This was a fantastic review. Ordered the K8 Plus last week and waiting for it to arrive…Specced it out to 64gb ram, and plan to upgrade the 1tb SSD to 4tb when it gets here. I’m going to be using it hooked up via oculink to an eGPU for games and local ML applications
Please ignore the people worried about you turning into a shill. I doubt they worry enough to back you financially, and I love the mini-pc reviews. Keep up the great work and thanks for this one. Oooo! I can't wait for the Strix Point mini-PCs! I'm biting my nails...
Last child of Zen 4 before Zen 5 unfurls all over us. Less than one month till Computex! Also just a detail but from what I've seen 8000 series looks like the same specs but has had interesting power tweaks and generally performs quite a lot better in lower power machines.
Waiting for the Strix Point announcement to slurp up a Ryzen 5 7640HS mini-PC for very cheap. Especially if I find a mini PC with a Phoenix engineering sample, which is an even better deal than an average barebones system
I have 3 of these running different python data structures continously on each. They save space are actually pretty damn fast. I upgraded each one to 64gb of ram and a 2tb m.2. So I guess there are uses for it...
GMKTEC still sell the 7840 for about 10 quid less than this one. I'd spend the extra simply to get the hidden improvements you might (only might) get with a new model e.g. USB C PD should work better (improves slightly with each gen) and they might improve the cooling a bit. You don't get any BIOS upgrades with this type of product, so this type of replacement chip, as opposed to an upgrade, might benefit from that as well. Good review!
Crazy idea but NPU can be used to make AI in games better. Ultimately creating a game with *real* difficulty options as the AI learns from its mistake and git gud at trying to defeat you, no need to play sweaty Call of Duty with spicy chats, just do it with the NPU AI in single player game.
It would need to be an entire new mode though that is hard to code and get right, and not many players will even be able to comfortably play it. Classic AI in games is stupidly hard to do, I don't think really adaptive AI will come out any time soon
Technically, AMD does have CPUs with Big.Little(or P & E Cores) "Phoenix2" CPUs like the 7645U and 7440U(also 8500G & 8300G on desktop) have Zen4 and Zen4c cores in the same CPU
I dont know about the benchmark you are talking about for SDNext, but if you just installed stable diffusion with either Automatic1111 on nvidia or ishggytigy's version on amd, you could just test the itterations per second.
To be fair I would argue that AMDs driver level frame generation works best if you have a 165Hz+ monitor and is able to strike a framerate of around 80fps. I use it for cyberpunk at 1440p native. and it comfortably gets the game into the 120-170fps range... Still waiting for FSR 3.1 in Cyberpunk, will it ever release?
Meh, it's not that big of a deal really, I just had to explain why I wasn't able to test the one thing that is claimed to be different over the 7840HS!

ETA Prime is a YTChannel and a lot of his videos are criticized for not being sufficiently credible and that he's more of a showcase for vendors. There's a fair amount of hate on the guy but if you know that fact when you're watching his videos (he doesn't offer a lot of negatives or criticisms), then you're left with an enjoyable showcase and that's fine too. As for the miniPCs, what's humorous is that when they really started to hit the mainstream a couple of years ago, they were great for emulation and retro gaming and general PC productivity. You could hook these up fairly easy to a TV and have a lot of power for some fun older games. Then, as the miniPCs have become more and more powerful on the graphics side, they're expected to be far more impressive for gaming than they really have the ability to be. Can you play a AAA game on one? Yes. Should you? Well, that's always in the eye of the beholder, but I'd probably pass. EDIT: This video makes it pretty clear that there's not much benefit on this newer generation of mobile processors from AMD, so I don't think Iceberg Tech deserves any comparison to ETA Prime. That said, I actually bought a K8 and just received it but haven't set it up yet. I'm curious to see what the BIOS updates from last month do to the device to reduce fan noise and there's some other videos that state that they got better results from using the silent performance mode in the BIOS (which is obviously counter-intuitive). So there's more to dig into this hardware than was presented. But again, comparing this to ETA Prime content is excessive. I thought this video was good.
You really showed your true colors today when you refused to pay that $5000 license to test this one random chip that I've never heard of nor care about.
But thanks to ETA Prime I now know that there are only a handful of proper mini PC manufacturers that are worth buying products from, ETA Prime is actually a good channel. If you think that every video he makes on any product is his personal endorsement, you're very wrong - don't project your consumerist mentality onto a channel that just posts benchmarks of various computers. Both Iceberg Tech and ETA Prime are exactly that, and not ad channels. Don't watch the telly

Sorry, it's not "Zen 4+"
can't wait for Zen 18+

Did I miss you talking about the thermals?
I could also see this being nice for someone who mostly uses their PC as office PC and playing some 2D indie games

your new intro is pretty cool
FG shouldn't really be used if you have under 60fps without it, that's why it probably won't look good in most games
Good review man.
Any idea if these mini PCs can handle larger than 2TB SSDs and more than 32GB of RAM?
I like how you actually drove a real race along the benchmark route in Forza Horizon 5.

Why 1080p medium instead of 1080p low in starfield my man? It seems an odd choice given what the target for these APUs are?

500$??? That's a super good deal!
Say might you be willing to Benchmark Mechwarrior 5? It’s very CPU bound, I am curious how APU’s handle it.

I love that AMD is out-NUCing the NUC concept.
CAWK POINT (had to do it).
Regarding the errors in setting up SD.Next, I can maybe fix them if you tell me what they are.

FYI HDMI should die.
When your standard, no longer has a well defined spec, instead a mish mash of optional features, you no longer have a standard.
I think this review could be condensed into a youtube short considering there's not much to cover here

Ah yes another "new" CPU from AMD in another mini-PC.
What do you mean "new"
CPU refresh of the 7840HS basically, AMD and intel this year especially are doing a lot of CPU refreshes.
