I'll opine that Perlemuter was probably one of the greatest Chopinistes who ever lived. He never overstated; always projected the line; conveyed the essence of Chopin's intentions without any fussiness; never abused rubato...in fact to me he offers a more restrained, "Classic" Chopin which resembles that of his younger colleague Dinu Lipatti, also a pupil of Cortot...a Chopin more to my liking than the hyper-Romantic Lisztian type favoured by some others. These Preludes are wonderful…I think I'd place them alongside Perlemuter's fabulous early '60s recordings of the B minor Sonata and the Fantaisie…I think the pianist was at his peak with these recordings!
James Vaughan I suspect this is very authentic Chopin. As "romantic" as Chopin was, he wasn't given to excess rubato and he loved the classical composers (Mozart and Haydn) and Bach. I grew up on Perlemuter and can never get his ideas out of my head.
The peak of Perlemuter’s classic Chopin, along with a 1964 B minor Sonata on BBC Legends and a Barcarolle from 1962 on the French label Accord, if you can possibly find it or someone is good enough to post. At his best - and the more readily accessible Nimbus recordings are mostly just past his best - Perlemuter embodied what Karol Mikuli remembered of Chopin’s playing: that it was “chaste, distinguished and at times even severely reserved.” Surrounded by romantic virtuosi, Chopin despaired that his music would be played properly after he passed. He never heard Perlemuter. Thanks so much for sharing.
I bought this disc second hand ~15 years ago. At that time I hadn´t heard of Perlemuter and hence didn´t know how lucky I was. Perlemuter escaped the gravity of Cortots style of Chopin playing (which i equaly like) and created a less subjective style without sacrificing too much of emotional intensity. Truely one of the reference recordings .

I agree. I was fortunate enough to attend many of his recitals and master classes. He was a master of Chopin, Faure and Ravel. Unsurpassed.

So many right ways to play Chopin but this is perhaps my favourite.

Can I ask if the CD mentions what piano was used?
It was an LP from the sixties and containes also op. 45. Only few lines about Perlemuter and nothing about his Instrument.
After listening to more than 20 complete op. 28s. Think this is near the top, very poetical, very musical. No desire to impress.
