This is Viktor (age 21) early in his journey and Lin Dan (age 32) near the end of his career. Yet this match was thrilling to watch from start to end, truly a match of generation transition.
One of my favourite matches of all time. I still remember watching live with my friends. Everyone lost their hope on Lin dan at 3rd set interval. An epic comeback 😅
This was really high quality game. LD every shot was so accuracy and deathly that Axelsen sill able return with good quality. Both were like chess master using different strategy and technic in each short. No much unforce error like those current play who make mistake easily.
lin dan win all the points with strategy showing high level iq game axelson was young great advantage in a game like badminton but i wonder how lin dan manage that GOAT
I am extremely curious about what was on the 32-year-old Lin Dan's mind during the second half of the 3rd set when it was 11-3 down while Axelsen, a much younger opponent, was playing so confidently after winning the 2nd set and leading by 8 points in the 3rd set. It would be like sprinting the last mile of a marathon and it's a real challenge on one's stamina, experience, mental state, and skills. Not to mention that Lin Dan had already achieved a super grand slam and he was still so motivated on court!
Scoreline doesn't matter as long as you have the control and feel of the game down. More often than not, the better and more experienced player will trade points for rallies where the opponent has to really push and drain a lot of stamina to win. 11-3, yes but axelsen is visibly gassed and has diminished court coverage in exchange. The real fight in a game starts when either one manages to reach 17 or 18 points. Because if you expend your energy at this stage you can manage to win a slew of points in a row and consequently, the game, before fatigue kicks in. Depending on your condition, opponents condition and score gap; you can even manage to catch your breath by playing only neutral shots and making your opponent sweat and work really hard to win the next few points and then pushing yourself to win the game. That way you help yourself by making sure your opponent is as tired as possible coming into the next game.
Indeed, after all the shots in the rally you do identical and perfect reverse slices to seal it, such flamboyance. One of my favourite LD point is 2011 WC final where he and LCW exchange perfect clears until Lin Dan does the perfect drop. Moments of unmatched brilliance.
