It's nice and informational for people about to go balls out themselves and want to be educated going into a startup channel.. cough*cough* 😘😉😇😈😈😈🤘💀🤙much love🖤🔥

      Oh and FYI the man's caped products are really nice. I got them for my face actually lol and I have no complaints. Not saying take my word for it but if your shaver dies I'd recommend it 🤓👌 I agree with not everything is added value or something anyone wants to sit through an ad for on a music channel. It may make them click off if it annoys them out of spite.

      Totally agree! The gear talk lets you get to know more about your favorite artist. So this, coupled with an entertaining persona, makes Tank stand tall in the sea of reactors out there, in my opinion.

    I am happy, that you do what you do! You guys help "my" bands Feuerschwanz, Saltatio Mortis, Majestica, Eskimo Callboy, etc. a lot to get known in the US. It is a win-win: the bands get a bigger crowd and the US people get more cool bands to listen to. And there is a chance, that they come over and do gigs in the US. Thank you very much for your effort!

  • @reneschneider4740
    @reneschneider4740 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Yo, on the topic of reactor's value. There is a difference between a 'value add' reactor and just a reactor. You (Tank) and Nik are some of the most compelling 'value add' reactors on the web (that I have seen). Tank brings a ton to video in terms of technical know-how. Straight up makes me more invested in the piece if I know something about hoops that had to be jumped through to make some of these sounds happen. And Nik, adds immense entertainment value (plus some technical stuff, but its not really his niche) with the memes and community overtones (rawrs, chunks, grrrrs etc..). Outside of this being a complementary piece, it is to say anyone who argues that reactors don't add value "you are missing a significant amount of nuance in your take".
    Rant-ish thing over, I love your guys' content. I have definitely learned about new mainstay bands in my playlists from you guys. Keep it up.
    Peace

    I came here for all gear talk, behind the scenes chat and to listen to basically you just talking to us. I've watched almost none of your reaction videos thus far. I'll get there eventually. I just want to hear what you have to say, the way you present it. You make me reminisce about my younger days as a roadie myself, a whole lifetime ago for me now. I greatly enjoy your channel.

  • @tobifunpp

    I'm over 50 and last year my husband discoverd reaction channels. Since then you are our new MTV Headbangers ball. So many new bands. New albums to buy. None of that would have happend without this channels 😄

  • @Stewie-801
    @Stewie-801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I have found so many new bands thanks to reactors like you, Nik, and Mark. I discovered Sabaton because of you. I've now spent around $250 on hoodies, sweatpants, and a few other things from them. All because of your reaction videos. I did find you from Eskimo Callboy, Hypa Hypa. But with them, I heard them on a twitch channel like a year after Hype Hypa came out. If their label/producer hadn't allowed that, I wouldn't have bought merch, Pump It CD, and now tickets to fly from NC to Las Vegas next year to see them. Some others I've found from your guys' channels are Feuerschwanz, Saltatio Mortis, Blind Channel, Nightwish and I'm sure there are more that I will find because I'm still going through your guys' older stuff. I hope more publishers realize this, come around, and let you guys monetize. They clearly can afford to let the monetizing happen and make that amount back sooooo fast. Keep kicking ass!

    • @Stewie-801
      @Stewie-801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And I've also been now showing the crap out of EC to my coworkers, getting them hooked. As well as Sabaton and the other bands. Some at least have heard of Sabaton but others not. But if any of these guys show up to NC, I got a small group now willing to go. But if ones like Sabaton show up anywhere, like EC in Vegas, I'm gonna find one of them that I can make it too. And if they then add one close to me after I book one, then I'm gonna go to two of them lol.

    Brilliant conversation, a BIG Thank You to you Tank and Nik!!!
    That YT algorithm is not in any way perfect, I'm sure you already know that. Floor Jansen did a cover of Lara Fabian's Adagio about a year ago, and YT identified it as Lara herself singing. I don't know if she got a Copyright Strike on the video, but it wouldn't surprise me if she did.
    Abstract values - That's what you are dealing with when you get the Copyright strikes, the label can see how big the financial loss will be for a song reaction that never is done. I have some experience of those abstract values, having worked in Public Transport for 43 years and the last 26 in Rail Carried Public Transport. I'm sure you know that there are accidents here and there around Rail Carried vehicles (both intentional and pure accidental), and a lot of work goes in to trying to prevent that. It's easy enough to calculate the cost of an accident, Insurance payments and Invalid pensions and all other costs around it. All sorts of Safety Measures are set up trying to prevent accidents of all kinds, but it is always very difficult to get the costs for the Safety Measures covered by the Agency responsible for them, because it's impossible to put a price tag on an accident that never happen. Somewhat the same with song reactions, what would the financial loss be for a label for a reaction that never is done?
    And that "It will be done sooner or later anyway"- kind of reasoning you get from some labels - I don't think that Lady Fortune is synced in to the YT Algorithm.
    A 5 minute guitar talk break in an Arch Enemy video - No, I can't see anything bad in that. Waiting for the video to come up. Cheers / B.

