stunning!!! Ford did a beautiful job with this, the Collector's Series Mark V, and the Diamond Jubilee editions done in 1978 both in the T-Bird and the Mark V!!!!
You have a beautiful 1979 Thunderbird. My parents had a 1978 dove gray Thunderbird I loved driving that big beautiful car. You just don’t see these beautiful cars much anymore. Happy safe driving from Swansboro nc.😎
Great video and awesome 1979 Thunderbird Heritage. I had a 1979 Cougar XR7 the same color with the leather interior. The color was called “Cordovan,” like the popular Cordovan Bass Weejun loafers. The Cougar XR7 had the same instrumentation and climate control air-conditioning. My car had a “Quadraphonic Sound System with Built in CB Radio.” This was the height of the CB craze and the radio volume would decrease when a CB Transmission would come through. I replaced the factory installed rear speakers with Pioneer speakers. The difference in sound quality and depth of range was incredible. Perhaps changing speakers and keeping the original radio on your next car. My car also had an electric moonroof which I thought was really cool. Thank you for taking the time to share.
Hey man that is a beautiful car !! I saw you at the light this morning….I didn’t want to bother you but my passenger was asking me to ask about the car😂😂 I kept saying no man and he tapped the horn so you rolled the window down and let me know you had a TH-cam channel!! Thanks you have a new subscriber
Ford used acrylic enamel paint - not lacquer. I always liked this generation of Thunderbird and owned a '79 that I drove daily for many years. It was bright red with a white vinyl top, white pin striping and a red cloth interior. Great car. Drove it daily for 8 years and sold for more than I paid for it!! Your Heritage is a beautiful survivor, take good care of 'er!
Had a 1979 cougar chocolate brown metal flake gold orange interior it was a best riding car I ever had loved that big beast still got the 351windsor motor with the fmx tranny that was fresh rebuilt in 1994 got the perfect 8 track player radio would love another one some day
My dad worked for Carey Paul Ford. In Decatur ga from 1961 to 1992 retired as a shop foreman. Anyway he traded my mom’s 76 elite lt.green green top and in on a black 79 diamond jubilee, gray in, red pinstripes wire spoke wheel covers ,302 cruise but manual Windows and locks.
My father had a beautiful navy blue 1979 Thunderbird with white interior. I was 15 years old. He used to let me drive it to school by myself sometimes.
TBird is still beautiful ❤ I graduated in 79 and my mom's best friend had one. I thought she was rich. It was either midnight blue or dark green..I think. Had sort of a fancy gold or bronze factory mag wheels.❤❤
This is a very nice sample of this generation T-bird. I always considered this generation to be a "down-marketed" and de-contented T-bird compared to what they were before this, but they are a helluva lot better than the terrible ones of the following generation. Nice Bird!
Ah man, this gives me feels. My first car in high school was a gray 77 thunderbird. It wasn't quite as fancy but I did have the split seats with the power driver's and power windows etc. I didn't have the tach. Instead, I had the non-functional clock. Lol I also had the 351M which was also like 129hp. It couldn't get it off its own way. I threw on a dual exhaust, you could definitely hear mine. Man, I miss it.
I sold one one like this with 26k miles and I wish I hadn’t sold it. It’s my color. Mine had the cloth seating, which I prefer only on this model and I love the gold plaque. I had an nos one and had my name inscribed on it. I think they look fantastic. I even found a set of NOS Michelin X tires which just made this car look as if it just rolled off the assembly line. I sure wish I hadn’t sold it but I had over 15 cars in LA at the time and was moving and didn’t have the ability to keep them all but have massive regrets. I kept my 80 Signature Series Mark VI 4 dr in this color, so I still got to enjoy the color. Get car and congrats
My brother owned 77, 78 and 79 Town landau's. They were such awesome cars fully loaded. The 77 was black, the 78 was maroon and the 79 was a burgundy color. They all had Leather interior and all the goodies. I loved driving them. My Dad owned Lincolns ,had Mark's and Town Cars, also fun to drive, got pretty spoiled being able to drive them. Your Heritage is definitely beautiful.
OMG…how fitting, …Michael Jackson “Off The Wall” came on. Hence, that too was released in 1979. My mom had a white 1978 that she bought brand new. Of course I was only 5, but I remember it very well, as it was my first new vehicle, so I remember that new car smell. I hope to own one someday!!! My grandpa had a dark blue one. Thanks for sharing!
My grandmother had this car except it had a moon roof. She would drop me off for football practice and all the other kids called her Rock n Roll Grandma. The car was sweet. She had it 1 year and traded it in on a baby blue grand marquis. Wish I had it.
Sorry, I just got to the end. Other than year, my car was identical to the one on the cover of the book on the right. Same wheels and everything. Though being a 77, I didn't have the turning lights, and my taillights were full width with the reverse lights above the brake lights not between them. I preferred that look personally. I would love to find one of these in this fine of condition. I actually still had mine up to a few years ago when my mother relocated and I had to get rid of the cars I had at her place as I had nowhere to store them. Lost a 76 Mustang II Mach 1 with the 302 and 4 speed. It was not a great day. Both ran great too.
