The people you leave behind to 'hold the line' are assigned a defense value and if the defense value is too low, people start dying depending on the total defense score. It starts with the weakest members. Tali has the lowest defense score, then Mordin, etc...
How does it change if you romanced liara in me1, romance someone who dies in me2, and romance liara again in me3, does it change how she asked you about the status of your relationship

On my first playthrough I romanced her and she died as the tech specialist because I took Zaeed as a group diversion chief. Still has PTSD over this decision

He used save editor. In a sense he didnt kill him. Just think that Garrus taking a break from the scene to save you from heartbreak 😅 he can comeback with a click of a mouse

To romance garrus is to get him loyal. He can lead the teams, it’s impossible for him to be the biotic, and with a survival score of 4, it’s IMPOSSIBLE for him to die holding the line. The ONLY way to kill loyal garrus is to send him into the vents. You’d have to be either REALLY dumb or want to kill him on purpose

I feel you. Girl is so innocent, literally an angel (until she gets drunk, haha). Even If I haven't romanced her - she'd still be like a daughter or a little sis to me. I mean someone very close and important. Well, I actually wasn't really into Tali much during the first ME game, but even during this period of time I found her so cute, just being so kind, enthusiastic and learning how Normandy works with crew. I already knew she'll ALWAYS be welcomed on my board. Awesome, alive character
@Kissalude yup. But honestly, such a "twist" eventually felt good. I didn't expect I'll be so into Tali. Later in 2 & 3 they paid so much effort into her development as a char, so I started looking at her from the different angle. You know, just like IRL. Some people are super-decent but you don't even expect it. And when you accidentally start having more communication with them, you realise how awesome some people are... Played as male all the time. It was a hard choice between Tali and Liara, though.
Imagine ever letting Garrus or Tali die. The only ride or die squadmates in the entire series that willingly follow Shepard three whole times into near guaranteed death and then come back for more.
They're also some of the most colorful characters in the whole cast, I guess it just takes a certain kind of mindset to willingly walk into hell 3 times in a row.

The Virmire Casualty is the default in this conversation and doesn't need to have been a love interest (the ME1 romance isn't locked in yet at that point, so they can't technically be a love interest). You can hear all (or at least most) dead squad mates' voices in the dream sequences, although maybe the others only show up in the later ones, I don't know.
In the last dream it’s pretty much every dead squad mate that didn’t make it. I heard Mordin, Thane, Ashley and Legion. Had to replay that dream sequence though. Always made me sad to hear them like this.
The irony of Shepard saying Jacob "had a good head" really hits you when you realise that the most likely way he gets killed is volunteering for a job he is underqualified for and he dies from a shot to the head. Both a bad call and getting domed. The reason it's the most likely way he dies is because many first time players likely chose him because he volunteered. It's kinda funny how the 2 squaddies who should best understand what they're up against (Miranda and Jacob, both being Cerberus operatives) are the ones who volunteer for a job that they can't do. Of course, Miranda goes 50/50 on that, actually being qualified to lead, but being too weak of a biotic for the seeker swarm bubble.
I find saying that Jacob "had a good head" ironic because if you romance him in ME2, he does FemShep dirty in ME3, and not in a good way. While FemShep sits in jail, Jacob goes on vacation to a beach before reconnecting with an old aquaintance, falls in love with her, gets her pregnant and never mentions anything to Shepard about it till the rescue mission to save the ex-cerberus scientists. You then have to witness his scientist gf being cold asf towards Shepard during the rescue... The whole thing is so wrong that Shepard actually gets the option to punch Jacob as a greeting in the Citadel DLC.

Something to note: If your love interest didn't die during the suicide mission, the game will default to whichever person died on Virmire died during this dialogue option instead.
Yeah, I never realized this option was supposed to be for love interests. I've never romanced Kaidan or Ashley so when I got that option I figured it was meant for the Virmire deaths but I guess not
On my first playthrough I was kinda pissed it didn't let me choose Mordin. That's what I was upset about (and am STILL upset about)... but then the game only gave me Ashley or nothing.

