  • When it comes to frugal living, NOT buying stuff (or finding one-time purchase, long-time use stuff) is the gold standard. Here's how my family takes a more minimalist & eco-friendly approach to some common problems.

Cast iron is the best! My son and his girlfriend recently set up house. While shopping he called and asked what the benefit of cast iron is. I told him “They last forever. No toxic coating. They give you iron. Heck of a weapon. If you take proper care they become non stick”

yepppp no replacing pans when the coating wears out, just reseason! My wife needs iron supplements anyways as well!

I have something I call my “pandemic napkins”. When the pandemic began there was that paper shortage. In anticipation I cut up a couple of old worn towels into approximately 6” squares. We used those as our napkins and still use them. Of course, we have a set of real napkins for when we have company.

Across the board same!!! No disposables, used cars, makeup is not my jam, subscriptions and convenience foods annoy me with their up-charging. I kept want to shout “BINGO” 😂

Fellow non-makeup wearer here. Never really enjoyed it; it's a lot of time and trouble. I eventually developed a sensitivity to the little I did wear. The last two times I put on makeup were both for important appointments, and that was years ago. I don't do fancy hair, either. Same reason-too much trouble, and many other things I would prefer to do. My hair is really long, and people ask me if it's a lot of work. I tell them it is practically no work at all because I don't blowdry it, curl it, style it, etc. Pretty much just brush, part, and go. (I do wash it : D ) Thank you for your videos; we are also on a frugal, getting-out-of-debt journey, and it's always good to hear others' experiences. : )

Wahoo for getting out of debt!
And I'm so happy to meet another teacher-type (assuming, based on your account name) who forgoes the makeup. I feel like aside from a few of the near-retirees I used to teach with, I was the only lady working in my school without makeup!

I would say curling at home with some rollers is a much better and cheaper way to style your hair if you want to style it.

I find that I can do makeup that looks acceptable in the morning, but an hour or so later when I catch a glimpse of my face in a mirror somehow I've turned into Bozo the Clown. Anymore my feeling is that my face is what God made it - any complaints, take it up with Him.

I don't wear makeup hardly ever either. Ex-teacher here, I didn't notice it then, but thinking back, you're right. I was the only female teacher not in makeup! I've had the same eye shadow kit the last fifteen years. I should probably throw it out, lol.

The only time I used an Amazon subscription-flea prevention medication for my cat. I treated him once a month so I would use the monthly subscription for 6 months. Then I cancel it and start it again when the weather warmed up again. It helped me to remember to treat him.

We use old bath towels to clean up messes that happens with 4 kids in our house, I do buy paper towels but it is because we have 2 puppies under 1 years old and we use them to clean up any accidents they may have in the house. Plus I don't buy tissues we use toilet paper, I don't buy dryer sheets, fabric softener, and only use 2 tablespoons of laundry detergent for a large load. I don't buy makeup because I haven't wore it in 14 years, I use reusable period pads instead of using disposable ones. I don't have house plants but I do have plants outside.

    • @Homegrown_Hillary
      @Homegrown_Hillary  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Totally agree! Esp with using only a few tablespoons of detergent for laundry. You can stretch it so much further and still get clothes clean

I don't buy houseplants either. I have a cat and so many plants are toxic for pets that I was always worried she'd get hurt and just quit. I do DIY fake plants now. Also it was ironic that while you talked about not buying make-up, I got a Sephora ad lol

I agree with you on the holiday and greeting card thing. We occasionally pick up something exceptionally cute at a thrift store, but that's rare. Greeting cards are also a rarity - if we do send one it comes from the Dollar Tree. In the regular store a card is so stupid expensive! WHY??

I hear you, "Catherine the Sienna" :). Also, I resonated with your message about makeup. Less about the texture, and more about the idea of putting on makeup before I could encounter the world...didn't sit well with me. Enter in the idea of everything I do teaches my children what is "normal", and I didn't have a good defense for makeup anymore. Thank you for your time and your channel!

I know I wouldn't have the village around so I'm just wondering how much I should save to be sure a little one is taken care of. Cast iron pans are not 'a thing' here in Oz, but I have stainless steel pans that are virtually non-stick because I polish them regularly. A little fine metal polish and a good rub - AND VIP - heat the pan well BEFORE adding oil. I'd love a cast iron pan but weight also plays a part and as I get older this becomes important! Bar soap - you can afford to buy a good quality bar because they last for ages, usually aren't THAT expensive - and it's a no brainer as a gift, so yeah, drop hints!! I NEVER buy bottled water but oh my how I love my SodaStream - to the point where I got an adaptor hose and 2.6kg gas bottle to make it far more affordable. Here in Oz when it gets hot, staying hydrated is important and bubbly water goes down a treat - I only lightly bubble it and I add various salts to turn it into mineral water - LOVE it!! Thanks-for another fun video Hillary!

I buy pre-seasoned pans (anything you find in Walmart will be like this. I like the brand Lodge). Then, I have a rhythm of 1) clean right after cooking, without waiting til the next day or soaking, 2) using mostly water and a sponge to clean, with a little soap if it’s really greasy, 3) not cooking anything super acidic in cast irons like tomato sauce, 4) using it all the time to build up more seasoning, and 5) rubbing with vegetable oil after cleaning. I’ve never had to re-season and use mine literally every day for the last four or five years!
