1992 FINAL FOUR: Duke Blue Devils vs. Indiana Hoosiers

- Bobby Hurley and the Duke Blue Devils defeat Damon Bailey and the Indiana Hoosiers in the 1992 Final Four. Duke jumped out to a big lead for most of the game but had to hang on late as Indiana made an improbable surge towards the end. I do not own the rights to this video and do no profit in any way.
Duke fans cannot possibly understand the level of obsession surrounding this team in the state of Indiana. 4 of our starters were born and raised in Indiana while Duke might as well be a professional team with their players from all over the country. This Indiana team was made up of champions, and it represented the passion of all Hoosiers. One game doesn't change that.
Duke lost only two games that year and both were when Bobby Hurley had a broken foot. I'd put that Duke team up against any team in college bastketball history. Yet somehow, Indiana fans make it out like Duke could've never won that game without help. That was a great Indiana team but they weren't better than Duke that year. Period.
they play 10 times indiana wins probably half the games thats how good Indiana was that year
This Indiana fan would tend to agree with your point. However, the IU team was really peaking, playing near its potential. IU played very well early but Duke responded strongly.
Bobby Knight was an abusive basketball coach.
Both teams were great. They play ten times I think each would win half of them. Duke was not clearly better than IU that season.
Indiana got screwed, just like UK the game before. Amazing they almost were able to win despite all the bullshit phantom fouls throughout the game. The 1992 Championship was a gift to Duke.
i cant believe you're blaming the refs haha.grow up.
There was something odd about the Duke win against the Running Rebels the year before.
These were two really evenly matched teams. It should have been one of the great games ever. Sadly, the officiating influenced the outcome and all we remember is Ted Valentine's misconduct instead of what would have been a historic battle. Just a shame.
didnt look like two evenly matched teams to me.
All but one starter for Indiana was fouled out of the game.
Personal Fouls called:
Alan Henderson - 5
Calbert Cheaney - 5
Damon Bailey - 5
Greg Graham - 5
Chris Reynolds - 4
Matt Nover - 3
Eric Anderson - 2
Jamal Meeks - 2
Todd Leary - 2
In the 1991-92 season the Hoosiers averaged 18 fouls called against them per game while forcing 23 foul calls on their opponents per game. They averaged 28 free throw attempts to 18 for their opponents per game.
Indiana was called for 33 fouls to Duke's 18 in this game, with Duke shooting 42 free throws to Indiana's 16.
I'm not going to editorialize these numbers for you. You draw your own conclusions.
I agree Duke was the more aggressive team
duke attacked more to the basket, plus grant hill fouled out, so your excuse is bullcrap
@@Jack_Reacher2024 just say you don't know ball dude. You don't have to embarrass yourself.
@@tperkins17 if you attack the basket more like duke does you will get more fouls called, but the fact grant hill fouled out proves the refs weren't favoring duke with foul calls.
@@Jack_Reacher2024 did you watch the game? Both teams were attacking the basket. There was tons of questionable calls made against Indiana. You can’t merely explain it away like that. Clearly you didn’t watch the game in its entirety.
Just watched this travesty again. 42 FT attempts for Duke. Absolutely ridiculous. Cheany,Bailey,Henderson,Graham all fouled out.
So what Allen lol
I miss the 90s sometimes.
Im a purdue fan and I hate IU but it's clear that the refs were not consistent
I know a lot of UNC fans that hate Duke but admitted the referees were fair and if anything pro-Indiana but Duke won.
@@jayzee7538 I don’t even remember why I commented that lmao.
@@jayzee7538 that's total bullshit

How great was college basketball when kids played 4 years.
I haven’t watched college basketball religiously since 1998. I binge watch the tournament games from 1984-97 over and over again. Kobe and Kevin Garnett killed college basketball
@@Mystic_Mary I'll go you one better on that theory: I feel like early entry has ruined both the college game and the pro's. Lots of selfish players with all the physical attributes who don't bother to learn how the game is played. It's rare that I can enjoy basketball on any level these days, except for high school games.