The front grille and the taillight setup with the separate reverse light were unique to 1979. The 351W was a bit better than the 351M, which was essentially a slightly smaller 400cid, which was no longer available for the 1979 model year. As for the moonroof option, for whatever reason, I remember seeing them on Mercury Cougar XR-7s more than on Thunderbirds. To this day, I still occasionally have a dream that involves my first car, a 1977 Thunderbird in dove gray color. It was the base model with several power options. Lots of memories, fond and not-so-fond associated with that car.
Very nice. Based on my Mark V, the fan speed will go up and down a bit on its own, at least on the middle two settings. Hi is just high...I am forgetting if the low setting will automatically go up a notch when needed, or just stay low. Besides improving the speakers, the best thing to do with the factory radio, if you ever want one back in, is use an outboard amplifier. I had the head unit with the quadrasonic 8 track player in my Lincoln modified to also provide me with preamp outputs, bypassing the internal amplifier completely when connected to the RCAs that were added (the original connections to the internal amps were kept intact), but some people - if not concerned about purity - will just use tap into the normal output into an external amplifier with speaker level inputs.
Careful the transmission doesn’t pop out of park and “bird” begins to do perpetual circles . . . By itself. And yes the Ford paint was the best back then IMHO - it will clean and polish right up to look as good as when it was sitting on the sales lot new.
My parents purchased a red base model Thunderbird in 1979 at Cloverdale Ford in Winston-Salem, NC. The 302 was too small for that big car. Your's is super fancy. Dad traded it off in 1985 for a 1981 red Cadillac Fleetwood with the V8-6-4 engine.
Does it have power seats and if so are they multi function? It looked like there was a knob to adjust the side mirror but you failed to mention it. You should have front loaded all the features that were included in the Heritage package. You did mention that your car didn't have the power moon roof. Were there any steering wheel adjustments? The trunk carpet is in amazing shape. Did you shampoo it? You got a real cream puff when you bought this car. It's a real cruiser with comfortable luxury appointments. The leather interior is in excellent shape. I had a 97 T Bird and when things started going south like the power antenna, moon roof, and slip differential Ford no longer had the parts so I had to go to a third party that charged an arm and a leg. I bought the 97 new but kept it too long. That is my reservation in buying these old cars even when they are really clean low mileage examples. when things start going south get ready to shell out the cash.
Did I hear the seat belt warning chime? I know you repaired yours , but I didn't hear it when you started the engine? Wished you had showed it and talked about it, but overall a good video of the car!!'
My dad and I, when I was 16, walked into Suburban Ford in Sacramento and bought this car for my mom. It was white on white leather. The carpet was also white and very plush.
My first legal car was one of these (a 77 with a rotted out vinyl roof). Way nicer than mine was. This was the only version of the T-bird offered with a T-roof from the factory.
Ford’s of that era had the tilt function integrated into thee turn signal stalk. The stalk looks to thin to provide that function but it works perfectly. Push the lever forward and the column tilts.
I had a 1979 Ford T-Bird that was dark green and loaded with a 302, but the engine died around 90k. I traded it away and who knows what the dealer did with that leaky trashed engine. However, I really liked the car until that happened. As far ethanol gas, you can go to Maverick Gas Stations and find clear gas, which is real gas without ethanol. It will run a lot better with fuel without ethanol.
These where greast cars, very heavy, I remember the wood in side know as zebrano wood? It was a cushy ride, The front grill pushed in, that amazed me. Nice Car
These were typical Fords of the era and the T-bird wasn't much different than a Lincoln Mark. Both handled horribly and the 302, or 351 had been emissioned to death and I don't think either of them cracked 200hp. The mark IV with it's big block 460 wasn't much better in the day. They got about 12 mpg tops with the Mark getting below 10. They were just horrible to drive in Winter because the rear end was so light you had to fill the trunk with sand bags and that sagged the rear of the car, so people didn't do it and constantly got them stuck. My brother got his stuck right in the street that was plowed and couldn't leave the curb. Really. On a plowed street. The newer year Mercury Cougars were the worst for this. Many rear wheel drive Fords suffered from that problem. In fact, almost all of them. The larger cars like the LTD or the Crown Victoria were much better balanced cars. And didn't have big blocks in them to make them front heavy.
Yes. These were definitely not the performance years. However, I love the styling and comfort of these cars. Great a/c and comfortable seats with super soft leather. Also, these cars have always been very dependable for me and the cost is reasonable to maintain.
That car is absolutely beautiful
Thank you!. Glad you enjoyed!