I always loved to imagine that at the Citadel Party everyone would start drinking and while still in a cheerful attitude, at one point someone brings up how not everyone made it here, and how they wish they did. To which a specific character would raise a drink to the memory of those you've lost. Tali to Legion, Wrex or Grunt to Mordin, etc.

@@communistwookiee4727 Yeah, Mark Meer's performance is really impactful. Sure, his performance in ME1 was monotonous but the way I see it is the development of a soldier into a hero. In ME1, he was merely a N7 soldier, one who just did his job, hence his voice being generic and monotonous. In ME2, he died and when he came back, he realized the loss of his crew alongside whom he fought Saren, created a new crew that are willing to die for him. That's where his development as a hero begins and by ME3, he has become the symbol of hope, resistance to those far advanced than any species in Milky Way Galaxy, yet they are fighting because of the achievement Shepard garnered. The galaxy looks up to him, wants to follow him and have faith in him that he will lead them to victory. Mark Meer did a great job in giving us that feel, Hale failed in it but FemShep fans will never agree to this.

She was already a known quantity, with(at least supporting roles in) games like Planescape Torment, Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate, and Knights of the Old Republic. If we're talking purely about the technicalities, she was better in the earlier games.

i only heard the line with garrus for the first time a few days ago after a video showed up in my recommended and it literally broke me since he has now become my favourite love interest for shepard. considering he's been with shepard since the very beginning of the trilogy you can tell just how much his death affects her. i romanced him in my second playthrough and i chose him again my current third playthrough and i don't have it in me to get him killed. jennifer did such a great job putting so much emotion into her voice for moments like this
Thing is, Tali can't die in Mass Effect 2. The moment she does, you either reload an earlier save or start an entirely new run. You can't start Mass Effect 3 without Tali.
I romanced Garrus during my fem Shepherd play through. He was a sweet guy, charming, just the best. I was hoping Shepherd would say "I'm gonna miss his calibration..." 😆😆😆
If you romance Liara in ME1 and Garrus in ME2 and then try and get back with Liara, she will say in the Shadow Broker mission ‘Garrus is calibrating more than just the Normandy’s guns.’ F**king savage lol

Watching these scenes made me think how much Liara cares about Shepard, she is also the only squadmate that can' t die in all three games (except for the final mission)
@WillFanofMany Lol, yeah. I think it's the reason why they didn't reveal Tali's face on Rannoch. A scene like that would have made Tali stand out too much in comparison to Liara.
He litterally just is your 2nd. He's the only option in the suicide mission for 2nd squad that actually does anything besides 2 side missions in me3. He's just the realest and if you let him die your evil.
It's crazy since he has so little of a role in the actual story compared to, say, Tali, Wrex, Thane, Mordin, or Legion, but the void he leaves can be felt just as much as any of them.
@@CABRALFAN27Of course both Garrus and Tali is necessary to be alive in 2-3 parts. They are there in the beginning and stick with Shepard till the end. It’s true that Garrus didn’t exactly received a significant presence in story but he’s more than makes up for it in pretty much everywhere he is by his comments and jokes. And a Machine gun.
I don’t think Jacob is that bad of a character but I think he could of been much better aesthetically and story wise. Also compared to the other bros in Mass Effect he doesn’t stack up
He's just...boring. There's nothing really special about him. Everything he's good at, there's already a character that has that quality. Plus... him being the only guy who cheats on you with having a runaway dad... felt to be in VERY poor taste.
The biggest thing with Jacob for me is that playing as fem shep almost every interaction sounds like extreme flirting no matter what option you choose. I wasn't trying to romance him so I ended up just not talking to him for most if the game.
That Miranda dialogue kinda hit me. "I'm trying to remember if I ever told her that [she was something special]." Damn. Always tell the people you love exactly how you feel about them. And do it often. You never want to look back and wonder if they died never knowing how you really felt about them.