College basketball is over now 😡
@@ba4sloppyyea I’m sure playing in college would have made Kobe and Garnett better players.
@@ba4sloppyyea I’m sure playing in college would have made Kobe and Garnett better players.
Meeks had a great look to tie with 15 seconds left. That's about as good as you can get under the circumstances. Just didn't go down. Amazing that IU was even in the game playing 5 on 8.
So true.
looks like booby hurley killed indiana not the refs. and duke turned up the defense in the 2nd half, just like they did against michigan the next game, shut them down.i like how you ignore that the refs fouled out grant hill haha
@@Jack_Reacher2024 Ted Valentine has admitted in interviews that he was sticking it to Indiana and Knight with his reffing. He threw the game and got away with it.
IU got ROBBED that night.
Pathetic, everyone watch the game from the beginning, keep track of the fouls called and the fouls not called on both teams. The results are they did not call the same touch fouls on Duke that they called on Indiana. Indiana was not going to win that game. Very sad!!!! Watch the game play by play and you can tell something is going on.
i see many questionable fouls called on duke in the 1st half that shouldnt have been called.
I watched this live as a young teen...I just watched it again and the eye test is the same...Duke brought their whistles with them that night.
TV Teddy!
looks like someone carries hate for duke and the spurs haha, duke and the spurs must have beaten this guys teams haha.
I was at this game - the back half of the '92 Final Four! There have been very few games in NCAA Tournament history that had the hype this one generated beforehand. To this day, I haven't seen a coach tear open the officials the way Coach Knight did during the second half - and that was during a timeout. Too bad the title game was a dud - Duke cruised against the Fab 5. Thanks for putting this up on TH-cam...
i now understand why everyone hates Ted Valentine
did you watch the first half? duke was being called for some very questionable calls.
Indiana got whooped in this game...by the refs. Absolutely terrible referring. That being said, Indiana almost had a lead of 10 points. Would have been 12 at the half had Anderson knocked down a jumper, but he missed and Duke cut it to 5 at half. Ouch. But still, the calls were terrible. IU had 33 fouls called on them compared to 18 for Duke. Henderson, Cheaney, Greg Graham, and Bailey all fouled out. Only grant Hill fouled out for Duke, and he played 29 minutes.
The refs were out to get Knight, he had insulted them earlier in the week in the media. I'll never forget the charging calls on Cheaney ... there's never been another game called like this one.
oh please, this game wasnt even close, indiana just hit some three's late to make it look respectable.
@@Jack_Reacher2024 you clearly did not watch this game.
@@BazookaIke not only did i watch it, i have it on dvd and in much higher quality than the video here.this game wasnt as close as the score indicated, indiana just had one guy get hot at the end and made the score look decent for hitting all those three pointers at the end.
This one sticks out in the infamy of notorious Knight-hater Ted Valentine. Look at the fouls. How can this disparity possibly be?
It was easy to hate Bob Knight, god rest his soul.
A couple observations.
1. Jim Nantz has been doing this for a long time.
2. 4 out of 5 Indiana starters are from in-state. Good stuff.
One last thing, this game began the long estrangement between Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight.
a travesty....this game was unfairly called. Knight and Indiana should have won.
I was a freshman attending Indiana NW and watched this on tv. Such a great game but I must have thrown my hat down 30 times. Watching this again gives me the feels. The 90s was the best.
Ted Valentine cost Indiana a national championship big time! That game made me sick to my stomach ugh never forget that pathetic refereeing one of the worst officiating games I've ever seen!
Valentine was a maggot.
If only there were three referees in this game instead of just him!
looks like booby hurley killed indiana not the refs. and duke turned up the defense in the 2nd half, just like they did against michigan the next game, shut them down.
@@Jack_Reacher2024Referees completely messed up this game. Put your Duke fandom down for a second and realize that they got an incredibly friendly whistle all night.
