I have always been awed by this theme, being the final boss theme, and yet is not in line with Sakuraba's style when it comes to battle themes. He does, being well known for scoring RPGs, have a pretty wide range in his sound, and does compose some beautiful, calm tracks.
as for his daughter's age, this may blow your mind, but she was only 9 when she recorded those vocals

This is an amazing song: "The wings of the beginning"
To avoid spoilers there is this in game explanation as to how you the player can interact with the world in the game, and a big part of the story is finding the reason for that: it's not done as a mera commentary or anything like that but it legit makes you part of the story, and the song plays at the very last boss fight when all hope is lost.
    A wonderful song

Your comment on how choral music (especially religiously inspired music) can be creepy reminds me of an essay I read by Immanuel Kant. He spoke of what he called "the sublime," the feeling of awe, wonder, and terror of being in the presence of something far greater than yourself. It was how he described the feeling of being close to God, and I feel like it's the feeling a lot of church music tends to evoke, with its grand choirs, its expansive acoustics, and its tendency to use equally grand instrumentation.
On the one hand, it can be comforting to feel like you are in the presence of something so much greater than yourself, especially if it seems benevolent. But if you are not certain if it's benevolent, it can feel more like a towering monster overhead, which may destroy you utterly with no chance that you could ever resist. And yes, it's definitely not something you'd want to hear in an abandoned building.

Schopenhauer holds a similar opinion, saying that the sublime is that which is directly threatening to the Will. He liked to cite the art of Jacob van Ruisdael as an example of the sublime.

Hoping to see more Baten Kaitos on here in the future, especially the battle/boss themes since there are so many bangers in there. This series really deserves more love and attention, hoping the remasters coming to Switch in September will get a lot of new people discovering the early days of Monolith Soft. They're JRPGs of the early 2000s for sure, but I feel like many fans that started with Xenoblade will find a lot to love here.

The singular most important piece of vgm in my entire life. I picked it for myself, because there's no way I can share music and not share this.
The analysis was very interesting, once again the music expressed itself in a way that allowed you to manifest more or less the right feelings despite having zero context. Solemn (churchy), Intimidating, Sad but Hopeful, yet Scary. It's actually kinda crazy how accurately you got it. Also calling me the hell out with Nier lol, funnily enough, I'm generally averse to child singers, but I have indeed made exceptions for the Emil songs and this one ofc. If I remember correctly, Mio was 9 years old when she sang this.
The song title is actually "The Wings of Beginning" as there is a heavy emphasis on wings in the world of Baten Kaitos. Not sure exactly why they decided to make this a 'family song' but perhaps the game resonated with them, because a lot of the devs for the game tend to recall their time with this series very fondly, I'd imagine it might've been the same for Sakuraba. The first half of the lyrics depict someone leaving flowers at a lake under the light of the moon, the second half allude to the beginning of a journey 'to the next world.' Interpret that however you will.
This is from the 2006 prequel game, Baten Kaitos Origins (also known as II in Japan), you previously reacted to the original 2004 game, Baten Kaitos Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. Both are Gamecube JRPGs with a large focus on the use of cards, cards are your attacks and combos in combat, your equipments, your spells, as well as your quest items when exploring the world.

I've been waiting for more Baten Kaitos reactions for so long ! Also the name of the person requesting this being Magnus is just so perfect. I hope you have more requests for these two games, especially with the remakes coming out soon cause this is such a hidden gem and the soundtrack goes hard.

Baten Kaitos and Origins are both RPGs. You had it right the first time. The battle system uses cards and there's deck building but still very much jrpg. I've played the first game but only a bit of this one so I have no idea of context, but wings are important in the world, so that's a fitting title. It's pretty!

From my favorite rpg series of all time. Has been dormant for so long but is finally making a comeback with some remasters next month!

I'm glad Baten Kaitos is getting some love. The first game was /odd/ but it was super epic for a GCN title.
I also love the comment about not wanting to hear this in an abandoned building at night. I agree.
I think the family stuff is awesome. Some of these collabs when you know them add some depth and investment to the music.
This composer is also pretty different. Chaotic Dance from the first game is incredible. Chief among these reasons is the song repeating the phrase "Feeling Gay" in an incredibly stylish manner.

Actually there was one song by Sakuraba that appeared on the channel, which was "Boss Battle" from "Golden Sun-Dark Dawn". I personally suggest "Doom Dragon" from Golden Sun 2 (or the Super Smash Bros Brawl version "Golden Sun 2-Battle Scene/Final Boss") and "End of a Dream" from Tales of Phantasia OVA

Is it bad I actually own these games for the gamecube but I haven't played them... 😅
This was a very pretty song, reminded me a bit of Emil from Nier.

      Only a little bad. lol
Altho I've always wanted to know what it feels like to play Origins first (since it is a prequel) and then go back to the first game; So if you're willing to (potentially) ruin your experience with the story you could play them in that order for science.

@@AT7outof10 lmao I'm sure that would make for an "interesting" experience but I think I'll just stick with the intended order whenever I get around to them, which might be awhile with my backlog xD

Do you also have some songs from Odin Sphere on your list?
