Are there any free online classes out there that offer live instruction via zoom on how to use GEDMatch? Also are there any plans to update this video? The current website version doesn't match the format of this video.
I have a cousin that I have matched to by DNA. We are second to third cousins and we are connected through someone on my fathers side to someone on her mothers side. what is the best way to use GEDmatch to determine our actual connection?
Centimorgans by largest or total seem to be the main measure but what about "shared segments found for this comparison or "Pct SNPs are full identical, or Total Half-Match segments (HIR)"? Also what about tick boxes "Show only Full-Match (FIR) segments. Prevent Hard Breaks (default is to create hard breaks when distance between SNP's exceeds 500,000 base positions):"?
Stumbled across this and wow, lots of information to ingest. Hoping that this tool can help me digest some data I have from AncestryDNA. I'm hoping this can help determine between a potential half-sibling or niece/nephew, wince the number of shared cM between those groups is similar.
Cathy C Asked: On Ancestry, should I put on my deceased Aunt’s profile her Gedmatch kit number so matches on Ancestry will know? That would be a great idea!
I just uploaded my ancestry results to gedmatch. I really don't know what I'm doing and I am trying to learn, but u don't understand a lot of this? Also how do I find my haplop group? And info like that?
The first thing to do with GEDmatch and DNA is to 1. Ignore the haplogroup because it doesn't help you build our your family tree in any meaningful way. 2. Be sure you understand how to build a famiy tree based on records th-cam.com/video/Fx2Tff-R-yI/w-d-xo.html and genetics th-cam.com/play/PLcVx-GSCjcdmsw25mbI-wJin_9_9QQUzI.html 3. When you understand these concepts, then review the GEDmatch tools in the order I explained in this video. I know genetic genealogy is daunting. Take your time. Keep learning and you'll get the hang of this in no time.
So in order to be able to group my matches with my maternal or paternal side,I have to already know one of them? The only person I know on GEDmatch is my brother. The next closest relative is a 3rd cousin. Is there a way around this?
If you know which line your 3rd cousin belongs to, that should help you, at least with some of your DNA matches. My wife has the same problem. She will actually start with the Leeds Chart to cluster her matches and then work to see if she can figure out that group. You just need to find one connection to start things rolling. And keep working different angles until you get that connection point. th-cam.com/video/-74LJyjqo9c/w-d-xo.html
can you still do this if you do not know who your parents are i am adopted.one of my girls have myasthenia and the other has something going on with her eyes. i was born in denver colorado but it also has wyoming on it do you think this will help me
You would find siblings and parents the same way you would if you weren't adopted. You would start with a Leeds Chart (which isn't a GEDmatch tool), and then start trying to figure out who is related to whom. You'd also go through the order of tools listed here. However, I think you're putting the cart before the horse. Have you watched this series of how to research when you are seeking biological relatives? th-cam.com/play/PLcVx-GSCjcdk1GsAs9NfLWKvACcjE3Afg.html
We are helping my cousin (adoptee) find his father. His mother was my mom sister. He found us on ancestry after she passed. Family said that the father was her Portuguese boyfriend, his DNA says otherwise. On ancestry 2 cousins from his father side have not answered our email. We are stuck in the search. Currently waiting for 23&me to process DnA and going in that direction. Please advice. Thank you Im so glad you created these series of videos to educate people like us.
Your next step would be to attempt to do living person research for the matches who won't respond. Here's an article that might be useful www.familytreemagazine.com/strategies/tracking-down-living-relatives/ Once you figure out who they might be, see if you can build their family tree and then use it in your research. Sometimes you don't need a match to respond to use them in your research.
I am specifically looking for matches to my mother's English paternal side. I have both MtDna and ADna at gedmatch. What is the best One to One search to use: Autosomal or X-match, and which kit to use? I seem to get only paternal matches no matter which I've tried. Thank you.