@@reptilelicks9796 the fact grant hill fouled out proves you wrong. duke's defense was just too much for indiana.
I remember being in tears after this game ... Should have been Knights #4 that year. Hate Duke to this day with passion of a burning sun. Curse Valentine ... he gave the game away.
Bob Knight had mental issues and should have been fired.
If only there were two more referees along with Valentine.
@@brianarbenz1329 I understand the skepticism, but it was obvious even in game, and your eyes don't lie. I realize I'm biased, but I have talked to neutral fans who feel the same thing, especially those who watched at the time. Blatant and known animosity between night and the official, and one official is old that's needed to dramatically impact a game especially when it comes to fouls. Look at the foul disparity, especially earlier in the game. They wanted Duke to get through, and Valentine certainly didn't want Knight to get through.
the game wasnt even close, an indiana player hit all those three's at the end to make it closer than it was.
@@Jack_Reacher2024 Indiana was on the verge of blowing out Duke late in the first half and early in the second half until the officials called seven fouls on Indiana in a five minute span, putting Indiana's two best players on the bench so Duke could make its run.
Ted Valentine was on the take and Knight knew it. Ruined one of the best years in college basketball history.
Valentine and Knight had a thing! They should not have put Valentine in that game, PERIOD!!
42 FT for Duke...16 for Indiana...enough said.
Cope. Duke haters are so predictable. They scream “Refs!” just as much as Democrats scream “Russia!”
Stats don't lie. 33 personal fouls, many of them touch fouls in that game, JUST on Indiana. That has to be a record. There have been entire games where they didn't call 33 fouls on both teams. Look it up.
@@BaldwinVoice Shut your bitch ass up. It's always you mayo eating types.
not enough said since grant hill fouled out, so you're full of crap
@@Blackdog4818 scoreboard doesn't lie either. Duke 81 - Indiana 78. Bye!
Here you have a ref, Ted Valentine, who was SO bad that he finally got banned from the NCAA tournament and two different conferences. TV Teddy was an arrogant renegade who defied what it means to be an actual referee.
ed hightower had a personal vendetta against duke, he was always making bad calls on duke in the final four.
@@Jack_Reacher2024 cute theory except Indiana, not Duke, was the team that got screwed here

@@Jack_Reacher2024 okay, buddy, feel free to ignore that Duke was in the double bonus by 6 minutes into the second period while Valentine swallowed his whistle for Duke's defense
@@aaronrider4051 once again duke just turned up the defense in the 2nd half like they did vs michigan in the finals.none of the fouls indiana made were bogus fouls, all fouls on indiana were legit, the fouls on duke however in the 1st half were questionable
Totally agree, I just remember A LOT of people complaining about the officiating in the second half.
Funny how I appreciate these great teams (Duke, Bulls) from the 90's now that we're decades removed. Great years for basketball.
If Ted Valentine hadn't been assigned this game, Knight and IU would have at least 3 more NCAA championships. 92, 2002, and 2005 (Bobby would have never been fired and Sean May would have gone to IU instead of UNC)
Actually, I was pulling for Indiana in this game, even though I wasn't an Indiana fan. Laettner should have been kicked out of the previous game against Kentucky for stomping on a Kentucky player, and suspended for this game for the same incident. But, fact is, in the first half of this game Duke was being called for some questionable fouls.
+Jack W
It was 42-16 on FTs.
Wes Fox Haston wouldn't have left early. Imagine the front court of Haston, Jeffries and Newton!!
@Wes Fox Well if Coverdale hadn't gotten hurt Indiana might have won anyway
Typical whining by Knight worshippers. Never face reality. Never let your team be responsible for its loses.
Bobby Hurley killed them!
DUKE AND INDIANA ARE TWO GREATH LEGENDS IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL HISTORY !!!
