Á good, clear and instructive video. No overcomplicated explanations or instructions. You're a natural teacher of culinary skills.
You are too kind-thank you 😀
I love how Matt jerry rigged your porch table to pull double duty by transforming into a huge strainer! How incredibly clever! This recipe looks easy if you are physically able to pick up all those apples, or have someone to help. I love watching you work together as a team. You really are so special.
Jerry rigged😂 wow I don't know if I would use those terms I would say they had to improvise or perhaps he should have that invention pattend
@@jackielight6908 Look up the definition in the dictionary. It's appropriate. No insult was intended.
@@deepayton3021 Thank you.. :)
I grew up in Maryland. My father, grandfather and uncles were always using this term as they had all gone through the great depression, and had learned how to take a few different items to create something totally different to meet a new need. They were proud of their ingenuity, and I was proud of them . This skill is all but lost today because there has been a lot of money around to simply buy what you wanted or needed. I would rather have this skill and be creative. It shows a high IQ and a respect for making do. To have a spouse who has this ability gives one an added sense of security because they know their spouse will find a way when a way is needed.
@@deepayton3021 I always thought it was "jury rigged" :)
@@orthohawk1026 That's referring to the law...unless of course you are joking....ahhhh yes..I see that smile now. :)
OM Gosh! I haven't thought about crab apple jelly since I was a kid. Thank you so much for reminding me of this delicacy. Now if you make APPLE BUTTER too, "I've done died and gone to heaven" as Grandma Vernie used to say❤❤
Send me a jar of that jelly, I'm hungry! 🌞 God bless Granny Louzine Wilson with healing and health and love care and protection with deliverance from tumor, I ask in Jesus name 🙏✝️❤️🌞
I was thinking the same thing so Tipper better get busy making 244,000 jars for all her subscribers 😂 I bet we were all drooling watching her enjoying that foldy jelly samich! Thank you Norman for that wonderful prayer that I also lift to Jesus in my daily prayers 🙏
@@thomasmccardle725 God bless you also 🙏✝️❤️🌞
Blessings to each of you. SO enjoy your content. Crabapple Trees give us so much: Colorful flowers in Spring. Summer green and Fall fruit and such a striking Winter silhouette. Wow. What a gift all-round.
Thank you 😀
This was the first time I've seen crabapple jelly being made. Thank you Tipper! Looks delicious.
My First time as well
Glad you enjoyed 😀
I really love watching you put up food 🥰 you inspire me to try these things myself.
I've never tried crabapples but I've made apple scrap jelly before and the pink colour is always so lovely.
Steph, Australia
Thank you 😀
Oh my gosh! 😮That strainer with the little table, BRILLIANT!!! 🤗 I now have a strainer for such, from that idea. Thank you! 👍❤️
Glad it was helpful!
That was genius, Matt's straining invention. That grab apple jelly sandwich and milk sounds delicious. 👌 thanks for the video Tipper. Continued prayers for granny and your whole family. ❤
The color of the crabapple juice and jelly is so beautiful. I really enjoy eating food that grows wild too. Thanks for sharing and God bless y'all. 🙏
Matt, you are a very good man. I love the way you pitch in and help Tipperwith domestic chores. So many men would not. My late husband always helped me . I think that is a sign of a real man. Matt reminds me so much of my late husband in so many ways. You two are such a beautiful couple. God bless you and your family. My prayers include you all and especially Granny right now.
My mother, who was not a super homemaker type, made crabapple jelly one year, and it was the most beautiful pink color, although it didn’t have a very strong flavor.
She also made watermelon pickles a couple of times, with a delicious clove taste.
I have a friend here in Colorado who goes out in the foothills and forages for plums, grapes, and apples.
My mother used to make this brings back memories. Praying for grandma ❤
My mother used to make crabapple jelly it was good she stopped because she said it took to much sugar. We had one crabapple tree, and that thing would be overloaded I use to take them and give them to my uncle's horses the horses loved them.
