    My Samsung RFG297AARS Refrigerator suddenly started forming chunks of ice in the ice bin. It was caused by a small amount of water intermittently dripping from the ice tray during the water fill portion of each ice making cycle. In this video I show how to remove the ice tray, the ice maker unit, do a complete disassembly, apply silicone sealant, and re-assemble. Two weeks after the repair, the ice maker continues to work perfectly again.
    If you’re not sure whats wrong with your particular ice maker, and you don’t want to deal with troubleshooting like I did, a replacement ice maker is a very good option, and costs about $122 on Amazon. Installation is extremely easy, and takes a DIYer about 10 minutes to do.
    Here's the video instructions on how to replace the ice maker with a new one. • Easy how to replace / ...

      Did Samsung fix the problem with the icemaker in the 2018 models?

      One of the best videos on youtube. Clear, to the point and the process of finding the actual source of the problem was great. Even the music was good. I liked having the words on the screen so l could pause it and make sure l caught it all w/o having to hit playback if l didn't catch all of what was being said. Between owning a home and being a shade tree mechanic l am always researching DIY stuff, and have been for years, and this would rank as one of the top two for overall videos. First one that l will become a subscriber to. Thanks

    Fantastic! I'm now going to put silicone on my shopping list and tackle this job soon. Thank you posting this. I tore mine apart but I had difficulty getting it to leak consistently when assembled or un-assembled. Even after your analysis, my initial thoughts were that the issue must be related to over filling of the ice tray by the controller, possibly due to a valve or water pressure issue. I lowered water pressure to the fridge to see if this helped, but it eventually started leaking again. This time, I took it out and added some dyes to track the water movement. I could clearly see the water start to flow out and empty a good portion of the tray so I new it was not related to over filling. I had mixed results with the attempting to source the leak. However the dye and hard water deposits on the front face of the metal part of the tray gave some clues. My best guess at this point is that the leak is due to some sort of capillary action. I believe that water is flowing up the temperature probe, via capillary action, and over the face of the ice making tray. This time around I sealed the front lip with silicone per your recommendation and it has been good ever sense. Cheers and thank you for this video!

    I'd like to start by saying: @Thrifty Tani, you made an amazing video here!!! I am pretty skilled mechanically, and I figured out almost everything on this particular problem up until a certain point, but it is YOUR video that is the last piece of the puzzle that I believe I am missing. I just wanted to tell you this before I even go off and perform the final steps, because you deserve a great deal of praise for what you have done here. You have made a fantastically clear, beautiful, detailed video to share with others, and I thank you greatly for making it. Your focus on the video is excellent, your zoom makes the picture clear, and your captioning was thoughtful. I have viewed dozens and dozens of videos, as well as read articles, trying to find the source of this leak in my ice maker (compatible model with what you have shown here), and your video is the first (only?) one to show EXACTLY what is going on inside the icemaker, and without destroying the entire thing. (You can probably tell how frustrated I was before I reached your video, lol!) Your test with the water, and your logical conclusions are to be applauded. If I can, I'll come back later and follow up after I make the repair (as soon as I get a little more time), but I just had to tell you right away how impressed I was with you; I know from experience that making a video as clear and thoughtful as this one takes a lot of effort, thanks for doing it!

    I got to say, I didn’t believe it would work. The problem I was having with my Samsung ice maker was exactly the same as yours. I took it apart and spent a long time figuring out where in the world the leak was coming from because I just need to know before I put in the silicone. I tried what you did by putting water in the tray and there was no leak. I could not reproduce it. It bugs me still. But, the silicone is there and so far so good - no leak and no ice clumps. Saved me $130 - for now. So, thank you for your video! Very helpful.

      Hey Gerry! I didn’t think it work either, and I am surprised the silicone still holds to this day! So much doesn’t make sense with the intermittent leak. That’s terrible that it broke so soon! Try calling their warranty number and tell them how upset you are that your major appliance broke after just 1.5 years. I called Samsung for my stove which broke after three years and they agreed to pay for the repairs even though it was out of warranty. Thanks for sharing!

    Note : call Samsung! This repair is COVERED!
    We picked up the food grade silicone from a local appliance shop & I cleaned surfaces with alcohol then sealed. We defrosted / unplugged the fridge for 24 hours then caulked the inside and outside of the ice maker housing on the bottom left.. (long side that meets the left fridge wall). I pulled out the ice maker and auger assembly to do this. Let it cure for 24 hours then reassembled and turned on.
    Note: take the bottom back panel off & use an extra fan to add cooling until the fridge reaches correct temperatures.
    Since doing this I do not have any water in my ice maker dispenser! Works great & worth the 48 hr inconvenience!

      Hi Pat, there’s probably frost or ice locking it into place. Try blowing a fan or hair drier set on on cool around the ice maker for a few minutes. That should release it.

    It wasn't making any noise when I hit the reset button so I took it out to check it. There was ice in the tray, and It was kinda loose (might have been because I took it out of the freezer) but I couldn't move the arms that are supposed to knock it out of the tray. I'm thinking it might be the motor. Any other idea's before I spend the money on a new one?

