Thank you, I watched this as I did it and it worked out fine with each step. Might be worth mentioning that you get a zip file from Ancestry(the one I used) and I did wonder if it had to be unzipped but nope it was fine. Also once you hit upload theres no indicator that you have started the download, you just have to watch and wait (and not keep tapping the download button lol!) Apart from that its a good helpful run through.
Hello Andrew, My daughter, adopted from China, asked me to upload her 23-and-me DNA kit on GED Match, which I have done. Now, once in a while we get a message for a possible match. I'm lost on how to interprete the information or even what to look for. Do you have any videos more specific on adoption research and interpretation ? Thank you in advance.
Its NOT letting me register ... after getting the email confirmation number, I input it and all I got was a blank white page. I tried again and still get the same thing Whats wrong?
Hello Andrew. I learned of gedmatch watching the movie 'one child nation'. In the past I've had my DNA tested by Ancestry, which you mention as upload option, but you don't say anything of how to get that to upload to gedmatch. Also, do you have dna kits available also? Ok so I figured out the getting file from Ancestry & uploaded it. Great. Now, do you guys have Kits available? Thanks again! I'm hoping to find a relative I've been looking for since 1981. Wish me luck!
I just uploaded my kit data before I watched this. I am amazed the ethnicity (admixture) seems so different from what came up on Ancestry, including other parts of the world I would not have expected. It makes me wonder if they have someone else's data with my file number. Ancestry had England/NW Europe, other UK and N Europe places... this also has southern Europe and even Asian, African and Middle Eastern, but maybe this is all just because Gedmatch has a much wider database of DNA from all over the world to compare mine with. A very suprising result already. I wonder if Ancestry might have sent me someone else's raw DNA data file by mistake? Or if Gedmatch have mixed up my file with someone else's? Can such mistakes happen?
No. Your RAW Data from Ancestry is your Raw Data. The platforms all have different reference populations to derive the ethnicity results from. Watch this video to learn more. th-cam.com/video/ScZtHuU78n4/w-d-xo.html
Gedmatch is so vast that it’s super confusing. I’m happy to at least find this and hope I can make some sense of my admixtures. Ancestry is constantly changing adding and taking away from what they said was my mixture, as well it does not credit my Native American ancestry anymore which is super annoying, so this is all frustrating business for me and I hope I can finally find some answers about who I am. :(
Yes. Gedmatch is confusing. I hope you'll stop focusing on the admixture and working on building a family tree based on your DNA matches. It's challenging work but doesn't change as much as the DNA ethnicity percentages.
TY Andy. Based on what you are saying about uploading a 2nd kit that is yourself, it will match itself? So I'm wondering, if I create two profiles and upload my Ancestry kit to one and my 23andMe to the other, will that match those kits as identical twins?
Yes, you can load multiple tests. I have done myself, my mother and my sister. They are all loaded on my account. Each one will receive it's own unique test number.
I have a question: What happens if two different people (using different GED match accounts) upload the same data (the same kit file)? How is that handled by GEDmatch? Does it cause problems?
thank you for this! My FTDNA had 3 raw data downloads available.....37 autosomal, 37 x chromosome, or 37 concatenated. What do those mean? So far I just uploaded 37 autosomal to Gedmatch---- I found a family member in FTDNA who seems to know what she's doing and told me to upload to Gedmatch so that's all I've done so far. Thank you!
Since you're new to GEDmatch, I advise you to explore these videos. I described them in a blog post but they should help you out. There is a link about downloading your DNA and then uploading it to GEDmatch.
That depends on the questions you're asking. GEDmatch has a database from people who've never tested on MyHeritage but have voluntarily migrated their DNA results from their testing company (such as 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, Living DNA, Ancestry). Finding genetic cousins across multiple platforms is great, but the size of the GEDmatch database is not the sum total of everyone who has tested. You'll miss out on matching folks who have not chosen to migrate their results there. With that in mind, it's difficult to answer whether MyHeritage or GEDmatch is more accurate as it all depends on who you're hoping to match and whether they're in the same database.
Do you happen to know if there is a way a person can get ahold of dna from when a hospital checks patients. Like for example. My sister, or dad are now deceased, is there a potal, that has the link for the dna?
I could still follow the instructions, but they have changed their website and have just implemented new log-in/security functions - as of 6/13/24 with Two Part Identification coming soon as well.

I an trying to figure out what order to watch them in. They don't have any numbering scheme for order to watch them. Any suggestions?
