddle for a banana and some peanut butter, over the course of months, will have a dramatic impact. By the way, love your stuff! Keep it up!
Fun chat, older than both of you.. Have dropped 5 stone over the last 2 years mostly driven by a desire to get to the tops of mountains comfortably so i can shoot... Just booked a hiking trip through the heart of Iceland 6 days wild camping. That sort of trip is motivation to keep it off and keep the cardio up...
Great chat with Nick. I love these because it's more casual than a regular interview, just 2 buddies hanging out over beer and coffee. I think showing the reality of landscape photography is good, that ideal light is rare, and most if the time, the conditions won't be great. Usually on photography trips, I don't have time to eat, and end up losing weight. You're not hiking enough if you're gaining weight :)
I know I'm late to this video but 6:30 Pro hiking tip: You do not need to pour oatmeal into a bowl. You can pour hot/boiling water in the paper packages they come in and it will cook in there without leaking. Learned this on a 10 day hike through Michigan and it saved me tons of frustration in the mornings. No longer needing to scrape a bowl clean every morning, just had to boil water!
Nick gets some epic storm shots! I'm not a "Mountain House" outdoorsman myself. Kraft makes meals-ready-to-eat less expensive, better for you, and you can place the bag in hot water to warm them up. I totally understand about not being able to purchase things that fit. I'm 6' 5" tall, weigh 400 lbs, and have a size 15EEEE foot.I can't even get a pack that fits. Great conversation!
wohh pleasure watching you both at ease and chatting issues that concern most of us... it is not so difficult to change eating habits once we decide that "getting fitter and healthier" compliments your passion.
Love this candid campsite discussion :) You both are great! And also I appreciate seeing failure shoots, because it's a reminder to us all to keep going back and to keep trying again and again - the perfect shot doesn't always happen the first time out or in spite of all your planning.
The thing that relates with me the most is very well discuss in this video... As a landscape photographer we are trying to reduce every ounce in our backpack but not our bodies.. recently I have started tweak only one thing is just to be mindful of what you order when you are traveling. How many times you have chosen a full bowl of salad over a burger and fresh cut fries? So eat the healthiest from the given options. You will be surprised how many healthy options you could have at McDonald's. Just this with combination of reducing number of times to eat and avoid snaking has helped me reduce about 8lbs I last 2-3 months. Slow progress but still a progress.
And coming up next time on fototripper. "Large Landscape photographers in search of healthy foods and a traveling Lipo -Suction van." classic video Gavin. Its cool to hear the good and bad of a traveling Landscape photographer. You should consider doing more of them with different photographers and subjects.
Really like when you throw some of these videos into the mix, just a sit down and chat. Think we forget just how hard it is for you guys to travel around (UK we can make the length of the country in 10 hrs if you avoid the M6) and still make content for you tube! It looks like you are getting more popular as the arse hats have come out the woodwork to make themselves feel better by trolling the good guys! must be a sign your doing things right mate. Both you and Nick are some of the best genuine creators on here. I leave you with a saying " It's not the size of the nail that counts but the weight of the hammer knocking it in!"
We don't like to watch you guys fail for shits and giggles, it's actually one of the best ways to learn from a more skilled practitioner! When a session goes great you don't usually go over all the reasons why, but when the day is shite you usually hash out all the issues you ran into. Keep it up! Cheers.
Gavin / Nick - funniest video I have watched in a good while. The natural rapport between you guys is evident to see. A pedal operated camera - 1000 calorie burn before you can fire your shutter would see some rapid weight loss....
So cool you guys were visiting the Bend area! I live in Bend and it would have been awesome to have met you guys. I follow you both (and Thomas) every week. Your Smith Rock video really inspired me to get out and spend more time in that area taking photos. Keep up the great work and hope you enjoyed the Deschutes Fresh Squeezed brews you were drinking. One of my favs!
My smart watch tracks the steps ive taken over time. For some strange reason it thinks im walking while watching this video and shoving popcorn down my piehole, its telling me to keep it up and im doing great. Now Im not one to argue with smart tech so I put another bag of Mr Redenbacher's finest into the nuker, should be at the 260 lb mark by nights end. Gotta say I love this channel as well as Nicks and Adams and Thomas and the list goes on, I realize sometimes you guys all get into a bit of a slump and the pressure is on to get a video out. No matter what or how " dull " the content may seem Im gonna still be with you all watching away while doing what my smart watch tells me to do. Next video im going to try shoveling potato chips into my yap as quick as I can and see if the watch thinks im running a marathon. Keep up the great work Gavin and stay safe out there.