I remember setting on the front porch with my grandma, mom, and aunts pilling apples to make apple butter. People my grandma knew would stop to talk My grandma could tell stories of her childhood growing up in the Clinch mountains of Appalachia. Those are some great memories.
Measure your juice out in batches of enough to make a cooking of jelly. Then freeze. This winter all you have to do is thaw the juice out and add the sure jell and sugar. Cook and pour in jars. Then enjoy with your wonderful biscuits.
I love this tip! Thank you for sharing, I'm definitely going to do this from now on.
This definitely remind me of about fifty years ago. Someone gave me access to her tree and I got a ton of the little apples. When I got to the juice part, I put the that into ice cream pails and let it cool. Then I put them into the freezer and made my jelly in the winter. Matt was very smart to set up the table for you.
Thanks for teaching how to make the jelly and improvise with the cheese cloth on the upturned table!
You are so welcome!
I've never eaten crabapple jelly! Mostly homemade grape. The color of it was just spectacular! I bet it tastes delicious!
It's so good!
Miss Tipper it's a real pleasure learning these little gems of information from you.
Matt joining the family business once again proves to bring new talents! I remember being told crabapples have a lot more pectin than big apples, and no need to add more. I'm happy to see you putting up even a little jelly for this year. I've enjoyed watching you in years gone by, but this year's priorities were correct - taking care of family first. Those jars are so pretty, the color is like a jewel.
That straining rig is inventive
Thank you Tipper for another Dear Memory of my Brother Richard and I eating crabapple's off the tree.I think we were 7-8 or 8-9 years old, can't remember who's tree it was, but I do remember the sourness and Richard making a sour faces.with tears in my eyes, thanks again for the Memory. God Bless. Jean 💗&🙏🙏's for Granny
My sisters and I used pick crabapples for our granny who made crabapple pie and crabapple jelly. It's been over four decades. Thanks for this recipe Tipper!
My wife and her mom made candied crabapples and the jelly too. I love them!
My Mommy used to make this jelly! It was so good! Nice seeing you make some for your pantry! Nice of Kim to offer the apples! Thanks for sharing! God bless and much love! 💕🤗🙏🏻
What a great idea by Matt to strain the juice, Southern Engineering
We love crabapple jelly! The color and the taste bring back wonderful memories. My SD grandmother made it every year. Taking advantage of the food around us is indeed a gift. (Their tree is huge!)
The strainer set up is very clever, looks like it worked perfectly! Love to see y'all sit and work together. And, so nice that you and your family live so closely together to have that close relationship.
Our gardens didn’t “make” and the trees were all decimated by late frost…disappointing but certainly a less heartbreaking reason than what you all have been dealing with. A grad season. Prayers continuing for Granny 💛🙏🏻
Those last frosts can just ruin a crop. Thank you for watching and for the prayers 😀
Looks delicious and super lovely. I remember the concord grape jelly we used to make when I was little. Thanks Tipper.
Wild plums are my favorite! They are little but mighty! The jelly looks delicious!!
Oh, the memories that flooded over me!! Mom and Dad had a crab apple tree when we were kids. I remember going out and just picking them, and eating them! This looks awesome Tipper! Thanks for sharing.😊
I listened with my mom.
She loved it
She is struggling with depression
I think your channel gave her some joy.
I will pray for her!!
We just picked some mulberrys at our friends house, they are so yummy and keep well in the freezer. They are a nice treat straight from the freezer on a hot day! Mama made some jam from last years berries last week.
Your apple jelly looks delicious 😊
That's great 😀 We like mulberries too!
May I ask where you are located? Our mulberries are long since gone. I wish I had tried to make mulberry jam this year.

Thanx for sharing Tipper, that Jelly looks delicious. Crab Apple is my #3 favorite, Persimmonis#2, and Muscidine is the #1. Love all the memories your channel gives my brain. Prayers to all, God bless.😃😃
My neighbourhood growing up was full of crabapple trees but we didn’t have one. Our gang of kids used to go raiding crabapples. It was fun and exciting but we never got many apples before a back porch light would be flipped on and we were scolded. Now my Mom did make crabapple jelly and I’ll never forget the pink colour and delicious taste. Good memories. ❤️🇨🇦
Love the innovative way Matt came up with to strain the juice out. I'm gonna use his idea as well. Thank you for sharing!
