Winter is here, and it’s time to build! Today we push our new FT Maker Foam to the limit by building a 15 foot replica of the iconic iron giant. This classic metal robot made its first appearance in 1999. Our goal is to see how big we can build this only using only FT maker foam. Maker Foam was designed specifically to be a fantastic material for both building radio controlled aircraft and also artistic creations that need to be strong yet light. Our new formulated version is water resistant, structural, and is also able to be illuminated. These projects are something that families, friends, and even STEM programs can do. Please let us know in the comments below, if you would like to see patterns or even speed build kits of our classic nonflying FT designs.

While it is awesome, I have to say I'm a little disappointed. I saw that thumbnail for the video and thought back to the movie where the Iron Giant had rocket boosters... Man, I want to see this thing fly.

It is funny my Dad's friend is friends with one of Flitetest's editors and he sent my Dad's friend a picture of this thing about 2 weeks ago, so I got to see a sneak peek of it in production haha, super cool project!
Despite the fact that I am deaf and there's no captioning yet, it makes me smile seeing one of the best cartoon classic taking to the sky. You mad lads are legendary.

Talking about large models, I came across a vid on the 'Experimental Aircraft' channel where a guy in Greece scaled up what I imagine was one of 'Flite Test's F22 Raptors big enough for it to qualify as a powered flying Experimental plane!
The design has been bought out by an American company, Fisher Aircraft, who are planning to make kits for the public. It is powered by a Rotax engine with a 3 blade pusher prop.
I saw a video on that plane. The prototype was at Oshkosh this past year.

It is amazing how much you can do with just foamboard. I am a big fan of your channel and have been inspired by it alot, especially your videos with the monster-size planes. why do you not man a monster water plane like the Seaduck or maybe something like the Canadair CL-415. that would be awesome to see. I made a huge 13 foot tall foam robot puppet out of R.L. Adams foam (dollar tree) back in 2014 when you guys were using that for your builds. I named him RLA-14 in reference to the foam it was constructed from and the year he was created.
Still 6h50m to go but happy new-year Josh and family and flight test crew i wish u all the best for the new year 💓
Now if you can get the iron giant to fly you have to recreate the scene from the movie!!!! The one with all the planes and maybe some tanks on the ground!!!

The funny part for me is, I received [The Iron Giant: Signature Edition] for my birthday, which was four days ago.
He needs lights in his eyes. That would make it come to life. There should be some lights that would fit at the hardware store.

Soooooperrrrmannnnn:-) (I'm not crying; you're crying!) For someone making this in a little smaller scale, one possible way to do the articulation is with bungee cords; they will keep a tension on the joint but allow you to pose it and then leave it where you posed it. Some of my kid's cheap plastic action figures used rubber bands this way. I was able to articulate a flat foam t-rex of six foot size with just tabs of plywood and strong rubber bands, worked easy and effective. Josh, maybe next time The Big Guy and Rusty The Boy Robot?

Never really noticed how much influence was taken from Iron Giant when "Robots" was made. Rodney Copperbottom is basically Iron Giants small brother.
This stuff is cool no doubt. but with foam and modern electrics...anything can fly. would be nice to occasionally see the old traditions, like balsa and MAYBE an aluminum runner. gas engine. when the power to weight wasnt so lopsided.
and I own 1 gas model and 3 electrics lol. just would like to learn more about old school sometimes

Very awesome probably my most favorite build, I actually 3d printed one of these even tried just print a giant head from the robot but that failed.
Its not a plane but sure is cool. Would be neat to paint and weather it like metal. Fun stuff. Next year-More scale like planes, Fokker D7 would be nice kit, more B17 stuff (but don't destroy it).
