He’s a deeper music fan and more dynamic than people realize. For instance it’s refreshing to hear he was so in love with 4AD bands and early post punk. Cocteau Twins also used an 808 in Garlands. This was another great example of that sound with cross over. And that guitar melody. Wow.
Ughhh this song! You just don't know the countless hours of pacing and rocking chair hours spent with my daughter who was born June 1983. This song and various others were godsends. I could sing along to keep my sanity and sooth her at the same time. Still love this song today, speaks to the gypsy and lover of the road in me, and was great to hear the background of what was going at the time, the changes and new things you were experiencing. My playlist today still has this on it.
Yeah man, it's so chilled... Slightly unusual video though with some woman being forcibly led by some sheriff into a dusty bar or whatever. Oddly, no mention of it by the artiste himself. 😕 Vaguely reminiscent of Geri Haliwell's 'Lift Me Up' video, though that particular track from ' former Spice Girl's probably a bit too chirlish for many Led Zeppelin fans. 😁 Horses for courses I guess. No one's ever got any hope of pleasing everyone with what they do...
It hadn't dawned on me what a struggle it must have been for Robert Plant to make his way after Led Zeppelin. I love hearing him tell the stories and so appreciate that he's doing so! He's grown humble as we all do in our later years. He still has such an amazing voice and I'm glad he's still doing what he loves! He has had such an influence on me through the years. I've always been a fan, although I have to be honest and admit that I had a hard time with his music after LZ for some years actually, but I've grown and become much more open-minded musically. I'm glad for that because I would have missed out on so much more he's had to offer. I'm very much looking forward to season 3!

In the US, Big Log was considered Robert's reappearance after Zeppelin. It was like he was bearing his soul, the video -- the broken down car, the feather being stepped on -- it was a big deal, we held our breath in hopes of seeing him again, and we did many times more.

So if you remember the "Runes" (Zoso) album where four symbols represented each member of the band,,, well, pull up the Big Log video and you will see a guy in a suit stepping on a feather, Robert''s symbol. This was his big US debut after LZ so go figure on the broken down car stranded, swimming in a pool alone and tapping on the window, etc,,, one of my favorite songs and videos, enjoy.

When he goes back to the school house too..and his "inner self" goes to the chalk board ..so much symbolism. He has a huge musical history and legacy behind him. How do you even fathom moving on? How does the audience or fans even relate to you because you are so tied in their memory to something? I guess the Beatles had to deal with that their whole careers. "Should I rest by the side?" Well I am glad he didn't ...he made some amazing music as a solo artist and he did take a glimpse into the past with his old band mates for a brief moment. I like at the end of the video ...a woman pulls up with the exact same car trouble. Wonder what that means? I think the video is a very deep statement for all of us. Of course I was part of the original MTV generation, and lucky for us Robert dove right in to what at the time was the new media. Like many - the video for 'Big Log' (Directed by the late, great Storm Thorgerson - Thorgerson known to many as the artist who also created such amazing record sleeve designs as 'Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon') really struck a chord within me, and is one of the best solo songs Robert ever did - if not thee very best. Much Love, and Respect to you Robert. I'm 51 now, but you're STILL MY HERO.
Big Log is my father's theme song in my mind he is a freeway King w 49 + years and nearly 4 million miles in his log book ....accident free .Thank you Mr .Plant for that jewel .
It must have been strange playing pubs to 13 people after selling out madison square garden night after night in zep. Nice to hear him speak so fondly about Wales too, particularly north Wales, my stomping ground and birthplace.
When I first heard "Big Log", it sounded, to be honest, quite stuck in its time. But I've grown to absolutely adore it. It just has so much... ether to it. It swirls like stars on a clear night when you're driving on a long, straight stretch of highway, driving so long that you barely notice when the stars turn to city lights.
The most intelligent, knowledgeable, musicians out there,, must have seen Robert so so so many times over the last 45 years, Thursday's gig with "Saving Grace" was again sublime!!!
What a treasure Robert Plant is! His songwriting and craftsmanship have continued to improve and improve. Not many of his contemporaries have been able to keep up with him after 50 years. His post-Zep records seemed to carry on in the vein of songs like Down by the Seaside and Fool in the Rain... so, all those albums in the 80s seemed like a natural progression. That was cool info about Phil Collins as he was a master of drumming. ( Any early Genesis records is proof of that! Syncopated Time Signatures, etc., etc.) Big Log still sound fresh today, some 36 years later. Hope RP keeps going strong, delivering strong records and performing!
I was glad to hear Robert praise him in this but I agree, I don't know what happened, saw them in the 1983 tour in St. Louis and it sounded as great in person as it did on the airwaves.
@@Fauxjob I've lived right outside of St. Louis all of my life. I wish I hadn't been so closed minded to what Robert was doing after Led Zeppelin. It's not that way anymore of course. I've grown up and so has my musical mind. This song is so beautiful and Roberts voice is amazing!
Robbie Blunt, what a terrific guitar player. So unique. I wish that Robert had gone further than the bonus live tracks on the 'Nine Lives' box and released all of the pro-recorded Texas '83 material. The King Biscuit release is essential but the detail in those recordings as revealed on the 'Nine Lives' set takes them up another notch.
This song has always been a favorite it totally captures the vibe of the Road of the coming and going it really is a Masterpiece a timeless writing......
I'm not the only one that thinks that song and album is every bit as good and better than your Zeppelin stuff. That guitar weaves through the melody of the vocals in such a way that I never heard that clapping of the drum machine as anything more than an accent on a language. The message still comes through.

