According to Yesudas, it was the most challenging song for him to sing. Song has been composed based on different Ragas like Bilaval, Kaafi, Bhairav, Yaman Kalyan, Khamaj, Asavari, Bahar, Darbari. Its taken 3 days to record this 13 minute ascending-descending song with 59 takes!! Orchestra team includes the legends like Hari Prasad chourasya, Pandit shiv Kumar Sharma, Partha Sarathi. To add up.. After the recording yesudas fell sick.. A small correction recording took 2 days.. And it was not 59 takes.. Yes there were many takes but not so many.. I forgot the number.. And the song was first offered to mohd Rafi sir who rejected it.. It then came to das sir.. Movie name is tansen.. It did not release or definitely a national award song

I bet any professional singer to sing this even after tons of practice and many takes. Sorry, no chance to get this level of pitch perfect singing, range, expression and umpteen nuances. Amen to the God of singing. I strongly feel that the film never got released because the Bollywood big wigs got scared of his performance, nothing else!
Possible. Another film, a Rajesh Khanna-starrer named "Majnoon" (1979) met with the same fate. That unreleased film had a gem of a duet, " Yeh Haseen Raat ..." in the mesmerising voices of Yesudas and Latha Mangeshkar, composed by Khayam.

Yesudas consider Rafi his guru, Rafi Saab refused to sing this song due to ill health, shortly after this song was released Rafi Saab passed away 1980. Yesudas can't even sing like this again because he is not in his prime any more.....

yesudas considered raafi saab as a respect. which is needed for a great singer. why north indian always had ridiculous mindset to admit a singer from south? you are not aware about yesudas. Sameer Jha yesduas is one of the greatest singers born on the Indian soil ever, irrespective of films or not. But never rate him higher rafi, it's foolishness. no singer is higher than him. yesudas in a majority of his songs did bring in the same spiritually melodious vibe owing to his beautiful voice. But the purity with which a song's every layered and nuanced emotion and expression could be delivered in the most seamless and easy way with inherent buiilt in style and variety of modulations timed perfectly, is all in the bag of only mohammed rafi, and no one else.
and manna dey=yesudas. and kishore kumar=yesudas on the commercial front. and kishore kumar was no less a genius, without formal classical training, he owned most of the raaga based songs in his career like a pro, doubt if yesudas ji could ve gone to such an extent without his musical training. having said so, in classical, yesudas>>kishore kumar.
anon I think you are judging Yesudasji fr his hindi songs. Don't forget he's a South Indian and still managed to give hits after hits in bollywood. You are comparing him with Rafi saab only on hindi songs. I request you to listen to some of his malayalam and Tamil songs to understand the range he has. Yesudas will sing this sing even at this age. He just received his 8th National award at the age of 78!

Yesudas: I wanted to do justice to the composition. Never ever have I taken more than 15 to 30 minutes to record a song. But we took five to six days for one song. At the end of it, when certain people told us `Dada, this song is too heavy,' I had to intervene. I asked them why were they making a film on one of the greatest musical legends of India if they did not want pure classical music. It is true that we owe a great deal to our listeners
