I guess those who love this movie (like me) see it through the prism of their youth. Back in the 80s Q was seen as a comedy. The joke was that a gritty hard boiled cop drama, starring actors who were frequently in gritty hard boiled cop dramas could somehow be about a flying monster. Also, many critics were rooting for the success of this film because Larry Cohen made it mainly to spite 20th Century Fox for firing him from the big budget gritty hard boiled cop drama I, the Jury......But none of that likely resonates with someone watching Q today. I personally didn't find it too difficult to believe a flying creature could stay unnoticed for so long in 80s New York. There weren't cameras every where back then and the ones that did exist did a terrible job of photographing moving things. Awesome video!! Thanks for making it.
Well, Cohen had already paid for his hotel room, so he figured he should do something. But so far as I know, nobody remembers "I, the jury" so it probably worked out better for Cohen that way.
Guy who likes this flick here. Firstly, I wana note that it actually IS addressed and explained how the winged monster avoids being seen. A character in the flick states very clearly (duno how this guy managed to miss it. Perhaps he went to the can) that it does so by methodically flying in line with the sun. Also, it focuses so much on Moriarty's character because it's really about him as much as the monster. Their NAMES even begin with the SAME LETTER (Quinn and Quetzalcoatl), so then the TITTLE refers to BOTH of them (something else this reviewer failed to pick up on evidently).
You're totally entitled to enjoy this film. No I didn't notice that they both started with a Q. But it doesn't change the fact that, in my opinion, Moriarty's character is such an annoying person. I just hated him. And also, that guy in the film that explains how the monster is never seen is just a theory. I don't think it was the actual cause.
Ive seen this movie characterized as "Detectives qui chang caine and john shaft versus an ancient aztec god monster" I think that's the best description ever for it.
I strongly disagree with you. I love this film and i think it's a great movie, it's a beloved cult classic for many and that includes me. (But i still respect your opinion)
Agreed that this is overrated, with Q itself being the only memorable thing. Larry Cohen was a frustrating filmmaker. He often had a cool seed of an idea (Return to Salem's Lot), biting social commentary (The Stuff), and great use of locations (he notoriously hijacked a real parade in God Told Me To), but his films were usually poorly paced and centered around dull cop characters.
Generally speaking, I liked the low budget creativity and the really weird story. I get that today this stuff is not really tolerable, but when the video stores ruled, we took what we could get... and this is actually one of the better monster features from the time period... the cast was great and the story was funky and surprising.@@awfulmoviereviews6792

FYI writer & director Cohen originally had, in the screenplay, a group of cultists (like the human killer guy who's sacrificing people in the movie) smuggling an egg up into the steeple of the skyscraper at the beginning of the film. But, to cut corners, he omited that scene, figuring that viewers could just speculate and "come up with their own explanations about how that f@#&!n bird got up there".