I have always been disappointed by the way Robert left the first two solo albums in the dustbin. He rarely does any songs from that era. I'd love to hear Like I've Never Been Gone, Burning Down One Side, Slow Dancer, or Pledge Pin done live again. But no, ever forward, don't trade on your past. While I love new songs, and I respect Robert for playing them, but it would be nice to hear an old favorite from time to time too.
In 1983 I lived in the , Yucca Valley , I just moved there from Southern California, the desert enchanted me , it snowed the first month I was there and nothing more beautiful then the desert in snow. Big Log, tell us more, because it flows like those desert roads, which is a place worth exploring, I encourage, exploration I highly recommend! The High Desert is amazing!

I met John in 1983 the year that ‘Big Log’ was released and every time I hear it I am reminded of him. Myself and John were student nurses back then and spent 12 weeks of the summer on secondment in the local hospital for people with learning disabilities as it was then. We got to know each other quite well during that time and got together after a night out to mark the end of our work placement. One time we had taken a group of young males out for the day on a bus trip to the beautiful west coast of Scotland and it was whilst walking on the beach at Gruinard Bay that I first felt that little spark between us. There was just something about the way that he looked at me that day as we walked bare feet along the shoreline witnessed by the rugged mountains that surrounded the Bay. John was a passionate man, a member of the socialist party and CND he regularly attended meetings and spoke openly about his political views and feelings. For Christmas that year I bought him an all in one set of long johns like the one’s cowboys wore in the movies. I ordered them from a department store in London and dyed them 'socialist red' before drying them, wrapping them and putting them inside a small box, inside another box, inside another box and so on like a Russian Doll. His passion extended in the way he looked at me at times and held me like no one had or has done since. I still remember that look in his eyes as I opened the door on Christmas day after he had received his present and took from that he was pleased with his gift. One dark, cold night we met under the arches of the railway bridge and he pulled me out into the rain as we kissed, the heavy rain dragging my loose hair down and across my cheek and dripped off the end of our noses. We just stood there in the silence of the night, in the rain kissing and laughing before running back to my flat and sharing a bowl of hot tomato soup and cheese of toast. John was different from other guys I had met, he owned a set of binoculars and was keen to show me his telescope he was a keen bird watcher by day and star gazer at night. I loved the way he would put his arms around me helping me to focus on small birds in the trees in Culbin forest and seals in the Bay. He loved to share interesting places of special importance to him and I loved that about him. John had a small Honda and with me on the back we would take off into the hills, go for long walks where we would eat sandwiches, have hot drinks and sit talking for hours about our favourite music and laughing whilst smoking a couple of joints. John introduced me to U2 who were relatively unheard of at the time, The Psychedelic Furs, and The Cure. He also liked Todd Rundgren & Utopia and another band called Camel. He told me he would always think of me when he heard ‘Big Log’ after I had told him that I had once seen Todd Rundgren & Utopia when they supported Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in 1979. I introduced him to the album The White Mansions and my favorite songs ‘Story to tell’ ‘Dixie Hold on’, a track called ‘Last Dance & The Kentucky Racehorse’ and ‘Oh Dixie now your done’ After hours of what John referred to as ‘good going conversation’ (we both loved to get into a debate) we would make love in the woods or on the side of the hills or anywhere really outside