Yes, you are correct. I've got a few of these with tilt columns.

What a beautiful example. They were a perfect version of the T-Bird mystique. As a GM guy,I had forgotten how beautiful they were.
You mean are . 😊
Beautiful car in a really nice color. Incidentally the right music for that time played on the radio. Cool.

I own a 1975 Ford Thunderbird. I had a 1978 Ford Thunderbird in the past. I love my Ford Thunderbirds!!!!!❤❤. I am from Montgomery, MN.

You have a beautiful 1979 Thunderbird.

We took a trip to Swansboro in the spring this year and really loved that town!
My Parents also had a Dove grey 78, took my drivers license test in it. Really liked that car!
Some laugh today, but these were beautiful and exciting when they came out. They were so much better than the previous model.
It still is beautiful! My folks had a brown one.

i had the 78 diamond one,, had the sun roof and factory cb was the best next to the 78 mark v diamond
I love that this edition has a Tachometer. Did the GM or Chrysler competitors offer this?
Most did as an option
Does all of the ‘79 Ford Thunderbird Heritage Edition have leather seats?
My dad and I, when I was 16, walked into Suburban Ford in Sacramento and bought this car for my mom. It was white on white leather. The carpet was also white and very plush.
Awesome! I'm glad this sparked a memory for you!
Beautiful car!!!!! Is it still for sale?
Thank you. No. It is not for sale. Just wanted to share it here on TH-cam.
Also exclusive to this model are the color keyed bumper rub strips.
My first legal car was one of these (a 77 with a rotted out vinyl roof). Way nicer than mine was. This was the only version of the T-bird offered with a T-roof from the factory.
Uncle had one of these same color same wheell also maroon interior
My mother had the 1978 cream colored.
The Cougar XR7 had the same
Time for a Coyote swap or a nice 347 . C4 and a 9” rear. This bird is nice
Beautiful car. I have a 77 with 46k. Is your 79 for sale?
Thanks. Not for sale right now. Thanks for asking!
It would have been nice to turn down the blower fan a bit.
The drivers rear quarter has been in a fender bender
Another video removing the seatbelt chime and the retractor if it's the problem would be awesome! Thanks
No tilt wheel?
Yes. It has the tilt wheel.