I would recommend you stick with the Autosomal matches as few people have the x-DNA in their kits. With regard to finding your maternal line, there are several factors at play. 1. Your maternal DNA matches might not have added their DNA to GEDmatch. 2. Your maternal DNA matches have not taken DNA at all. 3. There are not enough descendants on your DNA line to take a test. I discussed the problem of small families in this video th-cam.com/video/pJDjHg13QgI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks. Now I'd like to know would the Y feature on One-to-Many at Gedmatch be of help on my maternal male cousins' kits be if any value to me? With my small maternal dna pool in this line I'm clutching at straws. 26 in my generation, 8 in my mothers, her father an only child, his father the only male and 1 sister who had children: so a gene pool of only 37. I realize the difficulty I am facing but willing to try anything. I am at Ancestry, MyH, Gedmatch, FtDNA and soon to be 23&Me. French Canadian tree demanded no DNA as records were so well kept and informative. LOL Thanks for even looking at this. Fran
Super helpful! Maybe I missed this, but what do I do with this information to find out how a match and I are related (3rd cousin once removed, etc.)? Thank you.
Jim D asks: I have learned a lot with all your GedMatch videos. I have never seen mother and son DNA matches discussed. At Family Tree DNA I am helping a friend. FTDNA has they match 3760cM. This does not make sense as he should have his DNA from each parent. And if they match almost exactly, what is the value of having her tested other than helping identify her ancestry and cousins. Thank you for explaining this.
When you key in that cM into the website tool dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4 You'll see that 3760 is just above the parent/child threshold. It's possible that the child's parents are related to each other so that they have more DNA to share with the child.
Can Explain or give us an example. I try the tool "Are your parents related" And it show me some graphic with red and some green... what those graphic means !!! Are they related or not ! you don't explain it in the video :(
Completely used the Are Your Parents Related tool as soon as I got on GEDmatch since there are Sawyers on both my paternal and my maternal side. (allegedly -- now questioning that name on my Mom's side, since I haven't found any matches or matches of matches on that side.)
I’ve been trying to make sense out of what pops up for me. I’m getting 30% Neolithic When using 11k . Isn’t that a large percentage considering it’s more of an ancient DNA?
What tools should you use if you don't have the DNA of neither parent. My husband doesn't know who his father is he found out that he was adopted at 70 years old and his mother wouldn't tell him who his father was.
Suggest you try a Y37 DNA test with FTDNA. I used this to prove my great grandfather changed his surname to Thomas - from the paternal line name of Styles. The test will not identify your husband's father, but it will likely point you in the right direction. If you can identify the correct surname to research, it will save a huge amount of time. Once you have the correct surname you can focus in through the autosomal tests on Gedmatch. Good luck.
My wife doesn't have her parent's DNA either. I would still use the tools in this same order. There are just some you'll skip (like are my parents related?). Be sure to check out my play list about adoptee research th-cam.com/play/PLcVx-GSCjcdk1GsAs9NfLWKvACcjE3Afg.html
I have a video about how endogamy can increase the chances of false matches th-cam.com/video/ppjYzFVYH40/w-d-xo.html After that, i recommend that you follow Leah Larkin. She's my go-to person on this topic. thednageek.com/about/
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Just watched it. We have endogamy in South Africa and I have observed those little pieces like confetti of DNA in some of my matches. But we have something different. For our population most of the time a particular name has only one progenitor. So e.g..If I see a particular family name 90% of the time I can trace that name all the,way back to the original progenitor. My solution to the aggravating mess is once I am at 5th grandparent I don't bother. Because at that point I start sharing a ridiculous amount of grandparents and I lose patience. :)
No. You need both parents to use that tool. You're in the camp with my wife - both of her parents were deceased before these tests became available. So she can't use it at all.
I think it would only capture about 2nd to 3rd cousins, further back in time it may not show on your DNA. Edit: The result does not show you the estimate about the relationship of your parents, it only says: "This analysis indicates that your parents are probably related within the last several generations."
Another lovely day on Orlando. I’m waiting on a call from the vet. Dog needed a procedure this morning and hoping it will fix her issues for good. Hopefully he won’t ‘t call in the middle of today’s video. It was a minor procedure that required sedation.
Zima is a little better. It was an anal gland removal, so a tough procedure to recover from. It will be quite some time before she is fully recovered. She gets her stitches out next week.