when we got the opportunity. One night, John had left his motorbike at my flat for some reason and then drove over later in his dad’s car. He asked me if I would drive his motorbike across the bridge whilst he followed me. I’d never driven a motorbike before and couldn’t drive a car at that time. I was worried that I was going to drop it or crash it and kept stalling it whilst practising out the back of my flat. We gave up in the end as it wasn’t worth the risk and I felt really pissed off with myself that I had let him down in some way because I couldn’t get the hang of the clutch and the gears. Another time John took me out on the boat he had bought together with his dad and his brother, it was docked at the canal at Loch end where it meets the opening to Loch Ness and one day he took me out on the Loch. I spent much of my youth growing up around the Loch and have many fond memories of different places in the area, places I took my own children whilst they were growing up. I also remember the day that John broke up with me. That feeling of an invisible pair of hands round my neck strangling the life out of me, and the sensation of a hard ball stuck in my throat and burning tears trapped behind the sockets of my eyes. It had been an intense relationship that was over by the end of the year. After we split up I went out and bought a brand new Suzuki 125 Trail bike which I had to push up the road to a park where I taught myself how to drive it. I suppose in some way I felt that I hadn't been good enough for him. A few times around the field and I was out on the open road driving around Loch Ness and Abriachan by myself. I had discovered a new sense of freedom. Over 25 years later, I had moved back to Scotland after having lived in the south of England for almost 18 years. I was working as a Nurse Manager in a Care home where it turns out my administrator/friend was a neighbour of John and his wife. (Long story short) My daughter was visiting my friend’s daughter one day, and on my return to pick her up learned that by a strange twist of fate Johns daughter had also spent the day with them. How ironic that our both daughters the same age, would meet in the future. That New Year my friend invited us to a Hogmanay party she was holding. I knew John was going to be there with his wife and family. We got ready to go, and around an hour before we were due to arrive I called to apologise, and say that we were unable to attend. Even after all those years I couldn’t face seeing him again. Of all the relationships I’ve had he was the only man who ever broke my heart. The lyrics and melody of ‘Big Log’ still conjures up the memories and feelings of that time in my life. Like an iridescent bubble suspended and gently turning in the air it holds both the Love and pain of that special time we shared. ‘Big Log’ reminds us that life is constantly moving and changing, that nothing ever lasts, and that there is personal growth and spiritual gold to be had when we open our hearts and fully embrace relationship of any kind. To be fully open to Love makes us vulnerable and open to the pain of loss, it teaches us that to be fully present in the dance of life we have to experience both. In the old days it was the only format for telling stories and spreading news, it was also how people passed on experiences to one another. I work with people with Dementia amongst other things and music is proven to be strong in provoking memories of the past. If I wish to share some personal memories provoked by music from a special time in my life on here then I have every right to, you on the other hand as well as other people don't have to read my comment you can just pass on by, but there is no need for rudeness or nasty replies to comments especially when you didn't even read my comment! My story just might touch the heart of someone who appreciates my openness, honesty and Love that I had for this man in my youth. imho; this is the most underrated song in history- yes it is popular but it should be way more popular. Perhaps a film or a commercial will come along and it will reach a new audience.