This is a brilliant video thank you. However I have tried to load my mother's DNA results from Ancestry, and the site indicates that it is: "2 - Likely Duplicate - may need to be deleted". I have checked that I have not loaded a duplicate file, and I have checked the data to make sure that there are differences between my DNA and my mother's. How can I make use of the file please?
I have been trying to comprehend Gedmatch for two weeks. I have my Ancestry results but haven't succeeded getting through to Gedmatch. The accent of the man on the video is impossible to understand so it is useless. I read that there's something in the top RH corner to click on but I can't find it. If someone could spell out to me what steps I should take, I would appreciate it very much.
So what's next - I got a 10 page report with all kinds of numbers and names and haven't a clue what they mean. Is there somewhere that I can learn about this - that assumes I know nothing (because I don't).
Your RAW DNA doesn't change. So no, don't reupload that. You can reupload a GEDcom file (the family tree) as you add more lines to your file (or correct others).
I want to upload my DNA to GEDmatch but I am stuck on the last stage of doing this. A zip file has arrived and I have no further instructions to take it furthe I am told by MYHeritage instructions to follow the instructions on the second tab but there doesn't appear to be anything else that arrive with the raw DNA. Help!
Hi, when trying to down load the raw files from My Heritage, I agree that it is only for personal use. Am I not breaking any rules if I up loaded them in GEDmatch?
I have done the DnA by Ancestry and get messages almost everyday of possible related people, How does what I get from Ancestry differ from what I would get from GEDmatch?
I can kinda answer that for you. Your matches from Ancestory will only show you matches of any potential relatives who ALSO tested through Ancestory. You may have other relatives who tested through some of the other testing companies like 23 and me, ftdna (Family tree DNA), MyHeritage, etc. Gedmatch.com is kind of like...a warehouse. It accepts the DNA data from most other testing companies and allows you to see matches from those other companies. For example, let's say you have a 3rd cousin who used 23 and me to test their DnA, if both of you only keep your DNA on your sites (you on Ancestory, them on 23 and me) the two of you wouldn't show up as a match on either of those sites. If however you both upload your DNA data into Gedmatch, then you will show as matched in the Gedmatch one to many comparison. ...Also, Gedmatch gets pretty...nerdy...with the data and some hobbyists and experts have made specific reports that can analyse your DNA and give you sometimes more specific information on specific heritage locations and populations you match with that Ancestory might not get that specific with...but that takes a bit of research to know what to select to see those results. Those are the "Admixture" reports...but that's a whole other video. Long story short- uploading your DNA data to Gedmatch is worth the time and effort. It's an awesome tool
Great Question. GEDmatch helps you 1) Compare your DNA with people who didn't test with Ancestry but transferred their DNA to GEDmatch. 2) Has better research tools than Ancestry (if you're willing to spend the time learning them.)
Hello, I'm having trouble finding my GEDkit number. Every time I give someone my numbers they keep telling me it's wrong, I don't seem to find any matches. Thank you
Lynn is correct. You have to take a DNA test to use GEDmatch. You should also build your family tree using genealogical techniques that Devon teaches th-cam.com/video/Fx2Tff-R-yI/w-d-xo.html
Hello Andrew! I have a question, I am Argentinian and I have tested my DNA with MyHeritage. The results were completely wrong, it said I was 0% Iberian even when I know that 2 of my great grandparents were born in Galicia, Spain and the rest of my great grandparents were Italian born except for my paternal side of my father's family who were born in this country (and I don't have many information about them). According to MyHeritage I'm 60% European when I clearly look Baskid and typical mediterranean, brown hair and white skin. I tried Gedmatch and got more accurate results, 75% European. What I can't understand is the other percentage when I am the 3rd generation of immigrants, who before and after settling here looked white without any native/mongoloid phenotype. What could be the answer to this?
The reference populations for your particular heritage may not be expansive enough. Usually when this happens you see generic groups like "European" as opposed to more specific like "Iberian".
The terms and conditions state that you want to go through and change living persons to "LIVING" or some other term before downloading a gedcom file and uploading it to gedmatch. Apparently, gedcom doesn't sort that for you.
GEDmatch does it's best to mark living people as private but they really put the onus on users to do that before uploading. I would recommend deleting your family tree and then reuploading. Devon and I have a video explaining how to do the privatization before you upload. th-cam.com/video/2YG0hPwVxC4/w-d-xo.html
What is the file that is uploaded ? It is text file so I can not be .bam . It is using GRCh37 so I cannot be fasta. Is it a sam file ? A vcf file ? What might be ? Raw data is a very generic description.