A nice little change of pace, well done. So, I worked for the company that makes Mountain House (Oregon Freeze Dry, in Albany Oregon) for about 5 years and have eaten so much of that stuff then and since when backpacking that I just cant stomach it anymore. I will say that the chili-mac is one of the better flavors though. Also, Nick wants storms in Oregon? I can get you to some excellent spots for storms not to far from where he lives. It just requires 3 or so days of backpacking, so let's get the Phat Photogs program rolling (no pun intended) and get you guys up to the Wallowas.
Great video and a struggle I share. Focus on being happy and healthy NOT thin. No food is bad food. I follow the idea that there is Health at Every Size. Thin does not equal health. Doing things that makes you physically and mentally happy will allow you to do what you want and the weight loss: if any, will be a by-product of those choices. Something is better than nothing, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Finding an activity that you enjoy while raising your heart rate is key. We are lucky to have already found that activity. Guilt and Social expectations are the heaviest things I carry. See ya at the top of the hill!!
19:15 Nick, you are right. Oversized landscape photographers or mountaineers must have assorted equipment like everybody. I bought a Lowepro 650AW not to bring all equipment but because all other backpacks looked ridiculous in my back.
So this is what goes on between the golden hours or when the light is not there 🤔 - call it forward planning for entrepreneurs 🙈🤪. My problem is not weight, but age - I worry more about falling off mountains and injuring myself. Perhaps we need a first aid series as well as a healthy eating one 🤔. You guys so crack me up. 👍👍
Yeah Gavin I hear you with the eating healthy. When I am traveling in my car, bouncing between campsites with my mountain bike in the UK. I can be away for a long time, i eat really poorly. I beg the wife to cook me really good healthy grub! My brother is the same in his camper, chasing waves for surf for two weeks and on the bike. He struggles with the food. I can really relate.
I love that coffee filter, use it every time I go backpacking. If you like the Mac and Cheese you got to try the biscuits and gravy, its the bomb ! I'm fighting the gaining weight thing just from the fact that all the time I used to hike on the weekends I'm now filling with photoshoots where I don't need to hike. I do remember one of the professional photographers at "Out of Moab" last year lamenting about all the weight he had gained as he got busier in photography and he was pretty fit before ,...so the struggle is real : D
3 years late to the party, but a super-fan of both you gentle folk! I’m a fatter landscape guy AND hardened hiker (eg, pick up those bags with the center top strap! not the shoulders!).
Always start the day with a full English boys, bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding and fried bread, you know it makes sense. Well maybe not but it tastes bloody great. Great video keep it up mate
Here in Florida I know that in the spring my best luck will be at one place, but that place will be crap in the summer.. so I have a different places I go to for the summer. I rotate between going up to 3 hours (weekends) one way in different directions to about 20 different parks to get different types of pictures depending on the time of year. Sadly, I still have a day job during the week. I also alternate between landscape and wildlife due to the lack of places for landscapes when you live where everything is flat. Keeps it interesting for me. I am a phat photographer.. send me the food list
Yeah I definitely mostly pack protein shakes and protein bars to take with me on shoots haha - packing for sustenance and not flavor, although the shakes and bars I have are not too bad flavor-wise
Hate to worry you guys I am 52 and my landscape photography came to a sudden halt last year after a stroke and heart attack, I am a little overweight well small compared to an elephant -and still find it hard to stay healthy. It's all street and stock photography now for me until things improve but you guys I think are fitter than I was as I got tired just looking at some your hikes --great video Guys like all of them.
Honestly, the answer is simple. You invite me on your trips; I plan and prepare the meals. I'll cook for up to 4, plus me. I'm a really good cook and organized in the kitchen/campsite/cabin. In return I get to learn better photog skills from you guys, and you get fed good meals.
Love you guys whether you find good conditions or not. ....... You should try infrared for the summer. Don't know about the meals but just swap out some of the chocolate bars for apples, dried fruit or fruit and nuts....not ALL the chocolate bars, being a chocoholic myself! Dieting is OK until you get hungry.....then it sucks!
“Fat photographers. A dying breed. Literally” - laughed so hard I sprayed the cake right out of my mouth. A few years ago I bought really expensive hiking gear, that was “a neat fit” because I was about to start losing weight. It looks great in my cupboard, and I now wear budget fleeces, made for fat lads.