I think if you don't let your love interest die, Shepard (male or female) will default to saying they miss whoever you let die on Virmire (either Ashley or Kaiden).

ashley came up for me because of virmire and I didn’t let anyone die in ME2 and I didn’t even give her any recognition because she shoots wrex without your permission if your not careful. And nobody does that to my pal. also Tali is the best love interest hands down hope we get to see that house on rannoch one day
I like to imagine that if you romance liaria in the first game but romance Tali/garrus in the second game and get back with liara In ME3 she is like listening to shepherd vent about their dead one-night stand they cheated with and how much they miss them which is fuck up but it makes me laugh a little 😂

This is the only trilogy that make use of their big game size. Those gigs are worth it. Unlike other games that are using hundreds of gigabytes just for the texture.
I think the vermire sacrifice dialogue doesn't change even if you romance them, I got that kaidan one despite never interacting or romancing him before. Also, you would have to be a monster to let Garrus and Tali die and continue without them.
It's actually quite easy to get tali killed (involontarly) especially if you don't have the DLC charcters, as she's the 2nd squadmate most likely to die when your remaining squadmates stay behind whild you go destroy the human reaper (and she isn't useful as a squadmate in that section of the mission) However for garrus, you pretty much need to do it on purpose
@@n1ghtwalk3r54 Yea, I had Tali die on me in ME3 because I didn't do her loyalty mission right in ME2 and had no idea I did it wrong until I saw her 0ff herself on screen. I had to go back to ME2 and restart ME3 later. I can't remember if it was because I didn't know I could edit the save with a mod at the time or because I wanted to replay both games. As for Garrus, for the longest time I had no idea it was possible for him to die, you'd have to do that voluntarily. Why would someone do that? That's beyond me.
@@undyne1 Actually if tali commits suicide, it doesn't matter if you do her loyalty mission (unless you're planning to make peace), as if you choose the geth, she always does that
@@n1ghtwalk3r54 Tali can live if you make peace with both the geth and quarians but you have to go through 3-4 check points (at least that's what I had to do to prevent her death). Not getting her exiled without using the evidence, saving the admiral, and destroying the geth server. All while having enough paragon/renegade points. Legion is one of the few characters that dies regardless of what you do in ME3.
I never knew this was an option. I always thought that moment was exclusive to the one who died on virmire. No matter how many walkthroughs I've made and will make, I could never do this though. It's too painful, especially Garrus and Tali
Fun fact, if your Love Interest did not die, you can sometimes get the Dialogue for the virmire victim, doesn’t happen every playthrough, but it’ll happen sometimes.

She does. After playing with her, Broshep sounds pretty bland to me. Not saying Meer’s work is bad, just that Hale was much better when you compare them side by side.
@@noumanintown ya like his speech sounds... Stiff? I think that's a good way to describe it. Like, that softening in Femshep's voice in those scenes, conveys how tired she is, how much the war is weighing on her. I don't get that same feeling from Broshep's voice.
At least for ME2 and if you're on a PC, you can get the early recruitment mod. I just replayed it the other day and got Tali before I recruited anyone else besides Kasumi and Zaeed and it was amazing listening to all the dialogue she has for all the early recruitment missions and Horizon especially.
Interesting. Despite all its flaws, its still lovely to find out something new about the games. Sidenote: if you play MELE on PC, I highly recommend the "Dreams Remade" mod (among many others haha). If you ask me, the mod authors do a terrific job of creating dream sequences that feel genuine, and avoid the stupid-ass starchild stuff. I won't spoil them, but if you're one of those reasonable players who thinks the vanilla ending of ME3 is bullcrap, "Dreams Remade" does a better job of depicting the true cost of the war against the Reapers, and responds to your choices and who lives/dies in your campaign. It's a must-have mod. Also...thank you for meming on Jacob when he came up. LMAO Seriously, BioWare should be ashamed for how they wrote that character. "He had a good head..." is just wrong, considering every single piece of advice he gives is WRONG in ME2. "He had a good heart..." The man literally cheats on FemShep in ME3 and both he and Brynn have the audacity to act like it's Shepard's fault somehow by acting like complete children. Seriously, I almost never play FemShep, so I had no idea. I just through Jacob was boring in ME3, AGAIN. But no, Jacob is a rotten bastard in ME3. So this line here from FemShep just rings hollow. XD

