My family of 4 landed in Funchal on Monday. We are here for 2 months doing reconnaissance for a future home base. We will be on the lookout for either a blue VW or a man walking around with the best looking beard on the island. Would enjoy talking and shaking your hand.
Olá Myowness , Thanks for watching and supporting our channel 😀. And welcome. Send an email . We can meet up. The description of the video has the link. Obrigado Alan
Learning a new language is challenging. Despite it being over 42 years ago, since we arrived in Norway, I still remember that it was exhausting but necessary, for us to learn and master Norwegian. Perhaps the worst thing was, as you suggested, that so many people speak English. This is a disadvantage. The worst time for us, was about six months after we arrived in Norway. We thought we could understand the language better than we could, the Norwegians we met introduced more dialect words into our conversations, which resulted in mis-communication. At the time, Trish, my wife, met several English women, who had married Norwegian men, after the end of World War II, and moved to Norway. More than thirty-five years they were still using English to communicate. They had never mastered Norwegian sufficiently to communicate.
Very useful video! Thank you Alan! I am a few years before the retirement , and looking at Madeira as #1 candidate. So much to figure out. Because of my age, multiple insurance agents are contacting me telling me I must get life insurances, LTC insurance, create some trusts etc.... while I am trying to figure out whether I will really need this if I move to Madeira. Hard to solve an equation with so many unknowns. Your videos are a great help.
Olá Ninel, Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. Start now doing the research to make the the best decisions when it's time. Good luck on your journey. Obrigado Alan,Leslie and Wolf
Best lesson I’ve learned from you so far? It’s ok to screw up. We are awaiting our D7 now, planning on arriving Leiria mid March. Lucky to have friends locally that helped a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! What a wealth of information! I always wondered the difference from south and north sides. Thanks for sharing about that. Which side were these levadas on? I so enjoyed seeing the wonderful food gardens and the cows! Thank you!
Olá Jeanne, Thanks for the continued support of our channel 😀. The levadas are all over the island. Look at the app, "WalkMe" to see where they are. Obrigado Alan, Leslie and Wolf o
Hi Alan - This video has a wealth of valuable advice for anyone thinking of retirement overseas. There are many pitfalls to avoid along the way that can create significant problems. Your excellent recommendations and advice will be of great help to many people. Cheers!
Thank you , always nice to watch your videos. Been working on my D7 for the last months, finally got ready to submit (Live in Florida, DC jurisdiction) , NO MAIL applications are allowed at this time. There is apparently a strike... who knows when it'll be back on track and how they would get over the backlog... this started in the beginning of December 2022 !! unknown to a lot of people I'm sure. Was greatly disappointed. On wait as we speak.
Ola Doran, Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. The strike never came to fruition. You may want to co tact VFS and schedule your in person appointment. Most people are getting their VISAs approved within 6-8 weeks. Have a wonderful day
Every bit of this advice is gold in my experience so far! For those doing a scout trip to Portugal/Madeira with intent to get a visa and move there at some point, I'd highly recommend getting your NIF prior to your trip and dedicating a day to set up a local bank account while there. Getting a bank account from outside Portugal is becoming increasingly difficult.
Olá Cyn, Thanks for the continued support of our channel 😀. Wolf's hair looks like high maintenance to me! But, it does look cool. Yeah, that Bull was just chilling 😎 Obrigado Alan
This is one of your best videos, although I always enjoy most of them. I'm always concerned about Greer. I know you take excellent care of him, but your legs are long and poor Greer is going at full throttle because his legs are so short - just a thought. Also, a have a male-type question for Alan since you were a mechanic, do you know of a device to convert Portugal line voltage to U.S. 120V / 60 cycle voltage. I'm moving to Madeira in the spring of this year and have a large amount of techonology equipment that requires U.S. line voltage. Thanks for considering this long comment and my request. Best, Jim
Olá Jim, Thanks for watching and supporting our channel 😀. Greer does have short legs, so we take breaks often when walking with her. As far as your electronics, firstly, make sure the equipment is dual voltage, and listed for 220 and 110 voltage. Brought a hair dryer from the states and smoked it, because it was not! You will need power adapter "F" for Portugal. We use them for computers, and they work fine. Make sure you check your application thoroughly first. Hope that helps Alan
Hello Alan and Leslie! I've watched countless channels on moving to Portugal. Your's by far, especially this one, have been extremely informative and very enjoyable. Listening to you is very calming. I'm a retired teacher in the states. But currently working again in order to make my move within the next year. Thank you for giving us so many details!
Thank you for this invaluable information and quality videos! I am planning now. I will visit a few more places before making any final decision. You are correct. It's not a vacation but an interview!
I was sold on Cuenca Ecuador until I discovered your channel. Even though it would cost a bit more to live there, Madeira would provide me relatively inexpensive airfare to the whole of Europe to explore. Now planning a scouting trip for later this year. 👍
Ola Alan, I'm a bit blessed in that my family is a mix of Italian and Puerto Rican and I speak both, at least well enough for a friendly limited conversion, my question, has it been difficult to do daily routine business in Madeira for you both being English speakers? My wife, who only speaks English is concerned with not being able to do those tasks without a limited skill set of Portuguese. Obrigado!
Olá Al, Thanks for watching and supporting our channel 😀. Good question. It helps if you can at least learn some basic words. But for the most part, in Funchal you can get by. But if you are moving here, you need to learn the language in time. Obrigado Alan, Leslie and Wolf Obrigado Alan, Leslie and Wolf

Can golf cart be driven on roads in Madeira?
Don't see any. But they have these tiny electric cars that can.