Hey guys, great chat, love both of your guy’s work. 💪👏. If you two do decide to do the challenge I’m down. I’m not a TH-camr/Vlogger but I am a photographer needing to shed some weight so I can carry more gear, lol. Keep on keeping on! #dothework #goanddo #liveyourpassion
It's hard to put myself in you-two you-tubers position as "heavy" men. I'm 5'-10", and at last weigh-in for my doctors check-up, I tipped the scales at a whopping 120 lbs. Not that I am complaining about only having to move that little weight around all day. But the dark side of my story is this... I'm 70 years old, not many health problems, except I don't eat enough to ever make any noticeable weight gain last longer than a few days. I burn fat like a BBQ-pit; unfortunately I burn up all my stored energy in the same process. Meaning I'm tire easily, and must push myself to get things going. So, the moral to this story is we all have weight problems of some sort. You two are terrific at what you do, so just keep doing it... the way you are. Sincerely, DMC
Seriously guys, I saw a few comments scrolling through, Low Carb/no sugar. I eat the burger, egg mcmuffin but without the bun. I eat wings, steaks, beef jerky. You just have to stay away from chips, breads, reg. soda, etc. After a week or so it starts to get easier to follow along. And yes, I do cheat a little along the way, but not very much. I'm lazy, once I get home from work I sit and watch ya'lls damn TH-cam channels. lol. Really, almost zero exercise. I'm like a bear in winter. I'm 49yrs. old and was 211 lbs. Made the decision that I wasn't turning 50 and being over 200lbs. Started in December and I'm now 190lbs. My goal is 180lbs. My 50th. is one week away. You can do it!! Best life change I've ever made.
Ok Gavin (and Nick), this one was very good an love the just general talking that for most people is just listening into a chat among friends. On the subject, had my interest from the get go for so much of it was dead on for myself right down to discussing Mountain House meals, oh I recommend you check out some from the Good to Go as well as Backpackers Pantry brands. I particular like the Backpacker Pantry Cincinnati Chili. Hell you even got what seems to be ever landscaper-wildlife photographers must have in the Jet Boil (first thing the morning for the coffee). You touched on so many other things that hit home directly for me including Gavin insane driving times at time. I myself average around 400 miles driving on a typical weekend just going out to take photo (good, Bad, or wasted). Not being a waif myself and being even older than Uncle Grumpy, I am sorry to say, that the pounds or kilos hang much different now than 30 years ago, not really much heavier, just the figure as mover around (you know what used to be my chest is fell down to the waist and what used to me bums have moved forward to team up with the waist also). To make matters worse I used to be a very serious racing road cyclist and was so used to having to eat 5 to 6K calories and never gained a pound. Even after I quit due to life hurdles, I still ate a high amount for years and it was not until the last 10 years that I cut way back. Now it seems even on what some would consider almost a diet, no pounds stayed the same, just different spots and allot more heavy breathing on the hiking,So this one was spot on and loved that just chatting, also about how light becomes harder and hared to find epic when ones spends it seems even more time in field. So thank you for the video as always and the same to Nick. Maybe someday will see you in the field and can share some great strong coffee off the Jet Boil and munch down with the Ti Long Spork into a meal of Thai Curry in the bag (BTW Patagonia has some decent meals also).Be safe, best to you and yours and keep the video comingIf you are down in Central California area (coast to Easter Sierra's) give me heads up and maybe I can join you and show you some nice spots I have found (same goes for Appalachia Area in WV, Shenandoah once I finish the work in CA and head back east to home area).

You guys should come to Italy for a landscape photography food and wine tour ✌️
Hey Gavin, 21:12, the trick is “just do it”, mechanically, without even thinking of yes or no, only yes and yes. Even if it’s only 20 or 30 minutes, after that 6 to 10 hrs driving your body needs to move (just that “beep” brain says something else) and you feel so much better after that. Fast walking would be totally sufficient also. Must not be jogging dressed in latest and greatest jogging suite. You sleep also better. And dinner tastes double as good. At least that last point should be sufficient motivation 😄😄😄
Jesus these comments are irrelevant to the video . Eating is eating enjoy what you do enjoy what you eat . Foto this was a epic video to my morning and one of my fav photographers nickkkkkkk great to hear your side of things .
I recently discovered fizzy wine in really lightweight cans. I think there are special hiking hats you can load the cans into. The wine is very low calorie, only 11%, so dying of a fatty heart wouldn’t be such a problem. Falling off the trail could be. You don’t get as many good shots hydrating with wine, but you don’t care as much either, as long as you stay properly hydrated. So stay strong, stick with the steak and beer for breakfast, and keep on videotaping these awesome conversations 😁
Don't take this the wrong way but I think this was one of your better youtube vids. I can totally relate to what you and Nick are talking about. You guys should start a podcast. lol.