The refs were out to get Knight, he had insulted them earlier in the week in the media. I'll never forget the charging calls on Cheaney ... there's never been another game called like this one.
oh please if that were true knight never would have won it all in 87., he had been insulting the refs for years before that
Game was rigged, but that's part of the sport. Let's accept NCAA basketball for what it is.
We (Indiana) got stiffed big time in this one. I was real happy at halftime, but about kicked the TV in towards the end.
Marty Clark hit some cold blooded freethrows
The most bullshit officiating I ever saw.
The NCAA clearly wanted Duke to win this game. The calls were clearly in favor of Duke all night. Bobby Knight and the Hoosiers had no chance of winning this game before it even started.
That not-intentional foul call towards the end? Microscopic foul called against Duke by their center on the Rebound? A bunch of prayer 3s going in and Indiana STILL loses? You can't ask for a bigger chance than that, the game really wasn't as close as the score makes it look
Fuck Ted Valentine.
Indiana was winning, then the charge against Cheney early in the second half turned what would have been a great play and a score into a foul for Cheney who would eventually foul out. Ted Valentine then T's up Knight, more points and suddenly a lead for Indiana is a lead for Duke. Both teams were great, would easily win the Championship today.
If this was a fair game, IU could’ve definitely won. That team could’ve beaten any team in the nationa that year.
After Laettners incredible performance against Kentucky he didn’t play that well the following games against IU and Michigan. My memory of him was total dominance during his heyday, but he didn’t really play that well his last couple games in the NCAA tournament in 92’.
Just realized the 6'8 forward for Indiana Matt Millner I believe HE PLAYED IN THE MOVIE BLUE CHIPS WITH NICK NOLTE AND SHAQUILLE O'NEAL
Matt Nover
90's college basketball was great. I really thought the semi-finals in 1991 and 1992 were the championship games. Michigan blew it, they could have made history winning back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993 or even in 1993 and 1994. Sad.
IU got their referee-revenge a couple of years later when Rip Hamilton clearly fouled Boozer after a missed free throw by Jason Williams in the final seconds of an NCAA tournament game. Those of us from Tobacco Road are quite familiar with “Duke gets all the calls”.
Matt Nover, aka Ricky Roe from Blue Chips.
Duke had some help in their two championships from 1991 - 1992.
Too bad the video quality isn't as good as the Duke-Kentucky game.
Leary, who shot 3 3 point shots should have been a starter from the start of the game.
One word Ted Valentine. That was our nemis. He hated coach Knight
IU got flat out robbed in this game.
Shows how great a coach Knight was, took a team with less individual talent, plus all the biased refereeing, and almost won.
It's crazy christian LAETTNER misses his first shot with the soft push. HE WENT 10-10 AGAINST KENTUCKY ,AND 10-10 FROM THE FOUL LINE SHOT 💯 PERCENT
That shot at the end, if they had gotten a clean steal and had made it before the buzzer, would have been absolutely incredible.
Grant hilled fouled out but still played more than all of Indiana players who fouled out except Henderson. Just watch the game. Ted Valentine screwed IU.
this game is a travesty of justice. i'm glad i was only 11 when this game took place or my blood pressure would be up two fold. how can one officials petty grudge decide the outcome of a national semi-final. this just goes to show that the duke's, unc's and kentucky's of the college basketball world not only get away with murder(i.e unc's current situation), but they are seemingly handed wins in huge games just for showing up.
They decided the outcome of the quarterfinal too. Not to mention the semifinal the season before
Or maybe the whole sport is controlled...
@@TheWakeup011 Always has been.
Stop crying like a girl Duke was better period

Where was Grant Hill
Notice that at the end of the game Knight barely shook Coach K's hand, choosing to hug someone else.
The announcers were out of control. I hate both schools and saw that the foul calls were consistently called in terms of types from half to half.
You are exactly right. I remember that 2002 game well. The no-call on the hacking of Boozer at the end of the game was ridiculous. I didn't realize when I posted this game that I was creating a Hoozier fanbase support group.
