The Future of Interstellar Spacecraft

  • In science fiction, spacecrafts explore every inch of our universe. Starships travel at warp speed across the Milky Way. Massive space stations drift through the cosmos, harboring ships and spaceplanes from strange planets, orbiting different suns. Science fiction paints a pretty picture of interstellar transportation, but will humans ever explore the universe beyond our solar system?

      So, I'm not trying to hate but I really did not get the same level of enjoyment out of this as I do out of kurzgesagt so I've thought about why and @koranos hopefully I can offer constructive feedback:
      -Video title
      Almost all of the video is about OLD ideas about how to achieve interstellar travel, and about existing spacecraft. There's really not much hypothesizing about the future in this video.
      - Project Daedalus
      Daedalus was sort of a sister to project ORION, but this video kind of misses the point of both of those projects. Yes, they would go fast.. but the point is that they could go SO fast as to achieve relativistic speeds, which in layman's terms *slows down time* and means that humans could reach another solar system in a single human lifetime (even though a thousand years might go by on earth)
      - Antimatter thrusters and warp drives
      Umm no, you should just cut this part of the video out. Antimatter thrusters are not considered to be plausible by any reputable scientists. 'Warp drives' are interesting on paper in the same way that string theory is. There is no proof or even reason to believe that they are possible to make.
      It is *very* likely that nuclear pulse detonation engines are the best thing we will be able to make for quite some time, and possible the best thing that is physically possible to make. The only other *remotely plausible* way to power a spacecraft would be if we were to create a fusion generator to use as an engine, and the science is still out on whether that is actually physically possible either.

    Sending any object to another star system, regardless of its size and function, would be a stunning achievement. One problem we have though is patience, these things, like colonizing new worlds, might be something achievable over long periods of time. The problem is we live in an existence where countries struggle to last individual people's lifetimes, and thus, we may not have stable enough institutions domestically as a species to support such major feats.

    • @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
      @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We have more than enough stable institutions. We just lack the will to confront these issues at the moment.
      As for the colonization of new worlds. Ark Ships such as sleeper vessels and or generational ships will likely be our best bets for interstellar exploration with humans onboard.
      Everything we need for such ships is currently on Earth and the solar system. Create the technology that we need neccessary for deepspace travel long term for either preserving individual humans and or insuring that a colony ship is able to be a temporary home for a generation or more for long term travel to a distant solar system.
      All we need is the will. Education, encouragement, and the willingless to work with each other is the main issues to deal with.

    • @jnnfccc1794
      @jnnfccc1794 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent "Everything we need for such ships is currently on Earth and the solar system. Create the technology that we need"
      You know this is a contradiction right?
      My point about the institutions is that we would have to have stable governments in place to routinely launch these trans-generational voyages. Them getting there and firing us a "we made it" note could be several lifetimes apart. Establishing something stable and turning it into something more than two disconnected planets may take time also.
      There is also a flaw in transgenerational ships. There is a possibility they could end up being stranded in interstellar space. For example, if we launch a ship that takes 5 generations to make it to the destination, and then technology develops where it is only one lifetime, there is a good chance the transgenerational ship will get passed up and left behind by the one generation ship with no one able to do anything about it.

    • @jnnfccc1794
      @jnnfccc1794 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wys.stefan Maybe, but to move mass at the speed of light you need an infinite amount of energy. Sub light speeds are most likely going to be the solution. A system to replicate the cryogenic freezing concept might be incredibly hard but time dilation might be a part of the solution as well, but in limited scope.

    The EM drive has been thoroughly debunked at this point.
    Nasa never created prototypes either, an independent lab within Nasa created an experimental setup which reported anomalous thrust readings. The thrust was never "huge" it was absolutely microscopic, within the error margins of the experimental setup, and that is exactly what other labs determined was happening - the "thrust" was actually from the interaction of the earths magnetic field with small magnetic fields created in the wiring of the experimental setup.
    Also the "Interstellar Probe" is just a concept, NASA isn't panning anything yet, it has no funding.