    To your genre breaking mash up thoughts around 1:03:30 - I always felt like Billie Eilish would fit in some modern / industrial metal perfectly. Although the best possible mashup would have been Michael Jackson as a Glam Metal/stadium rock vocalist. Seriously, just listen to his evil rasp and emotion in for instance 'Leave me alone' or the kind of... gospel breakdown in 'Keep the Faith' or 'They don't really care about us'. He would have ruled the scene for 101%. 🤩🤣
    Thx for that podcast a like long talks, I'd watch more of them for sure. :)

    Great talk of you two.
    To the topic of why metalheads are not too happy when their favourite band gets too much exposure:
    I think a lot of it is the fear that if they get too "big" they might get influenced by the (newer) public oppinion or labels to make their music more mainstream instread of the niche they were in before. And people want what they know even if it might get stale

    Late to the party, I just finished watching both parts. Great conversation chaps. Nice being able to take a look at some things and thoughts going on when the camera goes off.
    When you said you had twitch streams showing guitar tech work, I had no idea. I've seen a vid here on YT where you were video taping on the road with the country singer... I guess I should check out your twitch because that sounds super interesting. Or maybe repost the vod on my YT? Big Brain singer does that too. Full disclosure, I usually don't check twitch because you know it'll end up a multi hour session. I only watch Devin Townsend on twitch, I can hear him talk for hours!
    That reminds me, nice hearing you love different types of music. I had a hunch, since you tech for a country singer. If you hated that it would be hard staying motivated on the road. Actually, I take that back, I should have realized that just from watching at the wall behind you. Why you'd want to tech for Devy now also makes sense. Even if there's technical difficulties, he'd find a way to entertain the audience and not slash out to the crew. Also, he could play face melting metal one day, new age the next (by a thread)
    Anyway, I'm rambling! Great "podcast" as you called it in part 1! Thanks to Nik as well, I hopped over to his channel to subscribe. I did watch him but usually my husband and I watch him on the tv on his account, so now I used my 2 accounts to sub too. Yay!

    On gatekeeping in metal: I don't know if I just happen to get very lucky or if this is really more of a North America problem, but literally every metalhead I know (I'm Austrian) listens to other music genres as well. The biggest overlap I see, ironically, is with german Schlager for some reason lol. But generally classic pop from the 90ies and 2000s is always a banger, I've seen dudes built like trucks with braids down to their butts rock out to Spice Girls on more than one occasion. What I notice much more is a certain dismissing of other metal subgenres, and there's often quite a bit of "hate" towards bands (and fans of bands) that are very popular, like Rammstein, Nightwish etc. Or dismissing of certain bands as being "for kids" or "for old people that don't understand current metal". Again, might just be my crowd that's like that.

    Tank, I love your non-reactor content a ton. That video where you cleaned the guitar was super interesting, and would love to see you make a documentary about being a roadie with a band for a tour for example. Record things during a longer period of time, and then pick the most interesting of them. Because even when things repeat, something is always different.

    The plural of anecdote is not necessarily data, however - broadly, because of reactors/reaction channels (including but not just you Tank :) ), I have purchased ~ 20 albums? Tickets to 10-ish shows. And then probably ~ a dozen bits of merch. And I have added soooooo many bands and songs on Spotify, Bandcamp, and TH-cam. Which I realize is not nearly as significant as an actual purchase, but hopefully is contributing towards the wellbeing of the artist as well as their visibility on the platforms.

As long as your content is entertaining or educational or providing something there's always going to be a reason for someone to sit there for hours on end watching it and it was a very amazing interview. I learned so much about Nik and about TH-cam and some stuff in the music industry if you ever want to do another interview again with anyone it be amazing to see one again but don't try and limit yourself to how long it can be for I've seen podcasts that just turn into full on rants for over an hour long and well it's entertained me enough to watch lol.

