Every commercial jet engine plane uses this. The big fan blades you see in front is what is shown here on the left. There is a shaft that run through the center to drive. In the GE jets there is a gear down happening though the drive shaft. That allows the blades to not spin super sonic causing damage and the blades pitch is higher pulling more air, most of which bypasses the engine and provides thrust. Cool stuff.

Are you talking about recovery turbines? The Americans used them too on alot of radial and some v12 engines. The Italians even made the first operational jet powered solely by jet thrust, but the jet itself was powered by a v12 piston engine.

...uuhh actually... The flame is out before the 1st stage turbine inlet guide vanes (not shown ). The flame going through the turbine is a little misleading. Good diagram otherwise, shows the free power turbine relationship and the gas path relatively correctly.
Using that style of combustion chamber actually has minimal effects (if not positive ones) on efficiency. It makes for a lighter, more compact, and in some cases a more serviceable engine. Although it’s only normally only used on smaller engines. (Where compactness matters)

It’s called a reverse flow combustor. It makes the engine more fuel efficient. Lots of modern engines use that design.
Reverse flow also prevents FOD too!

Because the engine produces shaft power for the propeller rather than accelerating exhaust gases.