To be fair Boozer pushed off to get the offensive rebound
@@DanielSong39 totally did
"Duke jumped out to a big lead" IU was up twenty at the half. Nine million offensive fouls in the second half flustered IU. That game was a joke.
they were up by 5 not 20, smh

Amen brother.
COACH K vs BOB KNIGHT !!!
BOBBY KNIGHT AND MIKE KRYZEWSKY ARE TWO LIVING LEGENDS !!!
Devils
What do you mean I can't recall a time since coach K has been the coach when they didn't play like that.
I have This Game On VHS!
I believe this was the last season where the clock didn't stop after a made basket in the final minute. The ending sequence would have been interesting - Nover's three went through with around 7 seconds still to play but because the game clock ran during the 5-count all they had to do was basically get it inbounds. Back then if you were down two possessions late in the game with no timeouts you had to score with over 5 seconds remaining otherwise the opponent didn't even have to inbound.
+walterlv01 I got curious after reading this post. The last year was 1993, the next year, where the clock kept going. And you're absolutely right. It would have really been interesting if the clock stopped. I do think, however, that Nover's shot was a 2, not a 3. Look at his right toe.
Lets make a new version, my favorite video LGD
Here's a couple of assessments of this game. Both teams play the exact same motion offensive sets.
The difference is that Duke was more aggressive than Indiana. When you're more aggressive on offense, you'll get the benefit of the whistle.
Complain all you want, but when referees call the game close, you adjust and find a way to win.
Stop the excuses.
Yes great teams adjust but if the refs are determined to take it away, they have the ability to do so.
THANK YOU!
Bobby Hurley was the difference in this game. Tough as nails. There are some games where the fouls are actually made by one team more than the others. I always laugh when fans yell at a ref to "even up the fouls." Would you yell at the players to "even up the turnovers"?
and you're forgetting at the end where IU was fouling on purpose too
This will be the Monday night championship game this year! Indiana vs duke! Duke wins 73-69!!!
At the beginning, Billy Packer actually compared Laettner to Kareem and Walton in NCAA history. That didn't age well.
Why? He was unmatched in college, wasn't that the comparison?
1:34:35 - Knight was p.o.’d at the end. Gave krzyzewski a curt hand shake.
Very chilly reception right after the game between Knight and coach K ...all turned out ok though, just watch coach K’s hall of fame speech...this was not a well played game, but a great game nonetheless
Whats up with the pussy Duke players rolling around on the ground crying on every foul?
I know exactly what Coach Knight was thinking in the last minute!! Why didn't I start Leary instead of Bailey!! Lol!!!!
Henderson's last foul was not a foul, play the speed back at .25 G. Hill's r. hand moves forward
Did you watch Duke during those years? Duke ALWAYS had more FT than their opponents because they aggessively attacked the basket. Teams HAD to hack them merceilessly to try and stop Duke's speed. I guess the refs loved Indiana in the first half and then switched in the second half. It's not like Bobby Knight wasn't working the refs just as hard as Coach K. With that, I am an Indiana fan since some of my close family graduated from there. I didn't post this to stick it in Hoosier fans' faces.
the final four game between duke and west virginia in 2010 proves you wrong, so does the duke kansas 1988 final four game, charge after charge on duke in that game when they were blocking fouls,
bobby knight hit kids, and one of the kids he hit committed suicide, he messed him up, and it was caught on video too after he lied about it and had his fans totally fooled who defended him not knowing what he did
Graham should have took that 3 at the end
I don't know which video you are referring to because there are several of them. The one I watched showed Indiana's #1 (don't know his name) pulling Boozer's arm after Boozer got the rebound with four seconds left. Agree to disagree.
True but Boozer pushed off right before that.
