    I mistakenly called my favorite breed here a Black Cochin - They are actually a Blue Cochin in case you are looking for them online.

      SSLFamilyDad. I knew they were blue cochins. You probably know that blue mated to Blue doesn't give you 100% blue chicks? You get blue, black, and splash. Thanks for this video I enjoyed watching it. McMurray Hatchery I think is overrated. Cackle hatchery has been awesome.

    When you described the hybrid meat birds that grow too quickly you said “Leghorn” leghorns are bred to be exceptional white egg layers, not meat birds. The bird your talking about are the Cornish Cross or X Rock. Sure, they are a mutant breed bred to grow fast, albeit their feathers don’t grow in the prettiest sometimes, but they can grow just fine if raised properly. Feed them 12 on and 12 off and give them Biotin in their water and let them forage as well and they will have no issues with their legs. It’s commercial chicken farming that affects the birds this way. They are in tiny pens and given food 24/7 where they have no choice but to lay there eating non stop. They care more about the giant breast meat then their quality of life.

    I'm with you on the cost analysts. My chickens love our attention. The neighbors laugh because they follow us around. I give eggs away to our neighbors. I like having them. It's like stress relief. I was just put 100% VA and can't work anymore and they always make me feel much more calm and relaxed.

    Barred Rocks are good for everything.
    Lay eggs consistently.
    They can go broody if you want a broody hen.
    Good for meat.
    Maybe personal experience, but they seem more intelligent than other breeds.
    Friendly breed.
    Hardy in most environments.

    Appreciate all the chicken information. Been keeping up with you and all the new changes for you and your family for a little over a year now. About the time my wife and I decided to keep a couple chickens in our backyard in St. Louis Missouri. In the city...lol. Got quite a few good ideas from your chicken set up and a few others from back then for our own coop and run. Periodically making minor changes to suit our needs.

    We've been pleased with Black Australorps. Very friendly, heat and cold hardy, and good egg layers. They follow us around the yard like feathered puppies! We've just added 6 Blue Australorps to our flock to add some color; considering some Splash Australorps next year....

    • @SewScrappinIdAmy
      @SewScrappinIdAmy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was about to say the same thing. I have a Leghorn, and she lays almost everyday even into the winter. She is small and hardly eats a thing. She would not be a good meat bird, but Leghorns are great egg layers. I will always have at least one for white eggs.

    • @gursheeshsingh9138
      @gursheeshsingh9138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SewScrappinIdAmy Yep they are just amazing layers, I'd say the best so far. I've been using red cornish crossed with Plymouth rock for meat birds. Rhode islands for eggs, but i remember my brown leghorns, they're just the best layers, a little too nervous than regular chicken. But I'm thinking about getting a flock of em again.

    Light Sussex are by far the very best breed I have raised. I have been through multiple breeds. Last Spring (2020) a friend gave me a Sussex hen with 9 chicks. After the chicks became fully feathered the 4 roosters went in the freezer. The hens are extremely friendly hens that lay medium/large brown eggs every day. My girls come running when I call.

    I have alot of cochins. They are really calm chickens. They are big but the thick feathering makes them look alot bigger than they are. I have ordered alot of birds over the years from Murray mcmurray hatchery and for the most part I've had good luck. For the past 4 years I've been ordering from cackle hatchery and have also been pleased with my orders, but I still like hatching my own. I've had many different breeds and kinds of birds all my life. There a real joy to own and raise. God bless and keep on keeping on.

    Great Video! Love Your Channel!
    I've been Raising Chickens For Eggs For About 8 Years Now Free Range But Fenced. I've Had To Settle On Rhode Island Reds and Buff Orpingtons Because they are The Only Breeds That Haven't Been Attacked By Hawks and Eagles.
    Keep up The Great Videos!

    Strombergs has their magazine sales book set up where each type of chicken is rated.
    It's really easy to select what breed you want. I was clueless and lucked out and got winter hardy birds. I'm in central Illinois and the Southern type birds would freeze to death. Americana is perfect for me.

    When you were talking about the bag of worms and the two/three chickens were fighting that Rooster eye balled them hard haha. He got in the middle of them quick. Love the video. Those treats got mine to scratch the dirt really good. However they like to scratch in spots that make holes. Seems like they are trying to dig tunnels lol.

    we have kept Rhode Island Reds for the last three Summers at the cottage and the guy we get them from handle them quite frequently by the time we get them they are quite friendly and I am able to get them to follow me around the yard if they happened to get out at the end of each summer we always end up giving them to the neighbor up the road and she will usually end up hatching eggs that spring that came from our Birds it's a knife circle of life:-)

    I enjoy your videos and especially like that you put a scripture at the end of each video.
    I have four backyard chickens, and I love them very much. They are all names after flowers.

    you should try black Australorps - they are my favorite breed - they lay well and longer than most breeds, they are very mellow, great foragers, very hardy in the heat or cold, make great broody hens/mommas, not flighty - just all around great chickens! I also really like New Hampshire Reds for duel purpose chickens

    Have enjoyed following you and watching the informative videos, just recently have my first flock 12 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. have enjoyed them lots, very docile and fun to hangout with, you would think they are kin to a lap cat or dog.

    So much good information. Thank you so much. We just bought 6 tiny Rhode Island Reds. They are in a box under a heat lamp as we build them a coop and a run. Very interested in the tasty worm treats. Think I'll be giving ours birds some. Good way to make friends with your flock no matter the size.

    I don't know what you were talking about with with the leghorns, they're a thin and agile breed. Probably thinking of some other white chicken.