He did a colab with Cory from Slipknot. He's a big Slipknot fan. That's one of the things I love about Jinjer. They incorporate so many different genres and techniques from other genres in their music to make it their own and show who influenced them. I think either Tati or the band as a whole sited Cypress Hill as an influence. That's sick!! Love this "podcast"! Listening to you two just kind of shoot the shit is fucking great content man.

In Finland there used to be a TV show that had a panel of 6 famous people doing a review of new music after watching it for the first time on the show and it was really fun to watch too, but it was cancelled even tho it did do good numbers, but I guess they were way ahead of their time with that show.

    Haha Tank, Jay-Z and Linkin Park is going kinda old school, which is really odd because I never really pictured me being old school in that sense. Numb/Encore is really great, that album was good too, and really Linkin Park has always had that sorta sound/influence because of Mike Shinoda being more on the rap side of things, another reason why I believe that mash-up worked so well. Chester being as great of a vocalist as he was really added a lot to it as well, especially for a breakthrough into liking harsher vocals.

    Thumbs up for your statement that one should also look beyond the musical horizon, and thus fitting to your statement that as a metal fan one should not only listen to or do metal: There is a rap group from Germany (Beginner) who once coined the phrase in their Song "Fäule": "Whoever does hip-hop but only listens to hip-hop is engaging in incest." (in the original, of course, it was in German: "Wer Hip-Hop macht aber nur Hip-Hop hört, betreibt Inzest."- th-cam.com/video/E4O1R-FUQv0/w-d-xo.html). This applies analogously to all styles of music. Because that's the only way to actually develop and discover new things.

    I'm commenting mid-watch, but would love to hear how playing other bands' music live on Twitch works, do you need whitelisting or permissions beforehand or do you just not save the VOD? It would get muted for the most part, right? And you'd always be risking a strike there as well. They've been working for a bit on taking down live streams cause due to playing copyrighted stuff.
    I think the dumbasses who got banned for a few hours/days recently for watching tv shows on Twitch without permission got reported and not automatically taken down though. They were big enough to have been watched by Twitch staff though too, so that might've been it and not even had to have been reported for it.

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With music, most of the time it will mute the audio in the vods to protect the streamers. Whenever I'm doing music, I also turn clipping off just to play it safe. Beyond that? Still not sure exactly how Twitch upholds strikes and copyright claims.

    What do you think about artists like Matt from Trivium and how he uses Twitch to keep his audience engaged? Do you think more artists will do the same?

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think what he and some other artists are doing on Twitch is the evolution of being a musical artist. Hans from Feuerschwanz told me in our interview that back in the day, all you had to worry about was being in a band and playing music. But nowadays with technology and how on demand everything is, you have to be a musician, a streamer, a photo editor, a video editor, and everything in between, and I totally see that. People have more contact with bands now more than any time in history, and I think what Matt is doing is a necessity for a lot of artists.

    • @fredrikfjeld1575
      @fredrikfjeld1575 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TankTheTech Great answer.
      Matt is a good example, since he is a "gamer" by heart and therefor had an interest beforehand. Other bands like Eskimo just naturally fall into bands that have both a state of mind, personality and humor that makes them succeed on the internet. I do feel bad for those bands that are trying to create a name for themselves without those tools. It will require a lot more raw talent, practice and patience to be able to reach the same hights as those more tech-savy bands. Or you need to get the right kind of fans, that spread the word or are popular in their own right. Someone in Corridor Crew recently had an Amarathe t-shirt in one of their VFX artists react. That might help Amaranthe spread their music even more.
      Thanks for your insight!

    You got a point on how metal scene deliberately decided to stay underground, as opposed to grasp again the mainstream. I don’t know, maybe we made up our world as a way to stay aside of trends, we are protecting our heritage, because it was a countersocial movement in the 70s, then brought under the glam lights, so our soul was taken. I personally feel safe in my metal bubble, and I don’t expect Beyonce sharing scenario with Sabaton.

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahahahaha. I do know exactly what you mean, but I wouldn't be opposed to opening the metal community up a bit for more people to access it.

    • @jdejota1029
      @jdejota1029 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TankTheTech Well, maybe I didn't manage to explain better, but bottomline is the Metal scene in Europe was hit hard and entered defensive mode in the early 90s, protecting the scene, and becoming a subculture. We recovered, but the not-mainstream mantra remains. I (out)lived the metal thing in the 80s 90s, and the mainstream made no favors to the heavy metal. I'm glad that slowly steady the genre is blending into other styles, even pop and synth music, but I understand why we are still reluctant to see mainstream sucess...