Robbie Blunt, what a terrific guitar player. So unique. I wish that Robert had gone further than the bonus live tracks on the 'Nine Lives' box and released all of the pro-recorded Texas '83 material. The King Biscuit release is essential but the detail in those recordings as revealed on the 'Nine Lives' set takes them up another notch.
This song has always been a favorite it totally captures the vibe of the Road of the coming and going it really is a Masterpiece a timeless writing......

I'm not the only one that thinks that song and album is every bit as good and better than your Zeppelin stuff. That guitar weaves through the melody of the vocals in such a way that I never heard that clapping of the drum machine as anything more than an accent on a language. The message still comes through.

I have always been disappointed by the way Robert left the first two solo albums in the dustbin. He rarely does any songs from that era. I'd love to hear Like I've Never Been Gone, Burning Down One Side, Slow Dancer, or Pledge Pin done live again. But no, ever forward, don't trade on your past. While I love new songs, and I respect Robert for playing them, but it would be nice to hear an old favorite from time to time too.

In 1983 I lived in the , Yucca Valley , I just moved there from Southern California, the desert enchanted me , it snowed the first month I was there and nothing more beautiful then the desert in snow. Big Log, tell us more, because it flows like those desert roads, which is a place worth exploring, I encourage, exploration I highly recommend! The High Desert is amazing!

finally saw him live during Now & Zen and Manic Nirvana. truly amazing performer with an unbelievable band behind him. i also listened a lot to his first 3 solo albums and love them all, tho they're obvi not everyone's thing. ftm, Presence may be my fave Zep album, so i may just be one of *those* - this was a great episode. but now i wanna hear about songs from Shaken 'N Stirred (any and all).

A hypnotic song that proves that you can't make generalizations about instrumentation: I never would have thought that simple fake-drum pattern would be so effective. And I'm a drummer and thus hate that stuff! Here it works perfectly. Well, Rob and his pals were and are real artists.