I made "Steve's" grape jelly on Monday, and it turned out great. My neighbor has a box of apples for me, so I am going to preserve them and make apple scrap jelly. 😊
Wonderful 😀
such a great idea how to strain the juice.
My favorite things in my 2 Grandmother's pantry was always the jellies! Such beautiful colors, they looked like jewels on the shelves!
Everytime i watch one of your videos Im remembering my grandmother , my mother making jelly and so far all the foods you make.. I bet you make a mean bowl of soup beans and corn bread and fried potatoes.. Oh how I miss my grandmother and the delicious foods she made.. My mom doesnt cook anymore cause she has Alzheimer's. I do try to make the stuff she made.. Thank you so much for sharing..God bless..🇺🇸❤️🌹
I have only made crabapple jelly one time . My husband volunteered me to make crabapple jelly for a man that had crabapple trees and give him a jar. He brought home an ice chest full of crabapples and he and my son helped me start on the jelly. The video I watched said to cut them in half and cook them a couple of hours then run them through a strainer. They started out helping them remembered they both had something else to do. I also cooked it without pectin and a lot of sugar . I started at 11 am and finished at 7 pm that evening. I told myself I would never do that again but after seeing the way you did your jelly I might , you make it look easier that way. The elderly man was happy getting his jelly and I told my husband not to volunteer me again. But he knows I like to make all kinds of things from foraged fruits and vegetables.Blessings to you and your family and prayers for Granny.
I just made 5 rhubarb pies and 4 pumpkin pies. I should be making some chocolate pecan pies dizzeled Tennessee whiskey for Christmas.
As a little girl in a then sleepy DC (many moons ago), our elderly neighbor had a grape arbor..my sisters and I would gather in her kitchen to help, watch her make her famous grape jelly...magical memories of Miss Isabelle Smith. Thanks for your wonderful lessons...
😀 Love those memories! Thank you!
That color though 😊 so pretty
They turned out so pretty! Love the color ❤
Looks wonderful!❤
Your precious jars of all-natural jewel-tone crabapple jelly are feast for the eyes and tastebuds on the cusp of fall.
How nice of Steve and Kim to share. I can’t remember if I’ve had Crabapple jelly. I’m sure it’s delicious on a hot, buttered biscuit! It sure is a beautiful color. Take care and God bless y’all. 😀❤️
Your videos are soothing, and help me with anxiety.
I'm so glad you enjoy them! And sorry you have to deal with anxiety. My girls do too so I know it's tough.
I am so excited! I have 2 crabapple trees that I have never even thought about making jelly. Your instructions are so clear. The only downside that I have to learning of this new discovery, is that last week I noticed my yard around the trees that are usually covered with crabapples this time of year, were void of crabapples. I had been seeing the crabapples all summer on the trees but, what happened to them..... as I walked around investigating, I found evidence of the crabapple bandits.....deer, probably several large deer from the evidence left. Next year, I will harvest as soon as they start to fall from the trees. One of the trees is right at the corner of my carport, very close to the house. I am shocked that deer came and hung out a while so close to the house. Thank you for sharing this video, I can't wait to try my hand at making crabapple jelly next year!
When I was growing up, we had two crabapple trees in our yard, my mom always made jelly. Seems like after she boiled the crabapples, that the tan them throug a fine sieve. My parents moved and the trees are long gone…I sure miss those days. ❤
Looks delicious 🍎
That is a beautiful jelly, I’ve never had crab apple jelly…not sure why my Granny didn’t make it cause I remember there was a crabapple tree on the farm…she did make persimmon jelly & it was so good…continued prayers for Granny & all your family ❤
What a genius idea to come up with the cheesecloth set up. Thanks for the video. It's always a good day when I get to see you all.