While FemShep sits in jail, Jacob goes on vacation to a beach before reconnecting with an old aquaintance, falls in love with her, gets her pregnant and never mentions anything to Shepard about it till the rescue mission to save the ex-cerberus scientists. You then have to witness his scientist gf being cold asf towards Shepard during the rescue... The whole thing is so wrong that Shepard actually gets the option to punch Jacob as a greeting in the Citadel DLC.
What do you mean he was the perfect squad mate to lead team 2.... if you do his loyalty mission anyway
@@mal1362 I was refering to him volunteering for the vent mission, which will get him killed. He can be selected as a team leader, but he doesn't suggest that.

Something to note: If your love interest didn't die during the suicide mission, the game will default to whichever person died on Virmire died during this dialogue option instead.
Yeah, I never realized this option was supposed to be for love interests. I've never romanced Kaidan or Ashley so when I got that option I figured it was meant for the Virmire deaths but I guess not

I cared for Kaiden so little I chose the "let the dead rest" option in paragon playthrough.
On my first playthrough I was kinda pissed it didn't let me choose Mordin. That's what I was upset about (and am STILL upset about)... but then the game only gave me Ashley or nothing.

It's the default option. If no romanced Squad Mate from ME2 died, Shepard will think about the Virmire casualty instead.

I always loved to imagine that at the Citadel Party everyone would start drinking and while still in a cheerful attitude, at one point someone brings up how not everyone made it here, and how they wish they did. To which a specific character would raise a drink to the memory of those you've lost. Tali to Legion, Wrex or Grunt to Mordin, etc.

@@communistwookiee4727 Yeah, Mark Meer's performance is really impactful. Sure, his performance in ME1 was monotonous but the way I see it is the development of a soldier into a hero. In ME1, he was merely a N7 soldier, one who just did his job, hence his voice being generic and monotonous. In ME2, he died and when he came back, he realized the loss of his crew alongside whom he fought Saren, created a new crew that are willing to die for him. That's where his development as a hero begins and by ME3, he has become the symbol of hope, resistance to those far advanced than any species in Milky Way Galaxy, yet they are fighting because of the achievement Shepard garnered. The galaxy looks up to him, wants to follow him and have faith in him that he will lead them to victory. Mark Meer did a great job in giving us that feel, Hale failed in it but FemShep fans will never agree to this.
Don't forget his narration of the control ending.

@@dr_feelgood1902 I prefer Mark's acting but that just ain't it, chief. Jennifer Hale was an experienced actress by the time Mass Effect came around, and it shows. She was already a known quantity, with(at least supporting roles in) games like Planescape Torment, Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate, and Knights of the Old Republic. If we're talking purely about the technicalities, she was better in the earlier games.
The one about Garrus cuts deep. I think it fits perfectly regardless of if you romance him as female Shep or bromance him as male Shep.

i only heard the line with garrus for the first time a few days ago after a video showed up in my recommended and it literally broke me since he has now become my favourite love interest for shepard. considering he's been with shepard since the very beginning of the trilogy you can tell just how much his death affects her. i romanced him in my second playthrough and i chose him again my current third playthrough and i don't have it in me to get him killed. jennifer did such a great job putting so much emotion into her voice for moments like this

It is unfathomable to me that ME3 can be played without Garrus. He has such a strong presence during the game, he's basically your second-in-command.
He litterally just is your 2nd. He's the only option in the suicide mission for 2nd squad that actually does anything besides 2 side missions in me3. He's just the realest and if you let him die your evil.
It's crazy since he has so little of a role in the actual story compared to, say, Tali, Wrex, Thane, Mordin, or Legion, but the void he leaves can be felt just as much as any of them.
@@CABRALFAN27Of course both Garrus and Tali is necessary to be alive in 2-3 parts. They are there in the beginning and stick with Shepard till the end. It’s true that Garrus didn’t exactly received a significant presence in story but he’s more than makes up for it in pretty much everywhere he is by his comments and jokes. And a Machine gun.