My cousin gave me my kit number from GED and told me all I need to was open a gedmatch account and input the number. But I'm not given that option anywhere.
It is on the home page after you sign in. There will be a list of kits that you uploaded (if you only uploaded one, then it should be the only one listed).
I have a smartphone but no computer. I am not sure I ever downloaded anything but the apps from 23 & me and Ancestry DNA. So how do you get any file if you aren't sure where any of it is?
Your smartphone will have a download file. While it is downloading it should show you a title for the file. Then when you are at the GEDMATCH area to upload you will need to go there to find it (unless you know how to move it into Folders on you phone's drive or on your SD card.)
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics I only have an iPad. I’m wondering if I need to purchase a laptop or computer to get the best access to all the possible sites and functionalities available?
on the Ancestry.com website, go to your DNA ethnicity results page, and click the top right button labeled "settings". Scroll down to the end and click on the 'download raw data file' button, and that should do it.
I downloaded my raw data from ancestry using my iPhone and got pages of numbers, confused 🤷♀️ can you help explain. Also can I find family members on Gedmatch? Thank you in anticipation.
Lorraine well I’m really not sure on how it works on iPhone. But on laptop or computer, just ignore those numbers, save the file of numbers as DNA file (whatever name you prefer). Then when you get on gedmatch, upload this “DNA file” on gedmatch. The steps to do that in detail are found in a video from this channel. And yes you can indeed find family members, Gedmatch shows you more family members than you would find on ancestry for example, because it mixes multiple databases together. So you might even find someone more closely related to you on Gedmatch, than your top relative on ancestry. Hope this helps and please ask again if you need anymore help.
Hello, I've downloaded the raw data from 23andme. They came in a zip file that I unzipped and saved in Excel CSV 69k. However, when uploading to GedMatch it says "ERROR the file is too small". Did anyone have the same issue? Same thing if I upload the zip file Thanks
You shouldn't unzip the files from the raw DNA. Download your RAW DNA files again and upload that to GEDmatch without opening it and you should be fine.
The basic steps are explained here. th-cam.com/video/-Z4vyKuSXa4/w-d-xo.html Be advised that MyHeritage might have changed a few steps, but the overall concept is correct.
How do I get my kit loaded when my cousin has already done that on my behalf using his email address? When I log in the home page says 'you have not uploaded any DNA kits, and there is no option acknowledging the fact that my kit has already been loaded.
I have been trying to get to ged match. they say I already registered but it has b een years and I forgotten my email. They say to keep site and then enter new number and I cant keep the same site. Please help.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Their comment was an observation at inaccessibility to people wanting to learn more or are professionals. Anyone can suffer from learning disabilities, not just 'entry level' people. It may seem that they are simply complaining about it being confusing to understand, but ADHD is more complex than that. Unclear instructions, layouts etc make it more difficult to do even the most simple things. And way harder for more professional or specific things, even if you are not a beginner. The suggestion that comes from this is, make things clearer. It doesn't mean dilute the information and instructions, just make it more accessible.
I uploaded my Ancestry DNA results a couple of years ago. I haven't had any new Matches for months. I wonder when I log in to GedMatch am I logging in to Genesis or does Genesis have another login place? Maybe I'm in the wrong place and therefore not seeing new Matches.
Tried numerous times to upload new FTDNA file (it comes in an Excel spreadsheet) and get the 'too small' error from GEDmatch. Is there a way to make this work? I have another test for another person from Ancestry that was in a .txt file and it worked well. In the video you mentioned creating your own file. Is this something that I will have to change over to txt?
Did you download a single chromosome or the entire autosomal DNA? FTDNA downloading can be confusing because of all the different options they give you.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics From the previous question also, it sounds like just a YDNA test from FTDNA can't be downloaded? No wonder I can't get it to work. So we have to pay the extra to add on the Autosomal?
I cannot figure out transferring my results from MyHeritage. It is not the same as Ancestry, which is what the videos keep saying. There are no instructions specifically for MyHeritage anywhere! I gave up and logged out of gedmatch.
I have a friend that I am helping with his genealogy. We are not related. He has a real tough problem breaking down a wall at his gg father. He has given me permission to analysis his DNA which is on Myheritage. I have my own kit on Gedmatch but can I upload his kit on my account from Myheritage? And would it be helpful to upload his pedigree too?
