I was a freshman in highschool. My Dad took me to a bar he often frequented, and we watched this game surrounded by UK fans, as we lived in Northern Kentucky. We are both IU fans and i will never forget that night. Miss you Dad. Wish we could watch one more IU game together 😢
As a Duke hater for most of my life, this was one of my all-time favorite college basketball/NCAA tournament upsets 😭 Really, this Duke squad literally had future NBA pros at every position. Even though Indiana went all the way to the championship game, this Duke team had no business losing to this Indiana team ON PAPER. incredible comeback and upset.
Greatest college basketball game I have ever watched and I'm not even an Indiana fan! I remember watching this live in my living room as a 7 year old kid and being amazed at the comeback and how the last 11 seconds played out!
@@JMan-24 The one thing that brought about this more than anything else was Duke's team attitude during the 90s and 2000s. They didn't just expect to win they expected to embarrass other teams and several of their key players over the years embodied this personification into their gameplay. Duke simply fits the theme of "stuck up, snobby, entitled, brats" perfectly. I think everyone enjoys watching an overconfident ego driven opponent get served a nice piece of humility.
I was at this game. Unbelievable experience. Lifelong Indiana fan. Watching them climb back into this game after being down 17 points in the second half was surreal. To this day I don’t think I’ve watched a better college basketball game
I don’t know, that elite 8 loss to MSU 3 years ago felt more like a choke job than this because that Duke team with Zion and RJ Barrett had far more talent than even this version of Duke and MSU had no legit NBA ready players on that team. At least Indiana had Jeffries, an All-American at the time.
@@kenalier tough one because the 2002 Duke team had strong talent too to win it all. But the '98 team blowing huge lead to Kentucky and '04 choking to Connecticut in Final 4 weren't good either. '04 Duke then would've played Georgia Tech in Final. The '19 team was lucky to win both games prior to Michigan St so they were already showing vulnerability
As an IU fan, it’s keep forgetting how loaded this Indiana team was. That being said, Jeff Newton was so bittersweet to watch. There were times where he played like a first team All American and there were other times where he played as if he were bored and would rather be anywhere else but on a basketball court. I’ve always said that if you combine the heart and consistency of AJ Moye with the raw talent of Jeff Newton, you would have Anthony Davis.
I heard Dane Fife in an interview sometime after this game about how dumb he felt after fouling Williams there, then feeling relieved when Williams missed the FT. And the razzing he took from his teammates in the locker room was unrelenting.
I’m about 10 rows up in the yellow shirt section. Incredible night at Rupp Arena. Watching Duke go down and then watching my school Kent State (I was a sophomore at the time) beat Pitt in OT in the second game. Amazing doubleheader of basketball.
I was in eighth grade when this happened. I hated Duke with a passion - and still do - and so I ran up and down the hallway at my mom's house several times following their win. I was disappointed when they fell in the final, of course, but I'll take this win anytime.
I did not realize Jared Jeffries was 2 inches taller than Trayce Jackson Davis …that’s how good tjd is you wouldn’t even realize it. Wonder how much better he’d be if he had those extra inches
I wonder how good Jared Jeffries had been if not for the ankle (note stats before and after that season) but had he stayed four years at IU. He'd have been that 6'10" guy who avg 21/9.5rpg/4.5ast/2.5 blocks and a steal and half. Guarding all five positions.
its kind of crazy cause im 1hr from bloomington, but never was iu fan, and hated duke, but this was big deal and i rooted for iu, and i liked jared jeffries ... its a shame cause bobby would have taken them all the way i feel..
One of the greatest games ever played, with its 20 year anniversary passed. A dominant Duke team denied a repeat title by an Indiana team that had nothing for them for most of the season and the early part of that game.
Indiana might have set the record for turning the most missed free throws into rebounds and then a two point bucket same for missed layups and then getting a put back and getting fouled for an and 1

Especially as many times as Indiana turned the ball over. Duke should have buried them early in the game.

This game proves that free throws are one of the biggest parts in the game of basketball.
The only time UK fans and IU fans united together 😆
Pretty sure the whole college basketball universe was pulling for an IU win lol
There isn’t anyone that UK fans hate more than Duke. To say that they are still bitter about the Laettner-Timberlake incident is an understatement.
Yeah

Incredible game. One of my all time favorite memories.
Not only did this Indiana team upset the number 1 seed but also the defending champions. And the way it ended. All time classic!
Of all the Duke choke jobs......this tops the list.
Pathetic

So much better than today's game. Something is missing
That was a classic Mike Davis reaction after the 3 pointer and foul

This was the game that crushed my childhood. Huge Duke and Jason Williams fan; my first love in all of sports, and this game wrecked me.

1:21:10 Almost a repeat of the Pacers fouling the Knicks' Larry Johnson in 1999.....
There was a lot of Kentucky fans at this game just to cheer against duke lol.
Refs did EVERYTHING they could to give Duke the game in the 1st half, then tightened it up in the 2nd, one of the best games I’ve ever seen! Amazing!
Unselfish team playing with some heart... haven’t seen that at IU since

Still rings true to this day unfortunately

Payback for 1992. Kinda.
Every time I watch this I think Duke is going to win …. NOOOO … GO HOOSIERS ……
Another reason Duke lost really J Will didn’t have a good game
Duke was scared of the 3 so they were giving up layups inside
Maybe for good reason though. Next game they went 15 for 19 from long range