    I'm having the same problem your repair is showing. I'm curious is there a seal or something that goes into the hole where the shaft of the gear goes? It seems like it would leak through that hole into the motor housing the same or more than down between the housing and the tray. I found water inside the housing as well but could not really tell where it was dropping from as there were a few icecicles on the bottom of the housing.
    Please respond.

    • @thriftytani46
      @thriftytani46  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you’re saying makes sense that the water is leaking into the motor housing, and then dripping down, but when I opened the housing, I didn’t find any water inside. I don’t remember if there was a seal, but I’m guessing there must have been one there to keep the motor dry.

    • @mgate01
      @mgate01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thrifty Tani I was careful talking it apart and didn't see any type ofseals fall out or still in. There's probably not one but just looking at it, that hole is the lowest part of the top of the tray. I'll seal it up like you did and see what happens worst case there's one on eBay for 120$shipped. Thanks for the video!

    Soo... I replaced the ice maker twice on mine and I either got defective units from Amazon or something else is going on. Ice is getting stuck in the tray and the teeth that are supposed to eject the ice are running backwards, ramming the ice into the underside of the guard. The rod never tries to spin the other way (the right way). Just keeps clicking and probably breaking. WTH?! I'm pretty sure my fridge isn't telling any units to warm up the ice tray so they don't get stuck and can spin out as well. Is there a separate board that controls the ice maker or just one for the whole fridge?

  • @matthulvey8615
    @matthulvey8615 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video! You mention that you have an issue with ice clumping. The issue I’m having is the ice maker dispensing a tablespoon or more of water at first, followed by dispensing semi-melted ice. Did you have this sort of problem, or am I looking at a different issue all together?

    • @thriftytani46
      @thriftytani46  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Does it ever dispense solid ice? or is it always semi-melted? It sounds like the Ice maker storage bin might not be getting cold enough and causing the ice to melt. This particular fridge uses cold air blown from the freezer. Try and turn down the freezer temperature as low as possible and see if it makes a difference.
      My fridge would dispense wet ice right after the ice maker dripped water into the ice bin. But once the water froze, I would get solidly frozen chunks of ice.

    • @matthulvey8615
      @matthulvey8615 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thrifty Tani I have solid ice, it just happens to be “wet” as if it partially melted. Seems like the ice maker forms the ice fine. As it sits in the bin it begins to melt hence the water and the wet looking ice. I’ve read of faulty fans on the auger assembly and others claim it’s a faulty seal between fridge and ice maker like you had. Not sure what I’m dealing with yet.

    • @thriftytani46
      @thriftytani46  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The definitive way to see if you have the same problem as myself, is to wait until you hear the ice cubes drop into the ice bin. A couple minutes later you'll hear water filling the ice trays. At that moment, pull out your ice bin and look for dripping water coming from the ice maker. If you do see dripping water you've got the same problem.
      I've seen videos on the faulty seal right about the ice dispenser chute on the door that helped a bunch of people, that seems like a fairly easy fix to try. A faulty fan, is possible. let us know how things go!

    • @matthulvey8615
      @matthulvey8615 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just to follow up, I had a different issue with my ice maker. The cold air duct in the back of the ice room was blocked by a solid piece of ice. That would be the same duct you point out at 6:30 in your video. Mine just looks a little different as I have a RF28HFEDBSR/AA. I checked my ice maker for the leak that you observed, but it didn't leak any water. It appears that the ice maker was making ice just fine; however because the duct was blocked, it could not circulate cold air up from the freezer to keep the ice solid. As it partially melted I got the pooling water and slushy ice. For any others that come to TH-cam searching for answers, I came across a service bulletin that points out four common causes of these ice maker issues. A link to the site is below. A PDF of the service bulletin can be found there. It points out these 4 issues and their remedies.

    How old was your fridge? We are thinking of buying a new Samsung fridge for our new house sometime in Dec or early Jan, has Samsung fixed their ICE MAKER issues?

    • @thriftytani46
      @thriftytani46  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, it was 7 years old before it started acting up. The fridge looked awesome for the first few years, and we were happy. Then the painted plastic parts started to look worn and looks a bit grungy near the ice maker. But just hearing from other folks, all brands will randomly fail. A repair guy said he’s seen guys with same exact fridge and one fine and the other kept breaking. I probably would get another Samsung if it was a good price, but I’m not a dedicated fan of them. My Samsung stove’s circuit board died after 3 years. I had to fight for them to replace it as it was out of warranty. The repair would have cost around $500. The stove cost $700 new! New appliances shouldn’t be failing after such a short time period.

      I made the big mistake of replacing all my kitchen appliances with Samsung, including this refrigerator. They look great but they are really bad quality. Definitively not good value for what they cost. After just few years I lost count of how many times the oven-range, the freezer, the dishwasher and the cloth washer failed. Customer service was poor and they did not take responsibility for their crappy products. My advice, stay away from them.
