      @@Kyohan137 I'm pretty sure you meant both W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington were correct - in that Dubois argued that intellectuals (based on his "Talented Tenth" argument) versus Washington's argument that tradesman/vocational skills were the best avenue to build foundational and generational wealth. Indeed - both men are correct...but yeah - Dubois v. Washington was THE classic debate of the early to mid-20th century - www.theodysseyonline.com/washington-du-bois-great-debate - "Washington Vs. Du Bois: The Great Debate" - Dubois was a northern-born Free Black who would later go on to be the first Afro-American to earn a PhD...from Harvard no less, whereas Washington was born into slavery, studied vocational skills at Hampton Institute (Virginia), and then later went on to establish and serve as president of Tuskegee Institute (Alabama). Both men had different perspectives in what were the best ways to pursue forward progress and "racial uplift" (as it was then-called at the time) for Black Americans/former slaves. Their views were based on their very different life-experiences, thus their differing perspectives.

      Me too I told my son from an early age school will never teach you about the real world, I had to teach him common sence and how to think for himself. My cousin did it best, when her kids were on there school holidays she would detox them and teach them how to pay bills, finance, think for themselves, how to run a business as she would take them on her days where she would sell at the craft Market, making there own body lotion and purfum. So yeah she would deox the dumb down school system out of them the lease chance she would get, and that's how my house is. So my 18yr old now buys and sell high end shoes and tshits and looking to start his own brand.

      I beg to differ. It's the exact opposite actually. The misconception is that piece of paper gets you the job it doesn't. In fact it gives you the tools to do for self. You have to find, copy and reconstruct the information so infact you have the tools to be self employed.

      Education does not guarantee you can be a boss. Yes you do need education. You need to know the job. But not everyone can be a boss. Don't get me wrong you can get the position. Being a boss is more than running a business or over others. You need patience, a good listener, empathy, knowing your employees limits. That is taught but talking from over 50 years as a boss . Its doesn't come from being taught. You either have it or not.

    Is a higher education worth it? YES... BUT... only if you’re going into STEM or Finance fields. If you’re studying African Americans or Art or Entrepreneurship or sociology/Psychology without going further to pursue a MSW or doctorate degree then you just wasted tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Higher Education is a Business first and a school second.

      @shaunmc013 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blk Knight that’s my point you have to play the game in order to thrive in this system on the highest level. How do you think he was able to work in two Presidential Administrations and at the Highest levels of government and receiving a huge pension from it? You’re not going to do that by promising you’re going to work hard! So he’s not right and we all know that what they are teaching in school as far as general education curriculum is bs but we also know that as a minority in this system if that’s what it’s going to take for you not to be another false statistic than you better get educated. So it’s not about the knowledge it’s about securing your economic future in this society. I’m pretty sure that the bachelors she received helped Karen get top salary in her profession when she started out as well. So unless you are an entrepreneur or inherited/ married into some millions, you better get that degree or some certification that shows you are a skilled professional. And that’s the bottom line..

      @Language and Programming Channel -
      Yes, if a degree program is properly accredited, what's taught in the Ivy League, Drool Schools, 3rd Tier, Lower Tier, and HBCU's are all the same. The only difference is the pace the information is covered, and the prestige the institution boast about awarding to a student after they graduate.
      And the accreditation just states that the accreditation board has identified the degree program to be educating it's students at least at the minimum level allowed by their standards. Folks would be surprised at the number of colleges who's degree programs are on accreditation probation and are close to loosing it's accreditation. Schools don't have to report programs that are on probation, only programs that have lost their accreditation.
      Back in the late 90's Dartmouth College (an Ivy League) lost it's accreditation for 3 degree programs. It was soon discovered those programs were on accreditation probation for 10-14 years, but since payoffs were being made towards accreditation boards, the loss of accreditations were delayed.

    As far as an Engineering degree it does. When i read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser I was surprised to find out that early fast food franchises were started by high school drop outs and they became millionaires There are some engineering feats in the past from people without degrees, but today the knowledge is so in depth its best to get it from a school. I have a Bachelor's in EET and would like to get my Masters soon. Floating around the service, I've been through 7 colleges, in pursuit of a physics degree. I didn't have any knowledge of engineering books until I went for my EET degree and had to learn everything from the computer plug to the inside microchips (yes college taught me how to hook up microchips and make electronic devices), and even programming C and microprocessors. Way back when i was primarily self studying but I realized self studying gets end results in the shop, but not on the resume.

    I only have an High School education but I always had a thirst for knowledge from the traditional ways of learning since I was a young child. I always wonder about things a child shouldn’t concerned himself with therefore I was able to SEE a lot at such a young age. I question everything and I mean everything. I didn’t take thing for face value just because SOMEONE said it to be true. My wife have a Master Degree and some student loans debts. We have improved our lives through investments and living OUR BEST LIVES. Would I discourage college? No...but I would discourage getting in debt behind it. My daughter lives with US until she graduates from college and she has her college paid for through scholarships. If you can’t get scholarships and live with parents until graduation. Then seek other methods of achieving your goals. Mines or Ours was through sound “Investments”. The key word “Sound”....