I met John in 1983 the year that ‘Big Log’ was released and every time I hear it I am reminded of him. Myself and John were student nurses back then and spent 12 weeks of the summer on secondment in the local hospital for people with learning disabilities as it was then. We got to know each other quite well during that time and got together after a night out to mark the end of our work placement. One time we had taken a group of young males out for the day on a bus trip to the beautiful west coast of Scotland and it was whilst walking on the beach at Gruinard Bay that I first felt that little spark between us. There was just something about the way that he looked at me that day as we walked bare feet along the shoreline witnessed by the rugged mountains that surrounded the Bay.
John was a passionate man, a member of the socialist party and CND he regularly attended meetings and spoke openly about his political views and feelings. For Christmas that year I bought him an all in one set of long johns like the one’s cowboys wore in the movies. I ordered them from a department store in London and dyed them 'socialist red' before drying them, wrapping them and putting them inside a small box, inside another box, inside another box and so on like a Russian Doll.
His passion extended in the way he looked at me at times and held me like no one had or has done since. I still remember that look in his eyes as I opened the door on Christmas day after he had received his present and took from that he was pleased with his gift.
One dark, cold night we met under the arches of the railway bridge and he pulled me out into the rain as we kissed, the heavy rain dragging my loose hair down and across my cheek and dripped off the end of our noses. We just stood there in the silence of the night, in the rain kissing and laughing before running back to my flat and sharing a bowl of hot tomato soup and cheese of toast. John was different from other guys I had met, he owned a set of binoculars and was keen to show me his telescope he was a keen bird watcher by day and star gazer at night. I loved the way he would put his arms around me helping me to focus on small birds in the trees in Culbin forest and seals in the Bay. He loved to share interesting places of special importance to him and I loved that about him. John had a small Honda and with me on the back we would take off into the hills, go for long walks where we would eat sandwiches, have hot drinks and sit talking for hours about our favourite music and laughing whilst smoking a couple of joints. John introduced me to U2 who were relatively unheard of at the time, The Psychedelic Furs, and The Cure. He also liked Todd Rundgren & Utopia and another band called Camel. He told me he would always think of me when he heard ‘Big Log’ after I had told him that I had once seen Todd Rundgren & Utopia when they supported Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in 1979. I introduced him to the album The White Mansions and my favorite songs ‘Story to tell’ ‘Dixie Hold on’, a track called ‘Last Dance & The Kentucky Racehorse’ and ‘Oh Dixie now your done’
After hours of what John referred to as ‘good going conversation’ (we both loved to get into a debate) we would make love in the woods or on the side of the hills or anywhere really outside when we got the opportunity.
One night, John had left his motorbike at my flat for some reason and then drove over later in his dad’s car. He asked me if I would drive his motorbike across the bridge whilst he followed me. I’d never driven a motorbike before and couldn’t drive a car at that time. I was worried that I was going to drop it or crash it and kept stalling it whilst practising out the back of my flat. We gave up in the end as it wasn’t worth the risk and I felt really pissed off with myself that I had let him down in some way because I couldn’t get the hang of the clutch and the gears.
Another time John took me out on the boat he had bought together with his dad and his brother, it was docked at the canal at Loch end where it meets the opening to Loch Ness and one day he took me out on the Loch. I spent much of my youth growing up around the Loch and have many fond memories of different places in the area, places I took my own children whilst they were growing up.
I also remember the day that John broke up with me. That feeling of an invisible pair of hands round my neck strangling the life out of me, and the sensation of a hard ball stuck in my throat and burning tears trapped behind the sockets of my eyes. It had been an intense relationship that was over by the end of the year.
After we split up I went out and bought a brand new Suzuki 125 Trail bike which I had to push up the road to a park where I taught myself how to drive it. I suppose in some way I felt that I hadn't been good enough for him. A few times around the field and I was out on the open road driving around Loch Ness and Abriachan by myself. I had discovered a new sense of freedom.
Over 25 years later, I had moved back to Scotland after having lived in the south of England for almost 18 years. I was working as a Nurse Manager in a Care home where it turns out my administrator/friend was a neighbour of John and his wife. (Long story short) My daughter was visiting my friend’s daughter one day, and on my return to pick her up learned that by a strange twist of fate Johns daughter had also spent the day with them. How ironic that our both daughters the same age, would meet in the future.
That New Year my friend invited us to a Hogmanay party she was holding. I knew John was going to be there with his wife and family. We got ready to go, and around an hour before we were due to arrive I called to apologise, and say that we were unable to attend. Even after all those years I couldn’t face seeing him again. Of all the relationships I’ve had he was the only man who ever broke my heart.
The lyrics and melody of ‘Big Log’ still conjures up the memories and feelings of that time in my life. Like an iridescent bubble suspended and gently turning in the air it holds both the Love and pain of that special time we shared. ‘Big Log’ reminds us that life is constantly moving and changing, that nothing ever lasts, and that there is personal growth and spiritual gold to be had when we open our hearts and fully embrace relationship of any kind. To be fully open to Love makes us vulnerable and open to the pain of loss, it teaches us that to be fully present in the dance of life we have to experience both.

In the old days it was the only format for telling stories and spreading news, it was also how people passed on experiences to one another. I work with people with Dementia amongst other things and music is proven to be strong in provoking memories of the past. If I wish to share some personal memories provoked by music from a special time in my life on here then I have every right to, you on the other hand as well as other people don't have to read my comment you can just pass on by, but there is no need for rudeness or nasty replies to comments especially when you didn't even read my comment! My story just might touch the heart of someone who appreciates my openness, honesty and Love that I had for this man in my youth. I might also remind you that most songs are written about Love in some form or another and Loss isn't that what "Big Log" is all about? the deep Love and loss for Roberts best friend John Bonham.

imho; this is the most underrated song in history- yes it is popular but it should be way more popular. Perhaps a film or a commercial will come along and it will reach a new audience.