Brutal. I think I've been working too hard on my vids when a 24 minute chat seems to get a better response than hiking up a mountain, getting killer shots and recording a bunch of skits. :(
I love this conversation and I have to say that I enjoy those "failure" vlogs because that is the ugly truth. Landscape photography is hard work, why not show it all? It is the journey, the grit and the hard work, the story behind it that keeps me watching your channels. If you are a hard working photographer that gets out there and create all year, you may get a handful of great shots, so dont be so hard on yourself, its not the end result that makes your channels great, it is you guys and your journey
I've only just got to watch this video now and it's great to see two great friends and photographers chat about certain topics. You two click so well. Gavin, you were talking about diet, well I was on the road every weekend shooting and the wrong foods was showing up everywhere. I decided I need to take a drastic step here and quit this crap lol first of all, (you'll hate this) quit the dairy and gluten. No tea/coffee, no milk, instead drink lots of warm water with sliced lemon. Food wise, chicken/ turkey and basmati rice and veg. Fruit and rice cakes or healthy snack in between meals. After a week you'll see pounds fall off fast. Weight loss is 80% of what you eat and 20% excersise which you do a lot of anyway. But I don't think you should worry, I think you look great and you enjoy yourself, that's all that matters. I've had a beer too many so ignore this if this is not whatya wanna hear lol By the way I have a foot phobia, it's making it difficult to view your tremendous vlogs and photography. Thank you for all your great videos , right am away.
For food on the go, have to go with the protein packed trail mix made of dried blueberry granola, whole almonds, some dark chocolate chips, and even some shredded coconut. It holds up like crazy, and really fills you up!
I'm a little on the erm cuddly side !! i try and make time the night before a trip to make something for at least breakfast the next day to take with me and i make little fruit pots to snack on during the day, especially if i'm in a wildlife hide. Its a total bore but i have discovered that only chocolate and coffee at 5am after a long drive doesn't make me my normal happy little self. However all my photo friends know that chocolate miraculously appears from camera bags favourites are either twirls or raspberry ruffles (got to be Scottish to appreciate the last one !)'
Is there value to hiring someone for a consultation to help you plan and pack for this? Do it together, and then incorporate what you learn into lessons you give your clients? Maybe even do a workshop that includes this, having the consultant come along and be one of the instructors on that workshop?
Great video, every thought of starting a podcast (appreciate you’re busy enough!) but would be great to have chats like this to listen too more regularly 👍
Oh God I'm already dreading the Mull trip next year! I've been on this Keto-ish diet for the last 6 months and I've lost almost 40 pounds ... the problem is I'm still enormous .... 😂 My day job is computer programming so I've mastered the sitting part! And like Nick I would kill for a metabolism even a 💩 one! I think we definitely need T-shirts for the Phatographers Club!
Being a amateur photographer in the midwest isnt all bad..we have all the corn, beans, and agricultural shots you can dream of...and some peppering of nice nature shots can be had if you're willing to get off the beaten path.
I love videos like this. It’s like I’m just hanging out at a campsite listening to your words of wisdom. Cheers and have a damn good day to you and Nick!

@@fototripper Catching up on all your videos and this was a nice 1 to 1 to have. Hope you do a few more over the summer when the weather is warmer.

P.S Thomas half killed me dragging me up hills in the Lake District in Winter two years back :)
@@keithdriverphotography Yeah, he does that. 5 Stone though, that's impressive and very liberating no doubt. It's like a passport to mountain tops.
Instead of overweight, I like to consider myself Large Format.
I call it "Full Grown"! LOL!!!
Great chat with Nick. I love these because it's more casual than a regular interview, just 2 buddies hanging out over beer and coffee. So.... if I get skinny will you stop watching?
@@fototripper Oh no, I will be inspired to lose weight also :-)
Nick gets some epic storm shots! I'm not a "Mountain House" outdoorsman myself. Kraft makes meals-ready-to-eat less expensive, better for you, and you can place the bag in hot water to warm them up. This is brilliant, and so relatable. I did a full day photo ramble on Tuesday and here I am on Sunday with joints still aching.
Enjoyable conversation.
Well, you should see the 6-month gray skies in Ontario. They come late October and go away in June.