Every time I go to the hospital and I see Asians with foreign accents. What do they know that we don't? Do your research. Is it worth it to go into the humanities? No, not financially. The issue is. As a culture. We’re not using our education to START careers in MAJOR industries to compete on a grander scale economically. IF we would join forces from with those degrees in different areas to structure businesses or townships. As opposed to getting those degrees to get jobs to compete with one another. It would absolutely be worth the investment. Steve Jobs used his knowledge to CREATE an industry and compete. Not to simply work in one

    Higher Learning is not Higher Learning but it is LESSONS on how the world really works, MONEY! You pay for classes you will never need but required for your major, you have to buy books for ridiculous prices that the professor wrote and sell them back for 70 percent to 80 percent less of what you paid, and among other things, you can be screwed over when you discover one of the biggest cover ups in ALL UNIVERSITIES offered things to stay quiet but removed when you don’t! (Personal Experience) and why to this day I will not be taken to court since 1997! College is good for skill positions (doctors, engineers, etc) but only classes are needed individually for most other careers.

    Wonderful!!!!! I had a disagreement with you on another matter. But you were so on point with the answer to this subject. I quit college and I was on the honor roll at the highest level of the schools academic grading and tutoring students at the university, as well. The reason I quit going was for the reason the gentlemen stated. I was at a state school and I was told by a "white" political science teacher that we would be subjected to certain criteria of employment in the private and public sectors. Now here is the thing that was the reason that I quit. I consider myself a learned person. I like to study and find the challenges of study. This is a difference than being indoctrinated. Some need to be indoctrinated into a system. This is their survival mechanism, They need a coping mechanism for their survival. And getting that degree and job is that coping mechanism for a myriad of reasons. Grandma told them they are the first to graduate college. They were told it is the only way out, so forth and so on. But they are not being taught critical thinking. And this is paramount to the survival of the Black and Brown community. It once was called "common sense". The Bible speaks of it as Wisdom, knowledge and understanding. So we have to remember that once one becomes indoctrinated into a system or culture. They buy into the rules of it. To brainwash them back to critical thinking of community and others of your community being first is paramount in getting our people to think critically. But in this culture we are led to believe that if you have achieved a certain amount of success through your higher education. You have been elevated to a status above the lesser or have not's. Not only is this simplistic. But it has become dangerously destructive to the black community family and society as a whole. Those who think they have found success. Have abandoned the lesser of the community as failures. As I have told my children, use your mind constructively. If you find you need education for a career path go for that reason. But know who you are and where you came from and what you must do to put back into your people and family. I tell my grandson a different path. He needs to study a discipline that will benefit his people. To bring back to the community a discipline that will benefit our future and those in our communities. The reason I tell him this is because he is a video game child. He has not developed the critical thinking criteria that I learned. He has been sheltered because of the violence from our communities. So now he must learn and adhere to a discipline until he can develop that critical thinking criteria. And with patience and love from his grandpa and family. We might be able to get him there in manhood. You see a generation biblically is every 20 years. Since we sold ourselves out to integration almost 60 or more years ago. We have regressed over 3 generations. This is a lot of time to make up. And we need to get busy. However, to do this we will need help. Because the enemy has to much of a lead on us in numerous ways. So our help is going to come from a supernatural source. And that source is a faith and trust in the black messiah Yahawashi the Christ. Many may not believe it. But I have yet to see a black or brown leader who has the power to reverse or change what the enemy has done to our people.

Elders should be embraced for their experiences and knowledge of their art, be it music dance visual arts creative writing African American studies and more. I do not look to western " eyes " for. Validation. Just know the great artists of our culture , most didn't have college degrees but earn d their PhDs paying dues, hard dues on the road . All the while watching others " teach " our musics in their lofty positions in educational institutes where we are not represented. 4 Real. Where is the bridge from young to elders. Who has the knowledge ? Remember this : " Real Eyes , Realize, Real Lies.......

