I'm getting back into RC after being out of the hobby for a decade so I need to show the instructors at my local club that I can still fly. I bought a RTF E-Flite Apprentice STS 1.5m which comes with a DXS transmitter. No where on the Horizon website or the Spektrum website do they explain how to use the DXS as a student slaved buddy box. I even read the DXS manual and was a bit confused because it doesn't show a "bind button" and only talks about binding the RX, and basically I was left with the impression I had to buy the wireless SPM9747 training adapter which of course is NOT necessary unless I want to use the DXS as an instructor buddy box. Yours is the PERFECT video. THANK YOU!!
Hello Captain! Thank you so much - wonderfully explained. Thank you! Bought a DXe to teach my 10 year old to fly. The Spektrum manual is pretty spars so your kind help is very much appreciated!!
Good man yourself clear as mud Sir .. I have an older first generation DX 8 so I guess I need to get a more modern version that I can use it as a trainer Thanks for posting this video…Slan
This is a very good setup video. I have noticed however on models where there has been a need to reverse a servo on the primary (Instructor) transmitter, it doesn't reflect the same characteristics on the DXs... they are reversed i.e. opposite from the Instructor transmitter. Any ideas, suggestions?
I've been looking for this information! Thanks for doing your video. Would I be correct in assuming you installed the optional SPM9747 remote receiver in the DXS?
@@CaptainLeo Horizon Hobby replied: If the DXs is being used as a slave you should not need extra parts. If the DXs is being used as a Master radio then you will need extra parts. You will set up the NX6 for master more than likely and then bind the Dxs to the NXs like you were binding to an airplane.
Wireless trainer mode? I wonder if I actually needed the link cable I bought... I want to connect my NX8 to my old DX6i for when my dad is practicing his helicopter flying. He can do okay but with his eyesight sometimes it gets away from him and he panics a bit and that's when crashes happen. Being able to pull him away from walls and such would be great.
Why did you choose Standard Instructor over Pilot Link Instructor? Also, I too was working with the Aero Scout and it's transmitter. Is there a way to have the model fly on advanced, no Gyro (Beginner and Intermediate).
What if you dont have an expensive computer radio?like a DX6 or DX8 or NX6.....just a cheap introductory radio like a DXS that came with the trainer plane.
Thanks for the tutorial. What purpose does the Start Trainer menu have? It’s under the NX Function List 15 lines down. The Modes are Inhibit, Instructor or Student. I’ve never used it in the last 3 years as I see no value.
Your welcome :). I only use the trainer mode as shown in the video. That other function I have never used. You could ask Horizon or Spektrum for further details or check the manaul here. www.horizonhobby.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-horizon-master/default/dw71e1af07/Manuals/SPMR8200-Manual-EN.pdf
I have the rtf model I use a Dx8e to put on trainer mode but the instructor trasmiter the ruder just move a little the student have full motion...Don't get it 😢
I bought the DXs based on this review. For some reason I cannot get it to work. When it does bind the switches operate different functions, even if I turned them off in the trainer menu. Do you know how to do a factory reset on this or change modes? I cannot get the mode to change.
My DXs came wirh the trainer plane and I set up my NX8 with the template for the same plane. Hence both had the same channels on the same switches. You might try connecting the DXS directly to the plane, note which switch is which channel and then set up the NX8 the same. Also study both controller manuals. Hope that helps.
Does the DXs need any additional hardware or adapters to be used as a trainer remote ? Meaning of my friend has a DX/NX8 and I wanted to use the DXs would it work ?
Did you need to install a Spektrum RC SRXL2 DSMX Remote Receiver into the DXs? I have a DXe and it works great as a buddy box except it has been turning off unexpectedly. Seems to have a lose wire somewhere. I want to replaace it with a DXs but I was told it needed that receiver
Hello Brian, I did not add anything to the DXS, simply bind it to the NX8, no cables, no attachments. Then bind the NX8 to the plane. I assume it's probably the same sor the NX6/8/10, but I have only tested it on the NX8. Perhaps some others have tried it and can comment here.
I'm not sure. Never tried, seems like putting the cart before the horse. There is an option on the NX8 to be the student controller, but using a DxS as an instructor would be something I never tried, nor would I have any want to.
No, the Instructor must use the NX8 to have overall control over the flight should the student loose control. The DXS would have to be programmable for it to become the instructor transmitter.
This was a lot clearer than either manual, thanks so much for helping me.

Happy to hear that 👍
This was the only clear instruction I got for a NX8 to DXs buddy boxing! Thank you
Great to hear!
Thank you, very easy to understand. Going to setup my Carbon Cub for my daughter.
Lucky Daughter, enjoy flying :)
Very great video, quick and has all the information + a demonstration which is needed. Many thanks!

Greetings from Germany
Very helpful guide, thank you
Wow that was clear and easy i have the NX10 and all we need is an nx and a dx radio😊

I didn't install any optional hardware.
@Captain Leo appreciate your reply, thank you.
The Dsx is out of the box ?? It says in the instructions an additional box is needed for trainer
It worked fine with my NX8 and DXe. Also tried it with the little batman looking controller (SPMRMLP6) and it worked.
Hope this helps.
@@BBearBuilds Believe that means if the instructor wants to use a DSX. I initially thought the same thing.
Q: On the DXS radio did you have to install a receiver in the compartment where batteries go ?
No additional items installed. Just bind the DXS to the NX8, like your binding to a plane.

Did you have to buy any module to install in the DXS for this to work? A tech at Horizon Hobby told me I need to buy a SPM9747 receiver.
No additional module