Actually I will just ask it here and perhaps You can direct me if there is a better place in the future. Recently watched your video "are You related to all those matches" and Andy said that population segments can be as large as thirty centimorgans in rare cases. I have a segment that seems likely from an Irish great-grandmother, but I share it as a triangulated segment with maybe twenty people, a number in Ireland. Also, the segment appears to possibly connected with another group of matches later on the same chromosome, also with some of the people located in Ireland. The connected segment is 60 or more centimorgans long. My question is, what kind of segment is this likely to be? Since it is with a large number of people as a triangulated match, around 30 centimorgans, and others in Ireland show up around 30 later on the segment, could this be a population segment or more recent ancestor?
Either or both. Ireland has a rather small mostly homogenous population so there is the possibility that you could have even larger population level segments.
Just found your channel and I am really enjoying your content, been listening as I clean for the last 2 hours, but that terrible noise at the beginning of the video made me startle so hard! Hoping I don’t find it in many more of your videos. 😅

We adopted five boys. Three of whom I believe I am related to. Their grandmother stated that she was always taught that my great-grandfather was her cousin. I had the oldest tested on Ancestry. No match between me or any of my close relatives. Now, he did match a 5th cousin on my mother's side. He also matched a person who might be related to my husband, but no match to my bio daughter. I ran the one-to-one autosomal tool. It showed a low match at 3.8 on some segments. Does this mean that we are in fact distant cousins or we have some general DNA markers because we are both African-Americans?
It's entirely possible. I want to be sure you're following all the adoptee research steps before tackling the "Am I related to him?" question. Thanks for the feedback. I'll take this into consideration. However, have you looked at the description box? You'll find links to the tools I've discussed on this channel. That is your best bet.
Actually, I have videos for each component separately. I had people ask again and again what order to use the tools. That's the purpose of this video. The links are in the Show Notes. The Show Notes link is in the description. Didn't I say that in the video? I thought I had. I'll try to be more clear next time.
If you are from an endogamous family this does not work. You will be related to cousins on both sides several times especially if your ancestors married neighbors.
I have discussed endogamy and the increase of false matches. th-cam.com/video/ppjYzFVYH40/w-d-xo.html I recommend folks with endogamy become very familiar with the research recommendations made by Lean Larkin thednageek.com/about/

I wish I knew what all this meant. lol I just see bars with pretty colors. HAHA
You're not the only one. I will be doing more videos about GEDmatch this next year. Be sure to ask lots of questions.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Awesome. Thanks. I'll make sure I'm subscribed. :)
I'm more lost than I was before I watched this. Please use screen shots to help explain what you mean.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll take this into consideration. However, have you looked at the description box? You'll find links to the tools I've discussed on this channel. That is your best bet.
Jesus, had the volume all the way up and that static sound almost blew my ears out, lol.
Did anyone else have this problem? You're the first to express this thought.
Maybe do videos on each component separately instead of going through each component....
I have discussed endogamy and the increase of false matches. th-cam.com/video/ppjYzFVYH40/w-d-xo.html
I recommend folks with endogamy become very familiar with the research recommendations made by Lean Larkin thednageek.com/about/
A very helpful video; however, the static sound between screens is aggravating. Please quit adding a static sound in your videos. Thanks!
I don't try to add static sounds in our videos. You're the first to mention it. I'll keep it in mind when I edit future videos.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics That's very kind of you! I really enjoy your videos. Best Regards, Colleen
I just wanted to donate my DNA in hopes that it might help solve some cold cases. This was not helpful at all!
At the end of the video, your voice did not sync with the movement of your mouth.
Thanks for pointing that out. We'll try to be more careful in the future.
Most of my results lead to the Bamoun and the Fulani People.
Cool. Are you finding DNA relatives?
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics. Yes I am.
Gedmatch seems clunky & limited of free tools.
GEDmatch is not for the new genetic genealogy. That's true.
made my "journey" worse
How does knowing the order I would recommend you use GEDmatch tools make your journey worse? I'm tempted to think a comment like this borders on trolling. If not, then please explain.
