In a span of 4 years, Vinicius Junior went from someone who was a wasteful player in the final third and called out by his own teammate on camera to now the best player in the world and probably the next Ballon Dor winner. His emergence is a prime example of how we need to show more patience when it comes to young players irrespective of how they perform. His career at Real Madrid has been up and down and it didn’t get off to a great start as he was known for being a skillful and tricky player who wasn’t great at finishing his shooting was poor he had awful decision making and it even got to a point where at the time, Karim Benzema his own teammate on camera said “don’t pass the ball to Vini, on my mothers life, he’s playing against us”, what’s happened to him since that incident has been something magical. Of late he has gone from strength to strength at Real Madrid as in back to back seasons (2021-22 and 2022-23) he has 20+ goals and 20+ assists in all competitions and last season he had 24 goals in all competitions and he was their top scorer. During this period he has led them to 2 champions league titles in 3 years and is the player with the most goals and assists in this competition since the start of the 2021-22 season and he has been involved in a G/A in every knockout stage game except for one tie as the only team that has stopped him from getting a goal contribution in the latter stages of the tournament was Chelsea. He has replaced Cristiano Ronaldo as Mr. Champions League and he has been up to task of wearing the number 7 shirt because when you wear that jersey at Real Madrid, with great power comes great responsibility. That’s insane considering the fact that he’s 23 years old and he isn’t even in his prime and when we wanna look at big games, from a champions league perspective he’s the best player in the world. There’s an argument to be made that even with the arrival of Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid, Vini should be their main man.
Right now he has the edge over other players in the Ballon Dor race because of what he did in the champions league where he won the competition as the best player and was decisive in so many big games for Real Madrid. He has been terrific for his club with the amount of trophies he’s already won at the age of 23 and he has been their best player in recent seasons and has been a game changer for them over and over again and the only thing that he has to do is translate his club form to the national team where he has really struggled with Brazil as it’s important for him to step up and be their main man during Neymar’s absence because with his injuries, they can no longer rely on him regularly. His performances have been very inconsistent and he’s come under criticism for being a systems player, “overrated, can’t perform outside of Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid, he’s carried by others can’t carry a team, worst Ballon Dor winner ever, football fell off” etc and he didn’t get off to a great start at the Copa America where he was subbed off during their game against Costa Rica when his team were chasing a goal and there was a feeling that they were only starting him because of his name, he silenced his critics against Paraguay and him scoring 2 goals and putting in a world class performance where he put the team on his back is something that strengthens his case for the Ballon Dor. Assuming he has a good tournament regardless of who ends up winning the EUROs, that would be enough for him to win the Ballon Dor whether Brazil wins the Copa America or not.