You can upload his kit to Gedmatch. With permission, I have uploaded all of my relatives to GEDmatch. You definitely should upload his pedigree as well.
You download your DNA from the company where you tested (if allowed) th-cam.com/video/-Z4vyKuSXa4/w-d-xo.html You upload that file to GEDmatch th-cam.com/video/XZfF1juyHbI/w-d-xo.html
On the front page of GEDmatch, after logging in. Look for the list of kits on the lower left side. You should see kits and a number beside it. Do you see that?
This is brilliant! See the "too small" error message on here. Not sure resolution, last time I tried uploading a file a Gedcom file to Ancestry it was "too large". I still need a crey for how many files I have in need of merging duplicates and not losing the correct/updated data to an old file. I really like this GEDmatch thing. Wouldn't if I was a criminal or if someone laid a hand on me.
Can Y-DNA kits raw data be uploaded? I thought so but someone else told me that it cannot be uploaded. I was telling someone that I believe that it can be and when you look at the FT DNA upload option it asks the Y Group if known for males.
Leaving answer for others: The values that can appear are Y, blank (none), N, and R. These values indicate which access options you opted for in the Edit Kit page. The "Y" indicates the public, police access option. A blank indicates the public, no police access option. An "N" indicates no public or police access option. An "R" indicates the research only option.
After uploading from NatGeo it states there are no X Chromosome data uploaded. How can I upload them, they are in a separate file downloaded from FTDNA.

Yes, you do...you will upload your DNA test results to GEDmatch. I used my Ancestry DNA results, but there are others, like 23andme, etc.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Thank you so much! Your answer is so appreciated!
If you have been tested in multiple DNA databases, can you upload results from each of them to GEDmatch?
Yes. And then you can merge those tests into a super kit. How to Create a DNA Superkit th-cam.com/video/IJmAHNSODuw/w-d-xo.html
Yo it says “when will kit be available for one-to-many tool?” And I don’t know which to click
24 hours (the answer is in the form that you fill out)
Andrew, I thought I had made my family tree private(hidden) for living persons, but they are showing! How do I "fix" this on GEDmatch??
Mine is .csv from MyHeritage..
I’m on 23 And Me and can’t upload file. I’m doing it on my iPad, do I need to upload it on my laptop? If so, how do I upload the file on my site?
I would try the laptop. Often tablets don't do all we wish them to do.
Does this show matches only from other people who put their dna onto this website or does it show the database that all the companies have combined?
Only data from those who uploaded their DNA to this website, regardless of company used..
My FTDNA data file is a .CVS file. When I downloaded it to GEDmatch an Error message appeared : the file is too small. What should I do? Thank you.
This is the problem that I am having now. Did you find the answer? Thanks
@@queennetwork7074 No. Sorry.
Paul Bizard 😇so we will have to download it on a desk top.
My cousin gave me my kit number from GED and told me all I need to was open a gedmatch account and input the number. But I'm not given that option anywhere.
Once the account is active and DNA is loaded, does this site continue to search for future new matches and notify you?
Not the same way that Ancestry or MyHeritage does. You have to check back periodically and run new reports.
I can't find my kit number.
It is on the home page after you sign in. There will be a list of kits that you uploaded (if you only uploaded one, then it should be the only one listed).
it turn me down for no reasons that i need look who is top of gedmatch lists.. not know why it won't sign in
did not understand how to upload files
I have a smartphone but no computer. I am not sure I ever downloaded anything but the apps from 23 & me and Ancestry DNA. So how do you get any file if you aren't sure where any of it is?
Your smartphone will have a download file. While it is downloading it should show you a title for the file. Then when you are at the GEDMATCH area to upload you will need to go there to find it (unless you know how to move it into Folders on you phone's drive or on your SD card.)
Thanks susangopher for answering the question.
How can i do this on my smart phone?
I would advise accessing a spreadsheet on a laptop or computer.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics I only have an iPad. I’m wondering if I need to purchase a laptop or computer to get the best access to all the possible sites and functionalities available?
The video was very helpful. However, I do not know how to download my DNA from ancestry.
on the Ancestry.com website, go to your DNA ethnicity results page, and click the top right button labeled "settings".
I'm new at this do I need to have a computer to upload to gedmatch or can I use a phone or tablet?
I believe you need a computer or tablet that can handle the large file sizes of the RAW DNA>
Hello,
I've downloaded the raw data from 23andme. They came in a zip file that I unzipped and saved in Excel CSV 69k.