My grandmother made crab apple jelly it was the most delicate flavor and color very light pink
Tipper, you might find a cone strainer with wooden pestle to be very handy. It could strain your apple mash in a few minutes. It can be used to strain seeds and pulp from most berries and fruits for making jelly. It can also be used to strain seeds from tomato sauce. Ours is nearly 50 years old. A web search revealed they are still available. I recommend getting one made of stainless steel, rather than aluminum, as well as a model that includes a stand.
They do work so well 😀
I love crabapple jelly! Especially with some homemade cat head biscuits!! ❤❤🙏
So good!
Looks good. Hope you all have a great day
Thank you!
That was neat watching you make jelly & the color is so pretty...you could give those jars for gifts...cut material to put on top with jute rope or ribbon...it looked pretty easy to make
Just call Matt " MacGyver "...ha!
Yall have a good evening...
Oh how I enjoyed this video! I love crabapple jelly but have never personally made it myself. That’s why I don’t mind paying local folks who make it cause it’s so good! My mom used to can like you with you with the boiling of the jars. I don’t ever remember her doing any water bath afterwards either. I do remember that she used the old rubber rings that fit on glass tops which were secured with metal screw tops. Pretty old school I guess! She also canned cooked whole crabapples in sugar water with stem, peel and all! They were scrumptious!! I’m like you Tipper, I find such joy in picking and preparing all the incredible plants that God provides for us. We have lots of chokecherry trees where I live in Alberta Canada that make wonderful jelly and syrup as well. I think you call them serviceberries in the US. Anyway, you are certainly inspiring me to get canning so thank you for that!!
It's great that you truly appreciate the past, Tipper. Stay safe!
I just picked apples the other day, & in the orchard was a crab apple tree. I think I’m gonna try making some jelly. Thanks again for sharing all your wisdom. It’s truly a treasure to me. 😊❤😊🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’ve made many different types of jelly, but never crabapple. What a pretty jelly! Thanks for showing us!
I've never had crabapple jelly looks yummy and so interesting how you made it! Thk you Tipper..Have a beautiful night 🌙 ✨ Blessings...Camille 😘❤
Have you ever done pickeled crab apples? Delicious! Love your videos!
I haven't-that sounds good 😀 Thank you!
We have those exact crabapples. They are called Flowering Crabapple trees. We had one in our front yard when I was a kid and Daddy, who drove a school bus, would pick a paper sack full and the kids would eat them up. It got sick and died. Daddy, fortunately, remembered the name and we got another. We, Daddy and me, always make at least one run of jelly and our neighbors and friends do too. It makes the prettiest color of jelly. We cook ours out, we have never used Sure-Jell with it. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it is just how we have always made it before we could afford Sure-Jell. I make my strawberry with it. I have never seen anyone with this particular flowering crabapple tree besides us. LOL I knew it instantly!! Plant you one at your house! We use the whole thing too. We use a pillow case to strain it. We skim it so the jelly is pretty in the jars we do eat what we skim off though. It is delicious too! We do wipe our jars and we do turn them upside down until they are cooled. We lost about half of our apples this year. In February a warm front came through and the apple tree and the blueberries flowered. Then a cold, cold front came through. The apples had not fully flowered so we do have some. We lost all the blueberries, they were loaded down and it was a devastating loss. Blueberry jelly is another one of our favorites (as well as blueberry cobbler).
What an exquisite color. The jars sparkle like gems. Almost too pretty to eat.
I always remember my great aunt because she had a big crabapple tree that was always covered with apples evey year. So we gathered most of them and my mom always made crabapple jelly every year. My mom who is turning 81 this year gets out and picks blackberries and raspberries that grow wild on our land and she makes lots of jelly every year, she has started to slow down now because she just isn't able to work like she did. She quit having a garden now but some of our friends always brings her sruff from their garden and shares with my mom. Like I've told you before we just live across the mountain from you and we share a lot of the same things as you when it comes to preserving all the stuff from the garden and from the wild. We share the same traditions I find it as we all that live in this area share a lot.
Matt -that is a genius idea for the cheese cloth!! Thanks for sharing, just brilliant!!!
