I was at ILM when they were wrapping this set-up, and it was pretty cool to see this effect in person. A true magicians trick! I was also impressed with the 35mm still camera shooting the mine car sequence. Old school Innovation!
Doing this effect with modern CG would probably take about a third of the time and effort, but what you've done here is 1000% more satisfying and impressive. Love it!
Of all the illusions in that movie, this was the most awesome. It literally blew my mind. This goes to show that the movies of the 70s and 80s were the best. BTW, you did an incredible job using off the shelf parts and cameras. Well done.
This is seriously impressive! You achieved an effect done in 1989 with just your computer and a few equipment at home. I wanna say, where getting to the point where someone at home with a YT channel can pull off better effects than a major studio with a 200 million dollar budget!
Very impressive! Well done. I think this shot in the movie blew everyone’s minds from the throwing of the dust particles onto the “invisible” bridge to Indy stepping across it. Great duplication of that _trompe-l'œil_ effect.
@1:06 they used a motion control rig, that can scale the motion, so that the motion of the shot of Harrison Ford matches the motion of the miniature bridge.
I love your work Steve, you have been my help to make the last video that I have published on my channel! A video within the Guardians of the Galaxy movie that I would love to hear from you.
89, but yeah. The whole photochemical process for combining actual physical film must've been exhausting on its own! Truly genius people at the top of their game - again and again 👏
Seriously! Even with modern technology, that single shot was very pain staking and time consuming, I can't imagine having to do that on film and without modern computer programs.
*1989 The tedious part is the motion control photography and part with the optical printer(luckily they were slowly phased out at the time when I started doing VFX).
Works in the cinema but they proved that it wouldn’t have fooled Indy (wasn’t myth busters, but some similar show). Having two eyes on it your brain can work out the perspective difference. Obviously it works in film as you’re viewing a ‘flat image’. Not taking anything away from the scene (or then while film for that matter), it’s awesome
It's really great experiment to get the experience. One of the best illusion or perspective to reveal the scene and in little magic. The great scene and ideas to recreate as new in your own way of storytelling. Keep learning and developing in yourself and others for viewers.
@JustMy Thought Yeah, I see your point. I just always assumed that the illusion was "intended" to be seen at Indy's eye level, and once he took a few steps "on faith" that the bridge would be visible. The idea being that it was not visible _until after_ he took the first steps. The fact that the perspective has to be different for the camera is just so that we as viewers can also be tricked by the illusion, if that makes sense. At least that's how I always understood it.
Wow, cudos to you for doing it the hard way. I would have stollen a rock wall photo in 2D then used photoshop with the distort feature to cut and past the section of the bridge face from the original rock face onto the bridge face.
Another awesome video! I love how you go after existing effects and reproduce them... with amazing results. It goes to show any film maker that these effects ARE possible, even on a budget! Thanks, Steve!
Keep up the great work my searches keep coming back to your videos so you definitely have your finger on the pulse helping us all with these tutorials.
Just out of curiosity: Since you move on a X axis, couldn't you have calculated the new scale (considering also the change in focal length) to get the exact values?
1:50 for this specific shot you could also stand on a motorized turntable/lazy susan without moving the camera so you could fake a much wider camera movement. Cool video as always 👍
Nicely done! I think the element with Harrison Ford was shot with the camera on a crane arm. There appears to be a slight arcing forward and back as the camera travels laterally.
Amazing work. Interestingly enough, the "solution" to the effect, reminds me of modern day people saying " how can NASA lose info on space travel, from the 60s and 70s?" Quite similar to this, the info was there, but lost through time, and modern practices have to recreate it through our modern tech, on something that was documented, but lost/misplaced, or have to get to the mental notes of people who did it. Really amazing work!
If you have a dslr turn the lights of in the room, and get a high powered torch and put in in the viewfinder, it will project the light onto the area, you can with chalk mark off your limit, then go to the finish position and do the same, at the finish point you can put in a camera slide transparency in the view finder make sure its gridded then you mark off the grid in chalk on the model and use this to line up the painted areas. I am a matte painter. ;)
This brings me to a question I got since a long time ago: Is there any addon/plugin or native function/effect in AfterEffects for synchronize/time remap footage by time/motion tracking? For example in this scene you motion track the greenscreen footage by two blue markers on the greenscreen and a markerless motion tracking of the bridge and then my mentioned effect will do the time syncronizing for you? This would also be very useful for syncronizing two pans in a fade transition!
I love that you did this with practical effects! Though if you dabble in Blender at all, I imagine projecting the image of a rock face on very simple geometry like that bridge would give you a seamless version. You could even put the actor into that 3-D space. But anyway, I really like this classic technique you used.
Fantastic job I do the same type of work that you do and I understand how difficult and how many hours you put into that but you did absolutely a fantastic job
I was making movies in the 80s and studied all of these fx shots back then, it always bugged me that his feet weren't tracked very well though. You did an amazing job recreating this! It was well thought out and well explained. Cheers, you have a new sub from me!
I would love to see a video about the use of the "Peppers ghost " illusion in Tim Burtons Nightmare before Christmas. It allowed transparent ghosts to be filmed in camera for stop motion animation. I have always wondered how that was set up. You are just the man to figure it out.
There are several videos on TH-cam about Disney's Haunted Mansion rides that explain the Pepper's Ghost effect, used in the Ballroom scene; they don't show how to use it in your own film, but they're a good place to start, and you may even be able to figure the rest out on your own.
@@willmfrank Thanks , you are correct , the ballroom in the Haunted mansion is a huge peppers ghost using one of the largest single pieces of glass in existence. I still wonder how it was set up "in camera" for Nightmare before Christmas. any ideas?
@@wonderrob3225 Nothing certain; only speculation: I imagine that the two animation stages were side by side, the ghost stage being just out of camera view, with the glass oriented vertically. It would have been quite similar to the arrangement used in front projection, except that the image would be directed toward the camera, rather than toward the screen.
Hey, Congrats for your help towards your community ;) Didn't look deeply in the bunch of comments, but I'm sure some have already told you and also sure you knew yet that dropping AE would help you a lot hahaha ;) For this and several other tricks in your videos... Man, just try spending a few hours on Fusion, doors will open widely ;) (or Nuke if you prefer, but forget about a layer app for anything else than editing or grading) Love your funny tone and your pep though !
Wow! Amazing work. Kudos my friend. One thing you didn't mention was how long you took to complete this work of art from beginning to end of the editing work. I'm in the process of making a puppet music video and the amount of steps to do the entire band, lighting, camera locations, spotting, puppeteering editing... I'm out of breath thinking about the amount of work and time to do this. I'm already at 3 years of getting the stage made buying lighting. and so much more. And all this with no help cause my wife and son think I've lost it like the guy making a mountain in the middle of his living room in Close Encounters. Nice job!
This is incredible man! You really nailed this effect!
Many thanks!

Why did they make it so easy???

Of all the illusions in that movie, this was the most awesome. It literally blew my mind. This goes to show that the movies of the 70s and 80s were the best. BTW, you did an incredible job using off the shelf parts and cameras. Well done.

You’re a freaking genius! You always get the effect you want with limited resources!
Shadows with puppets? Amazing.
I like hearing about the old methods almost as much as seeing your recreations.

Hats off to you for actually painting all of that and for achieving the same effect with home studio equipment.
Thumbs up for the shear amount of effort you put in alone. Awesome work as always

One of the best scene of The movie with the drinking from cups scene.
I thought it was stupid, because it only works in movies with a controlled camera. Indiana Jones should have been able to see the bridge easily.