    The flip side of so many Black women getting degrees is they are also more in debt and will be paying that back the majority of their life. I graduated from college but was on a full athletic scholarship so I came out with no debt. However after 13 years in corporate America I left and got into the electrical trade through a union apprenticeship. Best move I could have ever made. Many white professors and educators are both uncomfortable and NOT truly knowledgeable in African and Afro-American studies - what is mostly taught is the "sanitized" and watered-down version of African and Black history. Does anyone honestly think Non-Black educators have true incentive to teach truthful, correct, and unmodified versions of Black history when so much of European colonial and imperialist, along with U.S. colonial, settler, and their descendants' histories are glaring examples of genocide, rape, murder, centuries of chattel slavery under tortuous and inhumane conditions, legalized Jim Crow segregation/American apartheid, open racism, inequality, and discrimination...along with racist vigilante intimidation, violence, and murder, etc., etc.? It's a very long list of European and U.S. atrocities against Africans, African slaves, Free Blacks, former slaves, and their descendants (i.e. - Black Americans). It makes sense they'd be uncomfortable and willingly downplay African and Black American history...if they could even face the truth of their ancestors' behavior.

    the caller's theory MAY have some weight. the new push (check out the testing ground in FL) is setting kids on a college versus vocational track. there are FIVE diploma types kids can receive from the SAME high school. you have your standard, vocational, IB and then two more (I think one is stem based and the other something like AP). there is an associated pipeline for these degrees but if I remember if u chose vocational, you have not met the minimal standards for admittance to a 4year college/university. so graduate at 18 and not know your career path and be prepared to pay for college ready courses in community college.
    when I hear the caller speak, it makes me think of those degree offerings and the long term financial implications for kids who are unsure of career paths at 18 (like most). when they DO figure it out, the challenges will be far greater and serve as a deterrent?

      Soul Glow, the unfortunate reality in urban public school systems is that particular ethnicities are ill equipped, lack motivation, limited family support with the pursuit of Higher Education, intimidated by venturing towards changing their environment, zero connection with School Counselors, negative peer pressure, don't think beyond their present survival, no outlined goals, few positive examples of adult family members obtaining anything beyond High School, attitude and delusional belief that Reality Television is the ticket to stardom, local success in High School Sports will open doors for signing a contract in professional sports, hasn't been introduced to business and mentors who can provide guidance and direction to prosperous careers. The mindset for these misguided and confused modern-day young people is that someone owes them something. I hate the college is not worth bullshit because, you make more money on average going to college. Most people who say college is not worth it went to college! Where are all the people who did not go to college saying college is not worth it? A degree is worthwhile when it does not leave you with crippling debt , provides you a higher wage than someone in your field with out a degree and allows you to create connections that can help you get a job. Most of the famous college dropouts used the connections they made IN COLLEGE to help them when they dropped out(Microsoft, Paypal, Facebook & etc.) . School prestige is overrated because, if your in a top 100 school your teacher went to a top 50 school. Their is hardly any wage difference between the top 100 schools but, a massive tuition differences. Second off if Karen Hunter thinks she could of got any of her teaching jobs at colleges with out a college degree she is crazy!

    My concern has been the focus on attaining a degree as an automatic creator of successful outcomes. I worry that a lot of effort for our young people has been on 'going to college' as a destination for their success when the conversation should be about whether college is or is not necessary for a student's LIFE mission. If you are intending to be a lawyer, teacher, engineer, doctor, vet, or dentist, then college is a necessary part of the process. However, if going to college is not a part of a greater educational process, every other question should be focused on whether going to college would allow for an enriched educational experience that can be built upon. How often do we talk to our kids about the importance of relationship building in college, or mentorship opportunities in college or even asking if college is necessary for what they want to do.
    I could say so much more but I think we should actively talk to our kids about 1) Do you want to rule the world? 2) if the answer is yes, HOW do you rule it? and 3) If going to college is a necessary part of the process?

    The majority of industries now require some completion of Higher Education today. The immigrants that have arrived are enrolled in Community Colleges now more than the African American Decedents of Slavery now. Becoming bilingual is not emphasized and pursued enough by AMERIKKKA'S urban and rural youth. College is called a Scam now because the young and uneducated modern-day plantation commodities masquerading as free independent thinkers have not figured out how to succeed and play the game. One does not have to accrue excessive student debt today. It is a trap and many think and believe that they are to live a lucrative lifestyle as a poor college student. How about investing time in researching and applying for scholarships, seeking out paid internships, working part-time jobs and saving money to help minimize debt. What ever happened to common sense in AMERIKKKA? Everyone is not born or blessed with a gold spoon to eat with in attending college. Past time to grow up young people. No one owes you anything. Prepare to get yours and you will learn to appreciate life. Pray and ask Yahweh for strength, guidance, direction, protection and finances in order to achieve your Higher Education goals. Struggle is part of life. How does one expect to learn if you have not experienced some type of hardships? Produce instead of always consuming. Those who produce make the rules. Study China. Every nation will eventually dance to their tune.

It’s important to remove yourself and your achievements away from the conversation and look at how many other people go and are struggling. The fact that these institutions offer you degrees in subject matters that won’t give you a return on investment tells you that it’s a scam. I’m not saying don’t go to college, I went to college. We need to start having return on investment conversations so that we can make informed decisions about what institutions we should go to and what majors we should be majoring in. I’m happy for your success tho prince