Tipper that jelly looks beautiful!! Such a pretty color. I know that you all will enjoy that all winter long!
Your jelly looks so yummy. It is pretty to. I sure missed getting my Mother in law and Sister in laws figs this year. They don't do nothing with them but snack on them a little but here in Tennessee last year right about Christmas we had an unusual hard freeze that killed them. I always made my Father in Law fig preserves. He loved them so much. I guess it is time to plant my own tree lol
The fig I had planted didn't make it either, it was just a year old though 😀
I absolutely love these!
😀 That is great! Thank you for watching!
That is a beautiful color. I canned apple pie filling this morning. Looks yummy 😋❤
We have a lovely crabapple in the yard. Blossoms so pretty in the spring. No fruit this year due to late frost here in New Hampshire. I've been letting them go to waste year after year. Now you've inspired me for next year. Thanks, a bunch.
Muscadine.Jelly too is yummy 😊
Sure-Jell, at least in the boxes I purchased this year (about a dozen) no longer puts that info sheet in each box. I needed it, at a time I had no internet. Beautiful video.
I wish I had some crabapples to make jelly. It’s been years. ❤
My mouth is watering. Love the simplicity of this recipe. What a great idea using the little table that way
Looks so good Tipper! Your Matt is as handy as a pocket on a shirt, rigging up that cool system for letting them drain! (That's a term my Appalachian Grandpa used to say!" "Well he's as handy as a pocket on a shirt!"
That looks good. Mama had Crab apple bushes. She kept them trimmed back. The four gave all she could use and give away. She gave a Lady permission to get Sprouts and they stole every bush. True to her nature she just prayed for them and said something like "they must of needed them more than I did."
Love crabapple jelly! Very simple, yet very delicious! I love it on toast ,with butter ,and with peanut butter with a glass of cold milk 🥛 of course...thanks tipper, God bless y'all 😊🙏🏻
The fact that we can't get crabapples and jam ..I salute you and would buy them from you Tipper...wonderful jam❤🍎😘😘😋😋😋😋
Thank you Tipper I have never eat crabapple jelly looks very good.
My favorite is crabapple pickles! The stem stays on the fruit…. So each pickle has its own handle. YUM❤️
I grew with crabapple jelly and my mom used to make chokecherry jam too, i sure do miss the old recipes my mom did
❤😊wow that looks so delicious!!❤😊😊❤ thanks tipper.❤❤
A little story, my mom use to make crabapple jelly ( about 50 + years ago ) and the skimm’ns were a special treat, we had our own tree. She use to put the cooked apples in an old flour sack and hang it from a hook in the ceiling, just couldn’t barely wait for the jelly to be made. Another way she use to preserve them was pack them in jar, cover them with a simple syrup and add a few cloves. Come winter time open a jar and pop them in your mouth, of course hang onto the stem and gently pull with your teeth, what a treat.
That one bread sandwich you had, we called them ‘door shuts’ and still do.
Love those memories 😀
that was so smart how Matt strained the apples!! the crab apple jelly looks yummy. It's so relaxing just to watch you go through the process of puttin' up the jelly. LOL now how many of us here gonna be out at thrift stores or yard sales on the hunt for one of them tables so we can make us one them strainers!!!
Such pretty jelly, so good you never let things go to waste.
I never knew you could make jelly just from juice and sugar. Amazing!
Tipper, this brings back so many memories! Crabapple is my very favorite jelly, muscadine is second favorite.
Thank you for posting! I plan on jellying some crabapple so this is very helpful.
Those made pretty jelly. Looked delicious.i just ate a bowl of red beans. Yall call them soup beans. Thank you Tipper.
Sounds like a good meal 😀
It sure is a pretty color.
I adore this as my mamaw used to make crabapple jelly and it was one of my favorite times of year. Thank you for this!
Beautiful jelly! When I was growing up, we had a small farm in the country, outside of San José. Mom would make “guayaba” jam. Mmmm. We loved it on buttered toast or fresh bread. Thank you for reminding me of her. Love from Costa Rica.