Ugh. I wouldn't make it through 1

Fried bread is one of the finest things in life but can only be consumed a maximum of twice yearly due to instant arterial blockages.
Hope you have a good recovery Simon. Very sobering.
@@fototripper Thanks mate I beat cancer into remission 4 years ago so I will beat this I guess.
Fun video, thanks
Honestly, the answer is simple. You invite me on your trips; I plan and prepare the meals. I'll cook for up to 4, plus me. I'm a really good cook and organized in the kitchen/campsite/cabin. In return I get to learn better photog skills from you guys, and you get fed good meals.
if you also buy and bring the food we might have a deal.
It looks great in my cupboard, and I now wear budget fleeces, made for fat lads.
hahahaha. Don't loose that cake Andy!
Brilliant 😂 I’ve heard of a metabolism but thought it was a myth skinny people tell us 😏 I’m up for joining the support group 😇
Is that a Deschutes IPA? Lol. Awesome video mate and great talk
Aye, the good stuff.
I was rolling...”Overweight landscape photographer’s, we really are a DYING breed” 😂🤣 great video guys! 👊🏼
Another great video Gavin. I've got one of those metabolism things if you want to borrow it sometime. Lol
I'll borrow it for 2 months please.
@@fototripper I'll pack it and get it ready for shipping
You guys should come to Italy for a landscape photography food and wine tour ✌️
how could we possibly resist????
Change your expectations to appreciation!
Cheers,
Chris
Love this. I'm a phatographer lol great talk and I can relate.
"We are literally a dying breed"...I see whatcha did there! ;) Solidarity!
How do you join the group for Phatphotographers, great idea, minimal walking/hiking
At 59, I feel I should be a charter member of the Fatograghers Society. I have hiked miles simply knowing there is a donut at the end of the trail.
Now that's motivation.
There's not enough donuts on this planet to make me walk anywhere any more :)
@@rustywarrior5288 I can put you onto a couple of places that are well worth the hike. One is in Maine, one in Florida.
@@davidakoubian3025 thanks... long way to walk from Leeds (UK) though :)
@@rustywarrior5288 take a plane and just pace back and forth. That shouldn't make anyone suspicious...
You're speaking my language.
Great video man loved both of your insights . Especially to we more portly Photographers 🤣✌
Very good.
Norway was on the list. One day ;)
You ever meet or shoot with Dave Morrow?
not yet
Thank you for all your great videos , right am away.
hahahah, my filthy feet are giving you mares.
They feckin are!! Haha
For food on the go, have to go with the protein packed trail mix made of dried blueberry granola, whole almonds, some dark chocolate chips, and even some shredded coconut. It holds up like crazy, and really fills you up!
Sold!
@@fototripper Let me know how you like it! I have it as part of my own home diet plan. Just don't mix 90% chocolate, or all bets are off! LOLOL.
@@Design4Training You had to ruin it for me :(
@@fototripper OK, add three almonds and a teaspoon of granola for crunch, hahahaah! Seriously you will love it. Health fats and protein.
Brilliant vlog !! not a camera insight its like we have been friends for years just popping in for a chat.
RPC - Rotund Photographers Club. Finally a group I can join. Bugger, that's not a good thing is it...
Wow, I can't believe Nick is almost 38 now. Oh how the time flies.
You should take note of my upcoming videos where I trail run and Gravel bike with a cut down landscape photography kit!😉😉
I'm in for the Fatographers Fat Club! Great Video!
Great video, every thought of starting a podcast (appreciate you’re busy enough!) but would be great to have chats like this to listen too more regularly 👍
I totally would if I had the time Justin.
@@fototripper #TRUESTORY ...
The chicken and potato is awesome.
It would HAVE to be called "Fatographers"
Genius Frank.
@@fototripper Clearly it should be Phatographer.
I'd buy this tshirt
Sign me up!
Most of us look just like these guys. Normal looking to me, 2 thumbs up...
Congrats on the 40lbs. Even though i'm chubster I do set a brisk hiking pace. Keep up the good work.
I’d buy into that! “I’m not hiking; I’m looking for my lost metabolism.” It’s a work in progress.🤣
Where do I sign up for the support group?!
Im struggling with watching weight too guys! Youre 🔥🔥🔥
I feel your pain! Sign me up. Great content. Inspiring.
Great video. 👍
Being a amateur photographer in the midwest isnt all bad..we have all the corn, beans, and agricultural shots you can dream of...and some peppering of nice nature shots can be had if you're willing to get off the beaten path.
