The material which is slightly atracted by a magnet is called paramagnetic substance..ex..aluminium,copper........the material which is strongly atracted by a magnet is called feromagnetic substance..ex iron,nickle,cobalt....

Your short cut method might not be true for every substance.... as Calcium has even no. Of electron then why it is paramagnetic...similarly copper has odd no. Of electron but it is diamagmetic....
