Thank you for expounding on the mystical truth of the gospel, which embraces desire and love as inseparable aspects of the Divine, welling up deep inside of man.

You occupy this really interesting space between fringe thinkers and very rigid traditions. Critiques like this feel like islands of clarity in very confusing waters

Beautifully put, although this fact sadly leaves Mark on a fringe of his own.

Smashing content (in both quantity & quality). Thanks Mark!

I think this is mostly a difference in emphasis. Barron made clear that responsibility just was an interior response to transcendent values. It thus integrally involves a positive orientation of the will. In other words, he specified a philosophy of what responsibility should be and is not just using the term vernacularly. Our desire to express does lead to mistakes, which is why children are corrected- so that they can realize that response/desire of the value of connection and community. In instilling values, there is a process of refinement. An untamed desire does not separate the wheat from the chaff, and so fails to realize its proper end. As the intellect is refined desire can better discern its transcendental orientation and not settle for an admixture.

This is not the way it worked for me. I had to free my desire from all external conditioning (nurture) and find my own path to discipline and responsibility. A complete surrender to one single thing...and a very scary ride.

I really appreciate these commentaries Mark. I look at Bishop Barron's interview of Ethan Hawke and his daughter Maya and I see the Father Barron I used to know. But now he seems partially captured by the "anti-woke" critics -- and I have partial sympathy to their diagnosis; however going the 180 degrees opposite has it perils too. Good appraisal of where Bishop Barron is somewhat off.

whoops, it was Athena who gave Perseus the bronze reflective shield to slay Medusa, not Hermes.