I don’t think Jacob is that bad of a character but I think he could of been much better aesthetically and story wise.

He's just...boring. There's nothing really special about him. Everything he's good at, there's already a character that has that quality.
Plus... him being the only guy who cheats on you with having a runaway dad... felt to be in VERY poor taste.
The biggest thing with Jacob for me is that playing as fem shep almost every interaction sounds like extreme flirting no matter what option you choose. I wasn't trying to romance him so I ended up just not talking to him for most if the game.
As someone who's always appreciated a good straight man character I actually always liked Jacob. Much prefer Kaidan in that role tho

I think if you don't let your love interest die, Shepard (male or female) will default to saying they miss whoever you let die on Virmire (either Ashley or Kaiden).

This is the only trilogy that make use of their big game size. Those gigs are worth it. Unlike other games that are using hundreds of gigabytes just for the texture.
I think the vermire sacrifice dialogue doesn't change even if you romance them, I got that kaidan one despite never interacting or romancing him before.
Also, you would have to be a monster to let Garrus and Tali die and continue without them.
It's actually quite easy to get tali killed (involontarly) especially if you don't have the DLC charcters, as she's the 2nd squadmate most likely to die when your remaining squadmates stay behind whild you go destroy the human reaper (and she isn't useful as a squadmate in that section of the mission)
However for garrus, you pretty much need to do it on purpose
@@n1ghtwalk3r54 Yea, I had Tali die on me in ME3 because I didn't do her loyalty mission right in ME2 and had no idea I did it wrong until I saw her 0ff herself on screen. I had to go back to ME2 and restart ME3 later. I can't remember if it was because I didn't know I could edit the save with a mod at the time or because I wanted to replay both games.
As for Garrus, for the longest time I had no idea it was possible for him to die, you'd have to do that voluntarily. Why would someone do that? That's beyond me.
@@undyne1 Actually if tali commits suicide, it doesn't matter if you do her loyalty mission (unless you're planning to make peace), as if you choose the geth, she always does that
@@n1ghtwalk3r54 Tali can live if you make peace with both the geth and quarians but you have to go through 3-4 check points (at least that's what I had to do to prevent her death). Not getting her exiled without using the evidence, saving the admiral, and destroying the geth server. All while having enough paragon/renegade points.
Legion is one of the few characters that dies regardless of what you do in ME3.
I think that's because in ME1, the romance confirmation is after they die, so ME3 wouldn't know whether you romanced them or not.
Jennifer Hale really shines in scenes like this. She's such an amazing actress.

She does. After playing with her, Broshep sounds pretty bland to me. Not saying Meer’s work is bad, just that Hale was much better when you compare them side by side.

At least for ME2 and if you're on a PC, you can get the early recruitment mod. I just replayed it the other day and got Tali before I recruited anyone else besides Kasumi and Zaeed and it was amazing listening to all the dialogue she has for all the early recruitment missions and Horizon especially.

Interesting. Despite all its flaws, its still lovely to find out something new about the games.
Sidenote: if you play MELE on PC, I highly recommend the "Dreams Remade" mod (among many others haha). If you ask me, the mod authors do a terrific job of creating dream sequences that feel genuine, and avoid the stupid-ass starchild stuff. I won't spoil them, but if you're one of those reasonable players who thinks the vanilla ending of ME3 is bullcrap, "Dreams Remade" does a better job of depicting the true cost of the war against the Reapers, and responds to your choices and who lives/dies in your campaign. It's a must-have mod.
Also...thank you for meming on Jacob when he came up. LMAO Seriously, BioWare should be ashamed for how they wrote that character. "He had a good head..." is just wrong, considering every single piece of advice he gives is WRONG in ME2. "He had a good heart..." The man literally cheats on FemShep in ME3 and both he and Brynn have the audacity to act like it's Shepard's fault somehow by acting like complete children.