Was this the game where Coach Knight sent a letter to Coach K before the game? I remember it being a really bitter letter, Knight didn't have balls enough to deliver it himself, he had someone else do it. I think Bobby Knight is one of the top 5 coaches in NCAA history, but he really is a jerk in many ways, no reason to treat someone like that, I mean they were in battles together at West Point, Coach K acknowledged Knight many, many times and gave him credit for a lot of his own success. Really sad that some people let their ego get the better of them! But, I still admire what Bobby Knight did as a Coach, I think he got the "screws" put to him at IU! However, Coach K is still my favorite and #1 or #2 all time NCAA coach....I always admired John Wooden!
Knight is a petty, small person. I’m from Indiana and the state is full of provincial hero worshippers who don’t know how to hold people accountable.
Why didn't they give that ball to Leary with 13 seconds left? Dude was on fire! Meeks ugly ass was trying to be a hero.
Damn, look at all them white boys on the court!?
yeah, like Antonio Lang, Thomas Hill, Grant Hill, Brian Davis.
Bigot
maybe just maybe the Hoosiers actually happened to foul more than Duke, could it be? was it really a possibility?..wow what a revelation!!...funny how the losing team ALWAYS gets robbed and their team NEVER commits any fouls and could NEVER EVER foul more than their opponent.
Really people the refs grant hill fouled out only playing 29 minutes. And Thomas Hill got called for a push off foul on the first POSSESION of the game
ALSO INDIANA WAS IN THE ONE AND ONE BONUS WITH OVER TEN MINUTES LEFT IN THE FIRST HALF,AND UP BY FIVE POINTS.IT'S NOT THE REFEREES,THE BETTER TEAM WON THE GAME GO DUKE BEAT ARKANSAS
Hahahaha Indiana fans blaming the refs for losing. You lost to a better team. One of greatest teams of all time. Just deal with it babies
I'm legit just learning after 30 years that IU fans felt they were jobbed. Also they had to foul to get back in the game. Duke was the better team .... very strange comments from IU fans
Leary for 3!
Duke stands no chance against IU this year.
Hurley,26 points,6 threes...a big reason why IU lost..enough of the crying waaaahh
@ 0:51 the packer points
I have, Son...take your IU beer goggles off...
I was furious after this game, but I've gotten a bit more philosophical about it over the years. The stat every announcer pointed out that season for Indiana was "they make more free throws than their opponents attempt." Even if you don't buy into the theory that the refs "stole" this one from Indiana, the Hoosiers finally encountered a team that got more respect from the officials than they did. And that was the game, for all intents and purposes.
Indiana ran into a team that the refs (Ted Valentine) didn't have a problem with.
They fouled out 3 of Indiana's starting 5 and their 6th man. There is no excusing that. Corrupt as heck.
If you're not gonna cover, Greg Graham, then I'm lea in' and you fucking guys can run until ya can't eat supper!!!

Not like your moms lol jim jam.
In my mind growing up in ACC country this Indiana team didn't have a shot to win. This Duke team is an all time team. When you think about even comparing Duke to the UNLV team the previous year, Duke was the more talented. Grant Hill was a transcendent NBA talent and Laettner the most accomplished college player of all time. If Indiana would have won it would have been a historic upset. Im a Duke hater btw but Im honest
IU fans just shutup. Duke played a poor game and beat your best game of the season. The FT disparity is because Duke had rim attackers....Hurley with his drives, Laettner, Hill guys, Davis, Lang. Those guys go hard to the cup. How about IU defends without fouling. If it makes you feel any better you all got revenge in 2002 and us Duke fans could point out some suspect calls against us in that game but we wont, we lost that game to a gritty IU team that yr. The IU fans crying about refs this game are embarrassing their own program. Have some class.
Jay Zee you're and idiot... funny is your duke team is from all over the us. Indianas team was truly and Indiana team. Go eat dust

Duke fans... just shut up. Admit the game was rigged. You don’t shoot 42FT and have 4 players foul out if it’s called fairly. IU could’ve beaten any team in the nation that year.