However, when uploading to GedMatch it says "ERROR the file is too small". Did anyone have the same issue? Same thing if I upload the zip file
Thanks
You shouldn't unzip the files from the raw DNA. Download your RAW DNA files again and upload that to GEDmatch without opening it and you should be fine.
how to download my DNA file from MyHeritage ?
The basic steps are explained here. th-cam.com/video/-Z4vyKuSXa4/w-d-xo.html Be advised that MyHeritage might have changed a few steps, but the overall concept is correct.
Thank you, this is very helpful.
You're welcome. Please share it, and other videos by Devon, so our channel can grow.
How do I get my kit loaded when my cousin has already done that on my behalf using his email address? When I log in the home page says 'you have not uploaded any DNA kits, and there is no option acknowledging the fact that my kit has already been loaded.
Talk to your cousin to sort this out or contact GEDmatch support. I really don't know how to help you resolve this one. Sorry.
I have been trying to get to ged match. they say I already registered but it has b een years and I forgotten my email. They say to keep site and then enter new number and I cant keep the same site. Please help.
It is not Gaylord S. it is Margaret S.
Contact support.I don't handle that
How do I use the one on one if I don't have the kit numbers?
You don't. Or you can use the One-to-Many to get the kit numbers.
This seems so difficult. So much to read. I suffer from ADHD so my focus is not always clear. I do not remember Ancestry being this much reading
GedMatch is not made for entry level genetic genealogists.
@@FamilyHistoryFanatics 🤦♀️
Genesis has been turned into GEDmatch.
I thought I covered that in this video th-cam.com/video/-Z4vyKuSXa4/w-d-xo.html
I have a friend that I am helping with his genealogy. We are not related. He has a real tough problem breaking down a wall at his gg father. He has given me permission to analysis his DNA which is on Myheritage. I have my own kit on Gedmatch but can I upload his kit on my account from Myheritage? And would it be helpful to upload his pedigree too?
You can upload his kit to Gedmatch. With permission, I have uploaded all of my relatives to GEDmatch. You definitely should upload his pedigree as well.
Does GEDmatch work with CRIgenetics?
CRI genetics does not allow you to download your raw data. So, it could if you could get your dna files.
So... how does it get my DNA?
You download your DNA from the company where you tested (if allowed) th-cam.com/video/-Z4vyKuSXa4/w-d-xo.html
You upload that file to GEDmatch th-cam.com/video/XZfF1juyHbI/w-d-xo.html
Gedmatch it's a brilliant tool to use
I agree.
Where is the kit number?
On the front page of GEDmatch, after logging in. Look for the list of kits on the lower left side. You should see kits and a number beside it. Do you see that?
This is brilliant! See the "too small" error message on here. Not sure resolution, last time I tried uploading a file a Gedcom file to Ancestry it was "too large". I still need a crey for how many files I have in need of merging duplicates and not losing the correct/updated data to an old file. I really like this GEDmatch thing. Wouldn't if I was a criminal or if someone laid a hand on me.
Thanks for your feedback. Glad it could help.
how do you download myheritage dna results to your computer

Hi what is your opinion on a site called Your DNA portal?
I prefer promethease.com/
Can I upload dna from homedna?
I haven't heard of them.
Can Y-DNA kits raw data be uploaded? I thought so but someone else told me that it cannot be uploaded. I was telling someone that I believe that it can be and when you look at the FT DNA upload option it asks the Y Group if known for males.
Not to GEDMatch.
I have a win zip file popping up saying it is expired and I need to buy?
Look on google for another zip opening program.
I noticed in the video that your Ancestry upload filename was prefixed by your first name - did you rename the file?
Yes
Why am I receiving an error sign when I am uploading a zip file? Thanks
Where did you test from?
Family History Fanatics 😊 ancestry
I had a medical DNA test, would those files work with GEDmatch?
Nope. Sorry.
GED Match is so damn difficult, I wont join it next year or will try and get my money back this year.
Thank you so much for this video! Do you know what the Y in the "Your DNA resources" section stands for? It isn't listed on this or the newer legend.
The sound is not working on this video?
That might be an issue with your computer audio rather than the video as it's working fine for me. Best of luck!
I have my results from FTDNA but they re online
After uploading from NatGeo it states there are no X Chromosome data uploaded. How can I upload them, they are in a separate file downloaded from FTDNA.
You need to download the concatenated file from FTDNA, this will have both the autosomal and the X DNA information.
