  • Finally...! A BIG tick from the ringing bucket list; a ring at the Cathedraland Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury. The Cathedral holds a glorious 34cwt Whitechapel ring of twelve in C#, all cast in 1981. There is also a 62cwt bourdon called Great Dunstan. Ringing here features Erin Cinques.

The front 10 are an amazing and delightful to ring.

They've recorded well here, and probably sound better here than in any other videos. Nice and extremely clear for a twelve!

They are indeed very clear and good! I'm very honoured to be a ringer here now. They're fantastic bells!

Why is the trap door in the ceiling open? Is it to let sound in the ringing room to be heard more clearly?

Yep that’s exactly why. Beforehand they were apparently very mushy to hear in the ringing chamber as the bells are on two levels. But the acoustics have been tweaked and they’re massively better.

Does the tenor have a wooden-shafted clapper? it sounds better than when I last rang there.

Unfortunately not, no. If it did it would bring out the sound more. I think what's brought it out here is because the acoustics have been made much better.

Someone either doesn't know how to use a camera, or is in this American 'privacy' trip of social isolation by hiding the fellow ringers. This is NOT the goal of the ringing community -- privacy! There is a time in life for privacy JUST AS there is ALSO a time in life for PUBLIC social ability and interaction. Bellringing is the LATTER! COMMUNITY, NOT ISOLATION! It is a worldwide community and as there is a SHORTAGE of ringers, social action is paramount for this exercis survival! I have seen countless videos on ringing (as well partaken in the exercise as well) and there really is no room for this hiding people and fellow ringers.
Either that you are not watching what you video, you have to point the camera as to include the action not have the camera almost pointing to the ceiling. Many people taking videos thinking it is 'impolite' to show other people. This is dogma as to promote social isolation and fear (agoraphobia).
We are usually trying to recruit new ringers and it is paramount to show how it is done. Can't do that if most of the action is hidden! From my experience the vast majority of my ringing peers LOVE to be shown and take great PRIDE in the accomplishments of good ringing. Most would WANT to be seen! Not hidden. Thank you!