Also, you should know Kurzgechortle (or should I say Kurzgesagt) is quite unscientific as well. I remember seeing them ponder the final fate of the universe, whether it would be the big crunch and bounce, big freeze or big rip or others, and they actually said at the end of the video that they would CHOOSE to believe in the big bounce because they found it the most "uplifting". That is a position which is antithetical to science itself, to believe against evidence, what you most wish to be true. So the lesson is, don't have any heroes, they will disappoint you. Sabine Hossenfelder and PBS Spacetime are the most accurate source of information as far as science channels on youtube go, I find. Followed by the science asylum. The rest all have their zealous fans but they are ignorant people. Especially ridddle. That one is the most ridiculous of them all.

The way to test this is to leave a comment and then come back not signed in to see if it is still there. If you are shadowbanned it will try to trick you into thinking you have not been censored, so you need to test while not signed in.

      I think the jury is still out, and further testing is warranted. It needs to be scaled up and tested outside of all the interference present on Earth. You are correct that it provides very little, if any, thrust. The important part is that if it works, it can provide constant thrust with a relatively low fuel mass. Ridiculously low compared to chemical rockets.

    i think StarChip might be our best proof of concept for now. 20% of speed of light to our closest solar system Alpha Centauri would take 20-30 years. It can then examine the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b, which is in the habitable zone.

    • @OverG88
      @OverG88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      StarChip is mostly a bullshit project. First of all, you need an insanely powerful laser. Gigawatts of power! An additional problem is that the efficiency of the laser would drop rapidly as StarChip moves away. Another problem is how StarChip itself would handle the insane amount of radiation. The laser would simply melt it. A collision with even a grain of sand would absolutely shred it.

    The fastest man made object is currently traveling at around 0.0000364% the speed of light (393,044 km/h).
    So, When you say that "No human-made spacecraft has ever accomplished to travel more than the speed of light"...What.
    With current knowledge about physics, nothing can travel faster than light. To travel the speed of light you must have no mass, and nothing we know of, human made, is mass-less. Also, to travel the speed of light would require infinite amount of energy, and we can not do this.
    So I am not sure who are the audience of this channel. I'd suggest getting more serious about the data you share because all and all this has good potential and presentation.

    • @amphitheremajesticon4928
      @amphitheremajesticon4928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      You are right, nothing can travel faster than light. The warp drive at the end of the video doesn't travel faster than light but warps space instead so it can travel much more distance at slower speeds.

    • @xiaoyu88
      @xiaoyu88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Michael Jay When he says it like that, it seems like it is actually accomplishable, or that something like that has been tried, but we are too much time before we can even get close to it. So yeah, it's right, but misleading.

    • @goodanytimej8688
      @goodanytimej8688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So your issue is the way he said it? All the effort put into the video and your issue is he needs to get more serious about "how he presents his data"because you dislike his phraseology? That's nit picky, in bad faith, and just overall a rediculous problem to have with the video. The video is made for young adults who want to learn. Yes there is a huge gap between the fastest speed traveled and light speed. But your basically condescending because he said what you wanted but didn't say it HOW YOU think he should. Also condescending about their wording when you have trouble putting together a sentence in a readable manner is, well it's ironic to say the least

    • @goodanytimej8688
      @goodanytimej8688 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, looking at your channel and videos, more irony abounds. Because the difference between your videos and this one is like the difference between the fastest man has traveled and light speed

    • @xiaoyu88
      @xiaoyu88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goodanytimej8688 Yes I may have been too harsh with the comment but all I say is that this things should be presented accurately.
      Because of videos like that I, and many people I know who love this subject had a lot of misconceptions about space.
      It struck me a few years ago to understand that all the milky way photos are just artist representations and not the real deal. Why? Because I saw misleading videos.
      So if you have something constructive to say, do it. If you need to personally have a go at my bass playing abilities, fuck if I care :)

    I think it might be a little late to join this race with Kurzgezagt, with how polished their videos are, this certainly makes for a interesting mirror to their content.
    Money was evidently spent, some of the animations look really nice. I think it might really be the lack of intrigue.
    There's something about the writing with this where the script seems a little distant and surface level. It feels like a watch mojo video with some pop science and trivia.
